So today me and my dad went bass fishing in the upper part of the cape fear river.

About half way through the day a group of three little john boats come by. In the boat in the front, one guy is cranking a handle with red wires dangling in the water. The other two boats were following behind him with nets. They went all day up and down the banks 'shocking' fish out of the water and scooping them up with nets.

I thought this was pretty illegal in NC? Completely gave me a sour taste about fishing there if thats the way people "catch" fish.

Uhh, is there a chance that they were supposed to be doing that for like a study or posterity?

the NC Wildlife Commision does that for research, but I'm sensing they didn't look like officials.

There's a difference in "redneck culture" and the hicks and criminals that poach, litter, and disregard our precious natural resources. An amazing thing happened today... I (my boat) saw this fat kid throw an empty chip bag into the river... I wasn't in a position to catch it but a kayaker did, a woman in the front of my boat from FL screamed at the kid and he ran away. I always try to keep wherever I am cleaner than it was when I got there."

Talked to a local ranger today

He said electroshock fishing is legal on certain parts of the cape fear river. He also added that he couldn't express his opinion on it but I got the idea on how he felt about it.

Who gives a shit. It's obviously a more effective way to fish. There's nothing honorable about waiting around all day if you're hungry.

It's not often that I get to go trolling in an actual fishing thread.

Thats exactly what you're dealing with in the lines of state employed technicians. I worked with some hardcore good ol boys when I was working with the NC Division of Marine Fisheries.

Electroshock fishing rarely contributes to mortality.

I'm guessing its state employees from FWC.
