No I'm saying a "17" screen" isn't nescessarily a plus because it's large and heavy... is that so hard to understand? That's why talking about the 17" models, to me at least, seems kind of pointless since most people don't want those behemoths anyways. The majority of laptop sales are still in laptops of what I would consider reasonable size (15/15.4 inch or less.)

"You are a dumbass. Through and through a fucking dumbass. You buy an Apple to get everything. If you want some barebones stripped shit, get a Dell.

To answer your stupid points. 1) MANY people buy and use webcams. Maybe there's a reason why every damn chat app has video chat now. Just because YOU don't use something doesn't make it stupid.
2) You apparently have no fucking clue what iLife is. It's an incredible set of value added applications.
3) You just compared OSX to kubuntu and found the latter better? You just lost any credibility you ever had, which wasn't much. OSX is a vastly superior CONSUMER DESKTOP OS.
4) The Comparable 15" Dell Inspiron does not have tv out. Which is what I am comparing to here. Way to pay attention
5) You obviously aren't the target market for a Macbook. Way to state the obvious and waste more of everyone's time. Jesus christ."

you must have always been in remedial english...if you'd actually READ the direction of my posts, you'd notice that a.) i wasn't even responding to you in 90% of my posts and b.) i have used this entire thread to push toshiba as an alternative, not dell

did you understand that paragraph? are you paying attention? if so, continue...if not, sit down, shut up, and read it again until you have a clue

to answer your stupid counterpoints:

1.) i didn't say it was stupid...i said I DON'T USE IT and therefore it's not something i want to be forced to pay for...reading comprehension, man

2.) i know exactly what ilife is...i can use the intarweb just as good as (though i'm beginning to think better than) you...BUT I DON'T NEED IT AND I SEE NO REASON TO PAY FOR IT

3.) yes, i most definitely compared kubuntu to OSX, and i said that i like kubuntu better...as an alternative to windows, i would MUCH rather use kubuntu than OSX...did i say that kubuntu was a better "consumer desktop os"? of course i didn't, you illiterate twit, i said I LIKE IT BETTER

4.) nothing will ever be "loaded" unless it's a mac (based on your description of what "loaded" is...unless they start offering ilife on non-apple machines right out of the box)...dell laptops are indeed barebones systems, which is why i don't see them as an option if one is considering a t60 or a macbook pro (you know, the topic of this thread? you do realize there was a point to this, right?)...all new toshibas in the satellite line come with an s-video out

5.) of course i'm not the target market for the macbook...i specifically implied that i wasn't...however, as the creator of the thread was looking into a t60, which (based on your points) isn't even comparable to a macbook pro because it doesn't have all the "features" you so desperately cling to, i'm asserting that a toshiba is a very GOOD alternative to the t60

seriously, do you even bother to read threads anymore? or do you just close your eyes, pick a post, and then decide to argue for the hell of it? talk about credibility...gg, son

KDE has grown a lot, and I saw someone using it once on their laptop. It looked a lot better than MacOSX, although I am sure the person had spent considerable time making it look so rich in eye candy.

first of all, it's a 17" display...as mentioned a dozen times before, very few people would consider that equivalent to a 15.4" and smaller...not because it's superior, but because it's a freakin' desktop that you take with you on occasion...i don't there are a lot of people on here who would consider the huge screen an advantage (i consider it a liability because it significantly lowers your battery life and significantly increases your weight)

THERE'S NO FUCKING WAY YOU'RE GONNA TELL ME A TOSHIBA IS CHEAPER THAN A DELL

actually, i AM going to tell you that a.) with toshiba you can get a better machine for the same or less amount of money and b.) i've delt with ALMOST nothing but toshibas over the past year and they are far from "poor quality" (though i have admitted that in the past, i would have ranked them as low in physical quality)

i have had specific bad luck with hp/compaq (a plethora of issues)...our only thinkpad (which is, granted, over a year old) is having trouble with the screen blacking out when you move it

configured e1405 = $1460 after shipping
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=E1405RFC1&s=dhs

configured e1505 = $1470 after shipping
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=E1505RFC1&s=dhs

i don't know what the student discount is, but both of these are heavier than the toshiba i listed, the t60, or the macbook pro

Toshiba's are good machines.

They are not configurable, which is the major drawback. You get what you buy, and that's that. I'm typing from one right now, and it's been a great laptop for the past 4 years.

Quagmire: You missed the point again. Who gives a flying shit what YOU "need" or "want".

As for this bit of idiocy

Windows is a consumer desktop os
OSX is a consumer desktop os.

Kubuntu is not better than either of the above, as a consumer desktop os. KDE and the entire X underpinnings for it BLOW. I can't believe we are in 2006 and no one has come up with a better graphic underpinning for *nix gui's yet.

It's possible you don't need a desktop OS, which is why you think it's "better". Once again, your personal preference is completely offtopic and useless to the thread.

No. Way to miss the boat again. You can load up a Dell with productivity software too (which you can't do on the Toshiba, yet another downside). And yes I realize Toshiba's have s-video out, as I ALREADY FUCKING SAID, I WAS TALKING ABOUT THE DELL INSPIRONS.

So why the fuck are you bringing up your personal preferences?

And a Macbook Pro is comparable. It's in the same price range AND has all the extra's that neither of the other two can get.

I did indeed speak of the apocalypse - I used a technique known as hyperbole.

hyperbole (n) - A figure of speech in which exaggeration is used for emphasis or effect

While the new MacBook Pro seems appealing, I've found it best to avoid buying a first generation product. Apple is still working the bugs out (monitor hinge problems, battery and heat dissipation issues, etc.). The Thinkpad series is very mature in contrast and still retains the highest build quality of any laptop manufacturer. I've used my Thinkpad T40p (purchased via the NCSU Bookstore) for the past three years and have been quite pleased.

I owned a 17" PowerBook G4, and after awhile it got very hot. I have a Dell i9300 17" now and it gets quite hot after extended usage. I've yet to find a laptop w/ the specs I want that didn't end up "hot" after 30-1hr. of usage...I just accept it and get on with it.

And I agree w/ not buying 1st gen...I may get a MacBook Pro within a year, but it'll be at least the 2nd revision. Primary reason for me is cashflow.

Yeah, the macbook overheating is a design flaw on apple's part, and not a natural consequence of the performance related parts.

as said before, get a multi-button mouse. I use a logitech MX610, which has like 10 buttons.

and for those times when you're on the go and just have the touchpad to deal with, you'll get used to CTRL+clicking pretty quickly.

Actually, from what I understand, it may have been an intentional flaw on Apple's part. Apparently, the thermal grease or something wasn't applied properly which caused a problem with heat transfer through the heat pipes. Since the fan sensor was on the heat pipes, it wasn't running at the speed it should have been running at. Consequently, this improved battery life. The people who have gone and fixed the way the heat sink was attached have said that battery life got a good bit worse, but, they weren't burning their legs anymore.

I think the new MacBooks have two-finger right-clicking. Just like you put 2 fingers on the trackpad to scroll, if you click with 2 fingers on it, it right-clicks.

all im trying to do is delete a song on itunes, normally you can just right click and hit "delete" but nothing will do that. i've tried every button on the keyboard. what a terrible design. im also pissed that there's no "delete" button either. the "delete" button on this computer just does what the "backspace" button does on a regular computer.

It's a notebook keypad, not an extended keyboard. These issues that you seem to be having such a problem with should have been immediately obvious prior to purchasing. Either adapt, or quit your bitching.

You realize that you can control-click right?

Also, I think the 2-finger thing I was talking about might have been from a third party app (also try the trackpad preferences).

Also, in iTunes, option-delete will delete a song from itunes and the respective file, fn-delete or shift-delete usually mimics the "del" key you're use to.
