"Store Owners Hope Hillsborough Street Revitalization Has Begun

RALEIGH, N.C. -- It was a groundbreaking for the new Central YMCA in Raleigh on Tuesday. But there is perhaps greater meaning under the surface. Some see the project as the long awaited first step in revitalizing Hillsborough Street.

More than 20,000 cars a day travel the thoroughfare, and more than 30,000 students go to NC State. But staring out on all that energy are pockets of empty buildings.

Val Valentine owns property on Hillsborough, including University Towers. He says the street needs an infusion of money, like the funds spent on Glenwood South.

“We're like a red-headed stepchild,” said Valentine.

But this week, the city did approve $5 million for street improvements on Hillsborough. That includes building three roundabouts.

“Slowing down the traffic is a good idea, I think,” said student bookstore owner Rodger Berg. “You know, a 25 mph speed limit sign might have worked as well.”

Berg said he’s worked at four major universities

“I have to say it's the most boring of any of the ones I have worked at,” he said.

Hillsborough Street is more than 200 years old, built as a thoroughfare from the Capitol. And some dream of seeing it as a signature area of the city. But for now, critics say there is no signature, just paper.

Those closely following Hillsborough Street improvements say about 10 new businesses have opened on the street in the past year and a half. But by the same token, about six or eight businesses have also closed on Hillsborough during that same time frame."

Interesting stuff....

http://www.hillsboroughstreet.org

According to City leaders, a roundabout at Morgan/Hillsborough should be done at the beginning of 2007, and they are in the design stage of another roundabout on Hillsborough. Evidently, that is what the $5 million is for...

With that kind of success rate and local support who wouldn't start a business up on Hillsborough?

Traffic on Hillsboro St. is not bad enough to prevent people from going there. GG on anything that makes traffic better, but this won't do shit for business.

In other words...
I am a wealthy landowner. I'd like for the city to throw an assload of money into the area surrounding my property so that I can become even more wealthy at no cost to me. It would be too much to ask for landowners such as myself to do anything to help the area in which we have a stake.

The main reason I avoid Hillsboro St. is the parking. I go a lot more often during the summer when school is out. Fix parking, get the people who have a stake in Hillsboro St. to put forth some effort/money, and the rest will follow.

Skack for City Council.

No way in hell will the Homeowners Association behind Hillsborough get behind this. It'll bring people onto Hillsborough, and those people bring cars, drinking, and piss to be dealt with.

Now, if you bought your place around, oh, 1882, I feel for you. Really, I do. All those other fucks can piss off. Those folks would rather have a dead Hillsborough st with winos and crackheads than Glenwood II.

I have seen visualizations from Kimley and Horn about Hillsborough St area. It is a nice layout, but I disagree with some of what they want to do. Hillsborough St is planned to be a 2 lane road again to be more pedestrian friendly. And they have considered the homeowners, business owners, City of Raleigh, and NCSU in this design and a lot are wanting this to happen.

Are there any plans to build some pedestrian bridges? Seems like if they drop Hillsborough down to two lanes then there will be constant traffic that will make it harder to cross the street. If they keep the stoplight for each crosswalk system it would further add to the bottleneck.

I avoided driving on Hillsborough (opting for Wade) even before mention of all this mess.

the difference is, glenwood south has lots of bars and draws its own crowd. no one who owns property on or near hillsborough will allow new bars to be built, and are trying to get the current ones removed. that limits profitability greatly.

not to mention that glenwood is like 4 lanes wide in each direction

here is what i want to be done

1. fix the road so its not so shitty
2. make the sidewalks better and plant some fucking trees
3. get rid of the ghetto ass bums

we're not talking about near the mall. glenwood south is two lanes each direction (plus parking on either side). it's pretty much the same size as hillsborough.

They really need to tear hillsborough street down and rebuild it with the same design philosophy as North Hills II: slow roads for cards to cruise to a parking deck, everything else designed around walking.

Not only would that make the place worth a damn, but it might also attract more interesting people to NC State university. Now that they've kicked us nerds to Centennial Campus, main campus has become way too pink and faggoty.

that is the whole point of the project. To make the area less friendly to traffic and more friendly to pedestrians. To make it so that people only use it if they want to go to something there instead of using it as a main street to get to downtown. They want people to use Wade or Western instead.
