Unlike XFL, Arena Football, etc, this looks like a fantastic idea. Teams will be placed in college football towns and use regional talent after they have exhausted their college eligibility. This will give graduating seniors a chance to make it pro. Players will be played a min. of $100,000.

They have a poll where NCSU garnered 20% of the vote of where do you want an AAFL team to be placed.

Poll skew some more and what do you think of this idea?

edit: hah, we did get 20% but the numbers on those schools don't add up to 100%... it's well over 100%

It could work since unlike arena, it is on an actual football field.

And it being in the Spring / Summer is good since that is a slow time of year in sports for most people. And a lot of people would like football during the summer. Although if the season goes on too long, then they will have to compete with NFL preseason games.

I love the idea. I think it's fantastic and could actually work. I'd like to see cotra at carter-finley again.

I can't watch Arena, CFL, XFL, etc. b/c the rules are so stupid. I have watched NFL Europe and think a league here similar to that (maybe use minor league baseball and hockey as the model) would work.

With 32 NFL teams with 55 man rosters, it would be cool if they formed an 8 team league where 4 teams share each as a minor league of some sort. That would give each team 13 or so players that they could "call up" if needed instead of calling Vinnie Testeverde every year to get him off his couch.

Another story about it...

Quote :
"Spring league on tap
The All American Football League is talking with NCSU officials about using Carter-Finley Stadium

Chip Alexander, Staff Writer
A new professional spring football league stocked with college graduates may have a team playing at N.C. State's Carter-Finley Stadium.
Athletics director Lee Fowler said Wednesday that NCSU has held discussions with officials of the fledgling All American Football League about the use of the Wolfpack stadium. Should the stadium be leased, Fowler said it could bring in a "ballpark figure" of $2 million to $3 million a year for the school.

"We have told them we're willing to allow it," Fowler said. "They will not use our practice facilities or any other facility, only the stadium for the six or seven games to be played each year. We're looking at it strongly and told them we would be on board."

Former NCAA president Cedric Dempsey announced Wednesday at a news conference in New York that the league would have eight teams and would begin play next April. Players will be required to have exhausted their college athletic eligibility and hold a four-year college degree to participate.

"We feel this will encourage more athletes, and not just those at N.C. State, to graduate while also giving them the opportunity to play professionally and perhaps reach the NFL," Fowler said.

The players would earn about $100,000 a season, Dempsey said. The salaries of the players and coaches will be paid by the league.

Dempsey said lease arrangements for the stadiums were being negotiated with schools in the ACC, Big Ten and Southeastern conferences but did not identify the schools. He said the league was seeking investors to pay the franchise fees of $2 million to $3 million. The league expects the franchises to be owned by alumni and supporters of the universities hosting the teams.

"Research conducted by the league has found a high interest among college football fans for more football featuring the college atmosphere and tradition," Dempsey said at the news conference, noting that tickets would be priced at about $30.

One AAFL team could play its games at the University of Florida, reported Florida Today, the newspaper in Melbourne, Fla. Another team could use Purdue's Ross-Ade Stadium, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Larry Gallo, associate athletics director at North Carolina, said UNC had not been contacted by league officials.

Dempsey will serve as board chairman of the AAFL. Other board members include: Gene Corrigan, a former ACC commissioner and NCAA president; former Southeastern Conference commissioner Harvey Schiller; former Tennessee football coach Doug Dickey; and Charles Young, former chancellor at UCLA.

"We've been involved with this thing for a couple of years now," Corrigan said Wednesday. "What you have to like about the concept is that it's another carrot for schools to help more of their athletes graduate. It also should provide jobs -- for players, coaches, for many people.

"A lot of young people love to play football and this will be a nice way to make a living. It will be a nice source of income for the schools. I think people in Raleigh would want to see a team with a number of players from State, Carolina, Duke, East Carolina. There are a lot of pluses and few negatives."

The AAFL would be the second spring football league to play games in Carter-Finley Stadium, and the first didn't fare well.

In 1991, the Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks of the World League of American Football played its home games in the stadium. The Skyhawks finished 0-10 in their only season with a home attendance of about 12,000 per game.

Ha ha I love the UNC "not contacted" bit. They can't even sell out their own games so how the fuck would they ever support a pro team.

I like the idea, but $30 tickets for any minor league sport is rediculous. I'd rather go to an away State game or see the canes for that much.

the idea sounds good as far as players having to have 4 year degrees and having a decent sport in the summer

but who knows...it says the league expects the teams to be owned by alumni of the local schools?

^something about NCAA rules infractions come to my mind after hearing this.

But if we can OWN a minor league professional sports team in Carter-Finley, think of the money and expecially the fanbase that could transcend to NCSU football when the season is about to start.

wont this also make the competition quite a bit lower too?

a good bit of marquee programs have extremely low graduation rates. (ie. auburn) requiring a degree seems like it would drop the level

I already don't have enough time to watch all the college and NFL games that I want. So for me, this wouldn't mean much at all.

But this would be spring and summer football so it wouldn't interfere with NFL or college ball.

I can't wait to see TA out there . . . oh wait

I don't see how they could pay each player 100,000. That would require some major ticket sales and its gonna be tough getting people at 30 a game. Hell its only like 10 or so for that Arena crap they play at Dorton.

I don't expect to see the league profit for the first 5 years, but that's like any business.

hey, the WLAF is back...

1. It's going to be hot as hell. This hurt the USFL.
2. I wouldn't pay $30 for college fb tickets. It's minor league sports, they'll be lucky to draw a few thousand on that much money.
3. It's spring football. Hello USFL, WFL, WLAF, XFL.

the big one there is NCAA bball . . . and these games won't start until April

^the comment about TA was because he didn't graduate . . . so thus can't play
