I am visiting Raleigh and Philly at the end of this month (from Sep.27 to Oct.5). I am staying at my friend's place in Raleigh, but I gotta stay at a hotel in Philly. Do you know any decent/cheap (~$100 per night) hotel in convenient/safe area of Philly? Some recommendation plz!

that's typically real cheap

You could have named this thread "Philadelphia Locals," but then everyone would have thought it was a dating personal.

you'll be able to find something cheap around the airport. Its safe around there...but you'd have to commute into the city if you wanted to do stuff there.

sure the immediate area around the airport will be safe, but youll find thats a pretty crappy area.. rather industrial...

also thats the worst commute in philadelphia during rush hour, youll be stuck on 95 lockedup till you hit the bridges.

the airport is also quite a bit south of the city.

as for hotels, i dont really know. i always stayed with friends in manayunk when i would visit, but now living in north delaware, i just go home.

hmmm...from my experiences, the hotels around the airport are pretty well isolated from any bad area (95 does a pretty good job of isolation).

i agree about the traffic and the commute (its about a $20 cab ride to the city), but if shes looking for something safe/cheap, the airport is going to be one of the best bets. stuff in city center is going to cost some $$$

yeah you get into the city, your chance of finding decent accomodations for <$100/night will be pretty close to nil.

itd be closer to stay in camden at like a holiday inn across the whitman, but camden is one of the worst places in america, for my money.

oO i hd forgotten about this, if you do stay near the airports, you can hop the airport train to 30th street station for $6.

cheaper than cab fare and on certian times of the day faster.

30th street station is very close to the art museum and the such. from there you can get around to the other parts of the city.

so yeah, sober's suggestion could be a very viable solution.

i forgot about camden....its a shithole, but if you stay close to the river, you should be fine. thats closer to philly then the airport.

as others have mentioned, where to stay depends on what you want to do there. If you want to stay near the airport, check out priceline...I have been able to get the Airport Marriot for $50/night several times.

Once place I would check into is Cherry Hill, NJ. It's about 10 minutes over the Ben Franklin Br. and is a nice area with several nice hotels. It's about the same distance to Center City from there as it is from the Airpoirt. You can take the PATCO into center city if you desire.

It might be hard to find something decent in the city for under $150.

take.

the.

train.

you can stay close to the airport (for little $) and take the train into the city. http://www.septa.org/

what part of the city are you visiting/doing business in, etc.? philadelphia is much larger than here, and there are ++ different neighborhoods, etc. can't help you much re: local flavor/recommendations without that info...

you can hotwire the Marriot for like $50 or $60 a night, but then there's nowhere to park unless you use their deck, which is another $25 or $30

i am just visiting my friend (my old boss) in philly. i have never been to philly... just have driven through philly. so what i will be doing is hanging out with him and some sightseeing. we may go to nyc for one day, too. i won't rent a car in philly and my friend may have to work while i am in town. so i wanna get around in philly by walking or public transportation.

it would be hard to get a hotel room by $100 a night, so i try to look it up with a price up to $150 a night. $150 is enough to get a hotel room near the city center?

150 can easily get you one especially now that the summer season is over, i know my parents use priceline and stay downtown for like 80-90 during the school year.

i ended up hoteling it around the US for a couple weeks. i'd just stick with the suburb closest to the philly airport (or stay by the actual airport itself). you can get a room at a standard hotel (holiday inn exp, la quinta) for right around 100 a night. but thats probably about as good as youre gonna get for a weekend. or if youre feeling lucky, you could call arouond when you get to town... you may be able to find a place near the airport thats not full for the night, and talk them down. i did that a few nights and saved up to 30 bucks each time it worked

i never really learned how to tell if a hotel is nice though. hahaha you cant even judge by price... i stayed in a hampton inn by the oklahoma city airport that was like 90 bucks with tax, and i didnt feel comfortable taking my shoes off -- but ended up at this homestead suites or something (40 a night) in oregon and it was actually really nice.

Sort of correct..you can hotwire or priceline it for $50, but it's only $12/day for the deck. I did this recently

Headed to philly next month for 4 nights. Hotel options are right by City Hall or Penn's Landing.

Which would you choose?

City Hall because you'll be in the center and walkable to other districts. Check out Monk's Cafe for the best mussels ever and lots of great Belgian beer. If you stay in Penn's check out Eulogy - another good Belgian bar.

Eulogy is part of the reason I'm leaning towards Penn's

It is all walkable. But you will be closer to more things in Center City near City Hall. If you are planning to mostly hang out in Old City then stay near Penn's Landing. But either way you will easily be able to walk to most places.

I went to Philly for a day and nite last year. They have one hostel which isn't really that cheap and was full for weeks leading up to the concert. I asked a cab driver when I was there and he recommended some cheap place that was 10 min walking distance from Penn's Landing. They didn't take reservations and it actually ended up being a prostitute hotel, lol. It was cheap, had a bed and a pillow, and the showerheadless shower had a very little bit of hot water. Next to medina hotels in Morocco, it was probably the nastiest place I've stayed anywhere in the world. But I was too tired to care and didn't have any problems. I have no idea the name but if you're hard-up for a cheap place, ask a cab driver. I don't see it on google maps (go figure lol).

^It was probably the Parker Hotel. And if you are looking for Drugs and Prostitutes you will find it. But there are plenty of good places in the city to stay at. City Hall is more centrally located, where as Penn's Landing is on the eastern most side of Center City. Really just depends on what your plans are here as to where you would be better off staying at.
