something in good shape with at least the following specs:

*1.8ghz CPU (no celerons or whatever they're called these days)
*512mb RAM (this is easily upgradable so i can be flexible here)
*40gb HDD (not very important, will use external drive for mass storage)
*wired and wireless ethernet
*macs are not out of the question, but i probably can't afford one as nice as i want

i would also like something that is less than 2 years old. i have a decent desktop that I may be willing to trade. if you have anything that you think I may be interested in reply here/pm me/IM me/whatever you want.

dude laptops have become so cheap, get a new one. i would never buy a used laptop.

laptops with 1.8 GHz core processors, 512 MB ram, and 80 GB hdds cost right around $1,000. (2.0 GHz, 1 GB ram, 120 GB hdd for $1,200)

btw, someone is selling an apple laptop here:

^^ you won't find too many around here, keep an eye on Craistlist tho. just email lowballish offers until someone takes one

Though you can sometimes get Celeron based laptops for $350-$400...I'd get that before I paid $300 for a year old laptop thats out of warranty. I really, really doubt you'll be doing anything with that laptop where you'll notice the difference in processing power.

if you want to go the new route just keep an eye on:

Hey I have one that's almost exactly what you are looking for:

Acer Aspire 3618
1.8 Ghz Pentium M
512mb Ram
60GB HDD
802.11b/g + RJ-45
15.4" WXGA CrystalBrite
4 x USB
XP Home

Less than one year old and very lightly used. I'd say under 200 hours easily, probably closer to 100. I bought it and just still prefer my desktop so it sits around unused. Looks brand new, I have all the original documentation and backup CDs. I'd like to get $500 (retail was $750), I can throw in some other software too if you need it...we can talk about that if you are interested.

^^ offer them $400 if it is used - keep in mind that it is only ddr 1 and a single core processor,
with a 128mb vid card. exclude all card reader/usb/firewire parts from consideration,
as those can be had cheap, and should not bump the price.
also, exclude burners etc since you can get an external that does better.
key features I saw was a 5400 rpm drive, 3400+ amd, 128mb vid.
bid on those alone, since the monitor portion isn't special either.
also, a mouse doesn't figure into price either - nor should a wireless adapter,
as laptops should come with wireless standard at this point, and all are about equal.
