Only disappointment I'm having with the album is the fact that I've heard these songs before.
Actually sounds like a best of collection (i.e. you can hear Knives Out in a much improved from the live version of Reckoner, bunch of great bass lines especially from Nude and House of Cards, etc.). Thom was right when he said the album was minimalistic compared to HTTT.

My snap judgment is 4/5. I think my main complaint is that the abbum feels too short. At 10 tracks I wish a couple of the songs were fleshed out a little more (Nude and All I Need could each last another minute it feels like) and Videotape didn't have enough of a punch at the end. Open Pick (oops Jigsaw Falling Into Place) kicks some ass. I had multiple Thom's in each ear throughout the song.

Nude + 15 steps are my favorites.

the entire album is very good to me. I need to wait a week or two of listens to process it in my radiohead album list.

I've been switching favorite tracks with every listen - before I was listening to Faust Arp on repeat and now it's House of Cards. This may not be their best album, but it could be.

and then another year or so to confirm

at least thats how it is for me. I have an initial reaction, reaction after a couple weeks of heaving spinning of a new disc. Then 6 months to a year later is the real test for me.

Exactly.

I was familiar with all the tracks from hearing them live and having some live versions, but this album is absolutely blowing me away.

Pleasant surprises were/are "Faust Arp", the re-worked "Reckoner". The album flows very well... "15 Step" is a perfect opener and "Videotape" is a great way to end it.

This is my 4th listen through this morning, and I think I can already rank this record #1 this year, taking the spot of Okkervil River. Of course, I had a Radiohead bias to begin with, but damn, this is a solid album.

Nude and All I Need <3

though I totally agree with Cif that All I Need had the potential to be a lot better/longer, it felt cut off

"all I need" was one of the tracks I was really curious to hear because the live versions were so bare bones. It turned out really well. Definitely one of the best on the record.

There isn't a single track that should be skipped on this record, imo.

I agree, All I need is one of the stand outs..

I also kinda like how videotape feels like Bjork's "all is full of love". And I must say lyrics on this album are better than a lot of their previous albums.

This isn't really wowing me.

I'm not saying it isn't good, but the first time I've heard every single one of their albums, I've been really floored. This is just like, "yeah, this is all right."

I'm in this camp. After a couple listens I'm unimpressed. Hopefully after further listens it'll grow on me, but currently I'd put in on par with Hail to the Thief, which is one of my least favorite Radiohead albums.

Johnny interview from Rolling Stones:
Quote :
"Why did you choose to release the album this way?
Partly just to get it out quickly, so everyone would hear it at the same time, and partly because it was an experiment that felt worth trying, really.
Why the variable pricing?
It’s fun to make people stop for a few seconds and think about what music is worth, and that’s just an interesting question to ask people.
How would you respond to complaints about the sound quality – that 160 isn’t a high enough bitrate?
I don’t know, we talked about it and we just wanted to make it a bit better than iTunes, which it is, so that’s kind of good enough, really. It’s never going to be CD quality, because that’s what CD does.
What goals did you have for the album itself?
I suppose we wanted to get back slightly to Kid A in that we were spending longer experimenting and trying stuff out — it wasn’t so much of a performance-based thing, like Hail to the Thief. Other than that, it’s the usual thing of turning up with these songs and the pressure is, “Don’t fuck it up, don’t record them badly, don’t do bad arrangements of them, and do them justice.” So that’s what we’ve done.
What are your touring plans?
That’s exactly what we finally started talking about. Now that the album’s out, we can get together exactly how and where we’re going to tour."
