There are a million things with education they need to fix with lottery money, not just teacher raises. It should improve over the next few years. At least, this is what I hear.

When my company doesn't make a profit they don't give out raises either. It's the real world. Unfortunately the real world for teachers is one where the people managing the money would have shortfalls despite lotteries, school bonds, tax increases, etc.

private school teachers dont usually get paid more money, from what I've heard.

And that's only wake county... they're not going to cut the state raises... so the teachers will get a 5% raise instead of 5.25, and other employees will get 4% instead of 5.23% ... if the state legislature goes thru.

And the Education Lottery is state-wide, not specific to wake co.

They get paid LESS and they have little to no benefits. I work with several teachers that spent upwards of a decade or more in private schools and bailed on that for the better pay and much cheaper/available benefits from the state.

Unless I read that wrong, I don't see what the big deal is. They are likely to get a 5% raise from the state (more than the 4% for most state employees), they just won't get an ADDITIONAL raise from the county as well. Cry me a freaking river.

Teachers spend so much time bitching about their paycheck that it's no wonder nobody learns anything in public schools anymore. They don't have any time left to teach.

no, we don't have time to teach anymore because in addition to teaching, we are becoming more and more responsible for children's behavior, which parents are quickly delegating to us, making sure students score well on standardized tests as opposed to learning the material (which is NOT the same thing), dealing with students (and parents) with the entitlement attitude, physically fitting 35 kids in rooms designed for 20 kids, and the list goes on.

from what I've heard the administration is growing, fire those clowns and use the money for teachers. Or better yet , start a voucher system and let the market administrate the schools.

wait, there were people who expected the lottery to actually help the education system?

I thought it was pretty common knowledge that state governments use lotteries to replace the existing funding, not supplement it.

if the raise is higher than consumer inflation rates, then it's not a COLA. That is definitely the case here.

Teachers are one of the least payed people in the job market.
You try getting $28k a year when you start, having to be "highly qualified" (No Child Left Behind), dealing with over crouding, being the kids parents, and the list goes on.
Also, you try having to be at work at 6:50 am and not being able to leave till 4:00 pm.
Also, if you need to take a day off, you have to pay for it.

Teachers deserve a raise.

boo fucking hoo. It must be a terrible job to pay great wages for a group of people that only work 9 months a year, gives time off for every state and federal holiday, provides health insurance and various benefits, and only makes you work 8 hours a day after you account for their lunch break.

^ yea summers off are great.... that's why i'm working 2 SUMMER jobs (while pregnant) to make ends meet because after taxes i make about 20k for 10 months of work. We only get paid for the time students are there. our supplement is a joke - it's taxed 50%! Not to mention the money I spend out of pocket just so my students can do labs and hand on activities. I even have to provide the pencils for the standardized tests that are required every month now from our state and NCLB.
it's not an 8-5 job. it's a 5:30am - 8pm job in my case because you can't leave your work at the office when you're a teacher.

Lunch Break?? hahaha. If you count the 20 minute lunch duty where I can eat my lunch standing up while trying to break up fights.

it's summer time and i'm still getting calls from parents to set up conferences because they just realized their child put 0 effort into this past semester and failed my course, despite weekly communication and progress reports with them.

it's hard enough to keep teachers in this state.. it's not the teachers fault that 8,000- 10,000 students are entering Wake County's school system next year. They're doing the best they can with the little resources the county is providing. They need to tax those moving into the school system with school age children. If these families want to live in Wake County and send their children to Wake county schools and reap all the benefits... It's the most sought after county to work in in the state. but the headaches aren't worth it in my opinion.
I'd rather live in Wake but teach in an adjacent county and not deal with all this.

People don't go into teaching for the salary... it's hard enough trying to make ends meet on the little I earn but at least I come home every day knowing I'm doing something worthwhile with my life.

it seems like you have a lot of issues about public schools and teachers...

Before you keep bashing you should really go and look at several of the schools we teach at. It isn't pretty...

All of the good teachers keep being run out of the profession due to the fact that the students don't care, the parents don't care(for the most part), and admin doesn't offer much support.

I could complain about my paycheck but I am making it(barely), but I do have to work this summer to make ends meet until I get my paycheck again in August.

We have had some crappy math teachers at the school i teach at the past year. It was so bad that I volunteered to give up my planning to teach an Alg 1 class because the other teacher was bad. Another veteren teacher also gave up her planning to do the same thing. Now I didn't perform any miracles, but I definately had more pass the EOC and most of those students wouldn't have even come close if they stayed with the other guy.

Another teacher had Honors Alg 2 and she had only 2 students pass the EOC(out of ~25). We had one teacher quit after the first day and another teacher quit after the first 9 weeks of the second semester.

I also am redoing the Alg 1 curriculim that is being taught at the school because how it is being taught isn't effective. I will be teaching 2 classes of Alg 1 next year and I will be teaching IB Math 1(Precalc/Trig) and IB Math 2(Calc and Stats).

for everyone that says teachers are not educating ppl or doing their job..

try teaching a class of 25 kids that want to learn along with 5 that dont give a fuck and just want to make your day hell. and its not like you can dicipline them, b/c there are no real options for consequences. if you send too many to the office, you're a bad teacher that can't handle your room. if you call the parents they defend their child b/c "s/he would never do that" (when did this change.. if my teacher called home when i was in elem, middle, high school i got my ass kicked).. my gf is a teacher and she has actually had a parent tell her that he was gonna come up to the school and they were "gonna roll" whatever that means (threat?)

haha, I guess only teachers know differently. 8 hours a day my ass...I start work at 6:45 am, and usually dont leave until 4, then put in a couple of hours after dinner for grading and prepping for the next day. It's not hard to plan for 1 class, but 3 takes a long damn time.

^^^ they were prolly gonna play yahtzee

but on a serious note i definitely salute all the teachers that pour their heart and soul into their career. for THOSE teachers (and i know many personally) I do not think they are justly compensated. Sure a lot of teachers do coast by these days, but there are still a LOT who care a great deal and put a lot of time in. Dont forget, teachers in the higher grades tend to put a lot of time in outside the classroom. Just because they are only at their school for normal working hours doesnt mean they might not be putting in more time than some of us.

i have a few friends who teach HS who are constantly doing research, grading HW and tests, creating HW and tests(and working the problems out in full for solutions sometimes for both HW and tests), etc. and almost all on their time outside of work at home. Im not saying they should be worshipped or that they do more work than many of us. But its not some 'drive to school, read from a pre-made lesson plan, go home. (for only 9 mos a year)' cake walk many people make it out to be.

everyone likes to blame teachers b/c they are the face of the education system and are the ones responsible for what is learned. really it is the 50 bazillion administrators getting ridiculous salaries. it is also the government mismanaging our money.

charter schools get the same amount of $ per student as public schools, but they dont get any $ for buildings, libraries, gyms, athletic teams, etc. They work from a smaller budget and when run efficiently they can provide higher teacher salaries, better or just as good of facilities (after having to pay off all the start-up loans, building loans, etc.), and be a top tier school. while also being run by members in the community that have ZERO experience in running a school. (in my charter schools case nobody on the board of trustees had experience in education. they were mostly business people)

i went to a charter school in middle school when it first started. we had to meet in cramped church buildings while our temporary mobile units were being built and could afford to only have a basketball team. but even then our school was doing better than 80% of the other public schools b/c they hired the best teachers. i had a PH D from southern california as my science teacher! this same charter school is now in the top 5 in the state, w/ an amazing new facility (including a new football stadium and track they had to pay for) and plans to expand into a high school progressively starting this fall. the waiting list to get in the school is over 600 LONG!

how in the world does a school that doesn't get all the grants and freebies that public schools get and has a board w/ no educational background have better test scores / facilities / teachers / parent involvement ?
-b/c govt. is inefficient, lazy, apathetic, and has too many hands in the till. blame your govt, not the teachers who for the most part are working hard. (although i do remember a number of lazy ones)

teachers are government workers for a reason. don't go blaming the administration for the laziness of the people under them. All the teachers in here are crying a fucking river about working an 8 hour day. If it's that difficult, than get another job that pays the same wages and provides the same benefits. When you can't find it, then stop bitching.
