How much of a lost of knowledge will their be if I decided to take CSC 116 without E115. What do you learn in E115 that is essential to what you will learn in CSC 116?

if you are familiar with unix/linux then you are missing nothing - even so if you are able to pick it up quickly on your own - you can and then test out....

all engineers are required to take it - but if you aren't an engineer and just want to take csc116 then the prereq shouldn't be a problem - but getting into the very fully and usually restricted courses might be

If Jason Maners is a cool enough guy, I'm going to be hired as an E115 TA for the fall. You can ask me questions if you need help.

You should definitely learn basic Unix commands to navigate terminal because I took CSC 112 and a LOT of the students in there had no idea what the "pwd" command did, and the CSC TAs don't have time to teach an E115 refresher.

jason used to read here from time to time and has a username - i haven't talked to him in a bit but the last i heard i think he was going to be teaching a section or two of csc116 so would be able to answer probably better than before - try emailing him [linkhttp://www.csc.ncsu.edu/directories/faculty_info.php?id=2349[/link]

At least learn how to change/make directories (cd, mkdir), copy files (cp), run nedit (nedit&), and list files (ls) within a Unix environment. Those are the most common things about Unix that people don't know when taking programming.

Has anyone ever taken CSC112 without E115? Does the department really enforced you to take E115 first before taken CSC112

They offer a test-out exam that you can take in order to get the prerequisite you need, and not have to take the class (if you already know the stuff)

what kinds of questions will the test ask you? I also took PMS 100. As an applied math major, they don't require you to take E115, but E115 is subsitituted for PMS 100. I'm then assuming PMS 100 and E115 are equivalent

Jason from E115 land here to answer a few of the questions.

1. It is up to the individual instructor of the course on whether or not they enforce the prerequisite. All CSC116 instructors require it.

2. E115 is not designed to be a hard class! E115 is designed to teach you what you need to know in order to navigate the NCSU computing environment. For all the information you could ever want about E115, snoop around the website at http://www.eos.ncsu.edu/e115/. We have our entire textbook online as well as other assignments that could help you out. I guarantee that if you come to class and make an attempt at the assignments (before the night before they're due) you'll do just fine and learn all you need.

3. Place Out Exam. There will be a place out exam offered on August 25th @ 9 AM. For more information as far as the ins and outs visit http://www.eos.ncsu.edu/e115/course_info/po_exam/

If you have other questions the send me an email at jason_maners AT ncsu.edu

Jason, thanks for the link to the exam details, I hadn't known that I needed to register for it.

Is there any difference between the laptop version and the normal version other than using your own laptop?

No difference in what the exam covers. If you are enrolled in a laptop section we require you to take the exam using a personal laptop. Otherwise, you'll take the test in a provided computer lab (Windows based).

E115 is the easiest class ever - I would take E115 before CSC116 - you dont have to though, but it helped me a lot since I take my classes through distance education and I didn't have to go to campus and use the labs - I learned to use the VCL through the UNIX commands learned in E115

If you're familiar with UNIX though, you're good to go - I learned UNIX before I took E115 and just learned about the AFS, but anything helps I guess

Our TA literally told us what was gonna be on a quiz and give us time to take notes (we only wrote stuff we'd need for the quiz), and then we'd take the quiz fifteen minutes later. It was a joke, sure enough. Got to fuck around with GIMP which was fun, and design a website, but other than that I was bored out of my mind.

The one thing I benefited from the class was that the TA mentioned TWW and that's how I became involved. Can't even remember the dude's name.

I took the place out exam last fall, and it was held in a red hat lab. Not that it makes that large of a difference though.

If you have ZERO unix/linux experience, you could self-study the E115 materials, and learn everything you need in a few days of moderate effort.

but if you arent able to self-study, and you dont know anything about unix/linux environment at NCSU, then you better take the class.

because it's some foundational shit that you need to know, and no one is going to want to explain dumb shit to you like how to navigate directories, when you should be learning about programming objects.

No, E115 is not required for CSC112, but I strongly recommend some form of E115 (whether taking the class or placing out via the exam). My at-the-time boyfriend and I took it together and he had no idea what he was doing because he was in PAMS. I think there are a few sections that aren't restricted to CoE only...sign up for those.

E115 as easy as it was... was at least PARTIALLY useful.

You setup your NCSU webspace, learn how to navigate unix, and learn a couple other marginally usefull pieces of information... All can be found on websites, but as a freshmen I didn't know where to look for that info, now I do, but general internet know-how has progressed tremendously in the past 7 years (GOD I'm getting old)

I don't think it should be a pre-req more of a coreq, pre-req's pospone actually learning for another semester. There's nothing you actually need that couldn't be taught along side an existing course... I took E115 and then CSC116 and personally would have rather gone ahead with CSC116 my first semester so I could have been done with all the CSC classes earlier and maybe I wouldn't have taken csc316 my VERY last semester...

E115 is entirely unnecessary if you know how to use an internet search engine.

Read the only E115 page and take the place out exam.

^^ The same for other departments too. I remember envying this one dude who somehow used a loop in the system to take a co-req along with the coures he wanted because he already knew what he was doing, he just didn't have the credit for it.
