lol I'm fine with the treadmill. I just put on Hulu/Netflix and crank it up. Beats trying to run in the snow and ice

no. I've only been running since like May 2011 and I still haven't had a half that I didn't come out of without an injury so I think I'll give myself a couple more years until I think about training for a marathon.

I went from not being able to run a mile to doing a marathon in about 3.5 years... It can be done quicker than that

That's about my time to get to a full . But my hypermobility seems to open me up to an above average amount of injuries, so do find a good PT if you have something plaguing you.

This week was weird for me - I had the 'shakes' around 3.5m Tuesday, which is typically low blood sugar, but I ate fairly unhealthy that day. Had a Small cinamon thing, slice and breadsticks, jawbreaker, payday bar and ran around 5:30. Sprite and hot dog seemed to fix that feeling after. Did 1.5 that night. The day after I could only do 3 before completely feeling drained :/.

I'm taking in plenty of protein and definitely plenty of carbs, and do daily vitamins and fish oil. Not sure what I'm missing. Definitely not calories.. think I picked up a pound last week.

Races - Doing Krispy Kreme then the Shamrock Full March 16th. Figure the best time to do a 2nd full is soon after the 1st. I'm looking to do faster halves and tris after that and back off full distance for a bit.

Punched Monday right in the face.
15.2 miles - 2:12:00 - 8:42/mile pace.
Slightly dehydrated though, trying to refuel through chills and a fever.

I love the new jacket I just got, but despite good ventilation I still feel I lost a lot more fluid than normal through sweat.

The chills is like the worst symptom to deal with. I've never run that far through a fever - congrats!

I went to a running store today and tried on Saucony's Kinvara. I didn't buy it impulsively but I know they have a similar kind called Varrata. What is the difference?

I'd been running on Nike Free 2.0, but I don't like the lastest version at all. Thinking about going back to my old brand, Saucony.

eeked out marathon #2 yesterday in myrtle beach. did virtually NO training this time around, since the marine corp in October. (Daylight savings time and work killed my drive.) Somehow, miraculously pulled a sub 4 hour mark. Feel sore today, but not nearly as bad as I thought I would...

Really wish I could have trained for this one. Could have beasted it if I had done a proper training regimen...

Saturday - 19 on the treadmill. Never doing that again!

I think eating the last 3 donuts was still a more painful experience

^^^^^sub 4 is pretty amazing! That's my goal at the moment. How long have you been running? I don't think I've run enough / have the conditioning to handle that distance without training.. my body just breaks down around 20. This time it was a weird knee/locking pain at the end but I think I'm blaming the TM on that one.

I started in about 09, doing the City of Oak's half. Worst day for running- rain and just a shade over freezing. At about mile 9, I hit a water puddle and had that whole, "why the heck am I doing this?" moment. Braved it out, and finished in 2:00. An older guy at work (late 50's) smoked me. From then on, I swore I'd never let that happen again, and I was hooked. The runners high is absolutely addictive.

When you get the first marathon out of the way, its funny how easy the half's look from then on out. I love it.

I did that for a half. It was awful. Trained for about 3 weeks, then did nothing for the next 8 weeks, got up and ran a half.

Do not recommend.

This year I think I might actually do a half and try to do it for a real time (2:10 in the roll out of bed one a couple years back). If I could hit around 1:45 I'd be really pleased.

^^almost. the older guy at work suckered me into it. I did a few "runs" beforehand, but had no clue what real training meant. definitely didnt know you were supposed to put bandaids over your nipples to avoid chafing, and paid the price for sure. Felt like I couldnt walk after that for a solid day.

but as a general rule, I maintain a pretty healthy diet with lots of exercise. The running just became a part of it. Now its about getting better. I dont ever really care to qualify for any of the big races, but would love to get a marathon down into the 3:35-3:45 range. With training, I bet I could.

I've done 2 actual race half marathons, I recommend doing a flat one, although my City of Oaks overall time was faster, miles 6-10 fucking sucked (Imagine running Wade Avenue)

I ran my first unofficial half around Lake Johnson

Later I ran an unofficial 5 back to back 5k's in Umstead (15.5 miles). That's the longest distance I've ran.

Lots of 10 and 12 milers though before the knee injury.

I think the last 6 of the MCM are all uphill, and the incline gradually increases.


Or it at least feels that way.



But really, once you move up in distance and/or difficulty, scaling down is more comfortable. It's like reminiscing on how daunting it was to run "the mile" for PE in grade school, but now who's king of the track, you little twerps.

Haha.

Mentally the half distance helped me break up my full training runs.. they would start with something like "do 3 slow warmup 'nothing' miles then 10 faster than race pace miles and that's a half boom! add 2 whatever miles". Those whatever miles hurt but I didn't really think of them until I got there. Padded an 18 this month around 2 slow, 13 fast, 2 slow, and the last one did short sprints to use up energy and didn't feel bad walking a couple mins. The warmup miles I try not to even count in my head.. they're 30 seconds slower and don't feel draining, and I'm usually fighting my body into slowing down. Eat gel bites every 2 miles to chunk up the run and what to look forward to.

I used to suck at hills because I tended to avoid them. Even running up slow drained me, but I've been doing base treadmill incline at 2 (slower pace), and a couple quarter mile series of incremental heights every .03. After getting up to 10 going back to 2 feels fine. This seems to have helped a lot.

I couldn't beat an 8 minute mile in elementary school. I was in so much better shape then too (I think) :p

Did a 20 miler today, just under hours.

Damn those last 2-3 miles get hard. I guess I need to bring along more to eat and drink. I had a gel before, a gel at 6 miles, gel bites at 10 miles, another gel at 15 miles, and about 20 oz of water during it all.

I won't be running much for a little while, probably won't have the energy.

Starting a strength / conditioning plan / no carb diet tomorrow.

gotta fix some injuries and get back to fighting weight.

Bleh, I am such an injury magnet.

Two weekends ago, did 6 miles outside then 4 on a treadmill later. Tried to do 2 more that night (guilt from eating those horrible donuts) and my entire left leg felt bad when I landed. Odd. I stopped and felt fine 2 days later on a treadmill workout.

Last weekend, did a 19 on a treadmill (snow). Usually do a 1 or 2 incline to make it feel more like a run, and because I suck at hills, but I did about 6 0 incline miles on this. 18 miles in my left leg does the same thing. Weird. Little more worried now. 2 days later my leg felt weird for a quarter mile, then I was perfectly fine all week.

Saturday same thing happens 13 miles into my long run but this time it doesn't go away. Pain radiated from my knee on impact across my entire leg, and there's no real focal point of badness. Just all around. I shifted my form/stride and the pain moved around from just knee, below knee, above knee, and altered when it came from foot landing to leg bending. I tried altering my stride - had an even more midfoot strike and scrapped the ground on impact, or tried to lift my leg more and use quads on my stride. Both kind of worked but the pain went away/came back every quarter mile or so.

I'm a bit worried because that was supposed to be my 20 and the next 2 weeks are taper weeks before my full. I *think* this IT - the whole leg/lower leg threw me off but I think the IT connects to the tabia. I don't think I heel strike - my cadence is around 180 (a little under for marathon speed, a little over when doing short runs) so I'm usually stressing out my calves/achilles/feet more than my IT band, so this is a big surprise to me. Post-run I usually was more adamant on stretching those muscles and did not think the IT band was tight.

Any suggestions on what to do before the race? Right now I'm trying

* Dust off the foam roller
* Epsom-salt baths
* One legged squats to strengthen the band
* PT appointment but my doctor is booked this week
* Ordered an aquatic belt if it gets nasty

Definitely taking tonight off for running. I was planning to run an 18 this weekend, and 10 next but I have to see how this goes. Today I can feel it when walking. Not painful but noticeable.

I would find another doctor to go to ASAP if yours can't fit you in.

Not that I think this is your issue, I just wince anytime I hear about something that reminds me of pilgrimshoes' story.

My rule of thumb is that if the pain keeps hindering me for more than a few minutes or if it causes me to change my gait and it still hurts past a week, to go and get checked out.

Ew. My very first half I did something similar. Knees flared up bad a few miles in and every step started to become more and more painful. I force finished the run - maybe the longest period of pain I've been in. Nothing broke but I limped for a couple weeks. That and my friends drug me out to walk around Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom the day after. I used the railing to climb up that fucking giant treehouse.

I'm about the same way after that. I'll try to run through fatigue pain but stop on pain pain. Though I still had a mental battle with myself for a good mile with a part of me refusing to chill the hell out and call the run early.

I saw a few vids on mcconnell taping or another kind of knee taping that I may try tonight. I may run an experimental half mile just to see how my leg reacts. Have you tried aqua jogging at all? That's my next step if its still bad. I just can't imagine doing it for an hour :/

wear aqua shoes if you do, it tore the soles of my feet up pretty badly

I had no problems going for as long as I wanted to go, the skin missing from the soles was my limiting factor

I was thinking deep jogging. I amazoned a swimming belt. I'll definitely get shoes if I use my crappy apartment pool (at least its indoors and heated). When you were doing that, did you keep your arms above/below water? I did a couple laps last night in the pool but wasn't sure if I was even being effective.

I kept my arms in the water for resistance, water was between chest and neck deep.

I worked up a sweat doing it

I've started to put the miles back on in preparation for tri season and I'm going to look for a few shorter races (10k or less) before I prepare for my first full marathon this fall.

where do you do tri's?

my first of the season is going to be the jamestown olympic tri... just the second time they're having it but it looks like a solid course.

dunno if you were just interested in his own schedule or if you didn't know where to find them generally, but there are dozens of tris all over the state.

http://www.setupevents.com and http://www.fsseries.com are a good place to start. Also I should plug my favorite event http://www.woodlaketriathlon.com

yes, absolutely. Particularly at the shorter distance tris, you will see many people riding mountain bikes, cheap road bikes, etc. Give it a try.

yup, i did it with a beat up mountain bike for the first time

then did a few with a hybrid, only once i started doing the olympic distances did i upgrade to the road bike.

It's unlikely you'll be competitive if that's what you mean, but it's unlikely you'll be competitive at your first few events regardless of what you're riding.
