it seems that more than half of the lights I'm stopped at

have more stopped cars than moving cars to which we must yield

traffic engineering is inherently socialist

it cares not about the individual driver

yeah, but not your bike

This got bumped?

Ok, how about the on/off ramp on the outer beltline (US1 S) at Western?

You have to all but stop on the highway to get on the NCSU exit in the right lane and you have to slow down to let people merge in the left lane - right there at the same spot.

Every day it has rained in the past week (grateful) that area has turned into a parking lot. I've gotten in 20+ minute traffic jams in three out of the last 5 commutes because of that area.

they should make exit ramps/bridges for all major intersections.

I don't think they're really trying to be innovative.

Why don't traffic lights that interrupt busy highways have an extra set of preliminary coils farther back so they can actually see large blocks of traffic coming and plan accordingly?

Why doesn't every major intersection have a right turn lane? Right turns keep the world moving.

^because they make more money off the gas tax by keeping people idling at intersections?

traffic engineering and roadway design sucks

after taking a couple courses (and my senior design project) on traffic engineering I notice a lot of mistakes out on the roads around Raleigh. But then I think about how hard it would be to fix some of these problems with what there is to work with, especially some of the moronic dual exit/entrance ramps. With that said, the traffic light problems seem like they would be easier to fix.

oh well, glad I'm working on the structural side of things

yeah the section of the beltline from I40 exit 293 thru I440 exit 4 (wade avenue) is piss poor, involves the worst traffic engineering for a highway i have seen, and surprisingly does not have more accidents.

Exit 293 combines a on and off ramp which creates a swerve in pray b.c cars on trying to merge left into the lane that gets on I40 meanwhile the cars in that left lane are trying to merge right in order to get on the I440 exits.

Than you have I440 exit 1D which for some strange mysterious reason has only one on-ramp and one off-ramp. The on-ramp is ridiculously short also pretty much requiring the driver to floor it in order to make speed to traffic in time before the on ramp runs out. Numerous times i have either run out of on-ramp; or was so concerned about getting over quickly i almost did not notice the n00b in front of me breaking b.c he ran out of on-ramp.

3rd as someone mentioned before the Western Blvd exits merges on to the outerbeltline from the fucking left and the NCSU exit 2A is sooo sharp that traffic exiting has to slow down to 35mph on teh highway to safely exit.

^ that road was designed before the volume was there
