I left one of them out on purpose, because it has been topped out and once it opens in a few months, will be the 2nd tallest building ever built. It has broken and will break several other records:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraj_Al_Bait_Towers

Abraj Al Bait Towers

Quote :
"The Abraj Al-Bait Towers also known as the Mecca Royal Hotel Clock Tower is a complex under construction in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. The building holds and will break several world records in the construction world, including:

the tallest hotel in the world,
constructed with the tallest clock tower in the world and
displaying the world's largest clock face,
the world's largest building floor area,
and will become the second tallest building in the world upon completion, surpassed only by Dubai's Burj Khalifa.

The building complex is meters away from the world's largest mosque and Islam's most sacred site, the Masjid al Haram."

Quote :
"Upon completion, the tallest tower in the complex would stand as the tallest building in Saudi Arabia, and the tallest and largest hotel in the world, with a planned height of 601 metres (1,972 feet). It is the fourth tallest building under construction. Upon completion, the structure would have the largest floor area of any structure in the world with 1,500,000 m2 (16,150,000 sq ft) of floorspace. This is the same as Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport, in the United Arab Emirates which is also under construction. It will also surpass the Emirates Park Towers in Dubai as the world's tallest hotel."

Quote :
"In addition, the Abraj Al-Bait Towers will have a four-story shopping mall and a parking garage capable of holding over a thousand vehicles. Residential towers will house permanent residents while two heliports and a conference center are to accommodate business travelers. In total, up to 100,000 people could be housed inside the towers. The project will use clock faces for each side of the hotel tower. The highest residential floor will be at 450 metres (1,480 feet), just below the clocks. The clock faces will be 43 × 43 m (141 × 141 ft), the largest in the world. The roof of the clocks will be 530 metres (1,740 feet) above the ground, making them the world's most elevated architectural clocks. A 71 metres (233 feet) tall spire will be added on top of the clock giving it a total height of 601 metres (1,972 feet), which will make it the second tallest building in the world when completed, surpassing Taipei 101 in Taiwan."

Quote :
"Clock

The hotel tower is topped by a four-faced clock, visible from more than 25 kilometres (16 miles), which is billed by Saudi Arabia as the largest clock in the world. The clock will dwarf London's Westminster Clock, once the largest four-faced clock in the world, as well as the current title holder, the Allen-Bradley Clock Tower in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The dials are more than five times greater in area. The clock's dials are also bigger than the current world champion at the Cevahir Mall clock in Istanbul, which has a 36 metres (118 feet) face with 3 metres (9.8 feet) high digits set in the transparent roof of the shopping complex.

Each of the clock's four faces are 46 metres (151 feet) in diameter and will be illuminated by 2 million LED lights, along with huge Arabic script reading: “Allah is the Greatest”. Another 21,000 white and green colored lights, fitted at the top of the clock, will flash to signal Islam's five-times daily prayers as far as 29 kilometres (18 miles). On special occasions, 16 bands of vertical lights will shoot some 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) up into the sky. The clock's four faces will be covered with 98 million pieces of glass mosaics. The Saudi coat of arms is displayed at the center of each clock behind the dials."

I am shocked too... Saudi scholars find a lot of normal things 'haram' and ban them because they 'could' lead to forbidden things (such as women driving cars). However, I don't know how they gave the approval for this monstrosity right next door to what they consider the purest place on earth, and the house of God.

As I said earlier, this is totally how I feel about it:

These 2 buildings are pretty cool looking... the one on the right is the tallest building in Europe at 302 m (991 feet). They are in Moscow.

Quote :
"The City of Capitals (Russian: ????? ??????, official English name: Capital City[1]) is a multifunctional complex, including two skyscrapers, located on plot 9 in the International Business Center Moscow City in Moscow. The City of Capitals, symbolising Moscow and St. Petersburg,[1] was completed in 2009. Now the "Moscow Tower" is taller than Naberezhnaya Tower and in the CIS with a roof height of 302 metres (306 m with spires) [3] [4] until the completion of the Mercury City Tower (370m) in 2011."

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World%27s_littlest_skyscraper

Quote :
"The proposed skyscraper depicted in the blueprints that he distributed was clearly labelled as being 480" tall and consisting of four floors.[14] McMahon is said to have neglected to mention that the scale of his blueprints was in inches rather than feet.

McMahon used his own construction crews to build the McMahon Building on the small, unused piece of property next to the Newby Building, without obtaining prior consent from the owner of the property, who lived in Oklahoma.[16] As the building began to take shape, the investors realized they had been swindled into purchasing a four-story edifice that was only 40 ft (480 in) tall, rather than the 480 ft (150 m) structure they were expecting. At that time, the 792 ft (241 m) Woolworth Building in New York City was the tallest building in the world. They brought a lawsuit against McMahon, but to their dismay, the real estate and construction deal was declared legally binding by a local judge. As McMahon had built exactly according to the blueprints they'd signed off on, there was to be no legal remedy for the deceived investors.[4] They did recover a small portion of their investment from the elevator company, which refused to honor the contract after they learned of the confidence trick. There was no stairway installed in the building upon its initial completion, as none was included in the original blueprints. Rather, a ladder was employed to gain access to the upper three floors.[2] By the time construction was complete, McMahon had left Wichita Falls and perhaps even Texas, taking with him the balance of the investors' money.[14]"

I wonder how Muslims on Hajj feel about that giant gaudy clock tower overlooking the Kaaba.

It's been a long time coming, but i'm glad that things are getting close to completion down there. (yes i know there are other buildings that aren't, but this one is the most symbolic)

btw, this is crazy:

i walked by where theyre building the shanghai tower today on the way to the tax office. styrofoam takeout food containers everywhere, peasant construction workers. i like how they dangle from the bldgs on non-stretchy hemp ropes to clean the windows all over the city. life is cheap here.

^^ that's how it is in most any city with lots of construction, outside Western Europe, Australia, and NA-Mexico.

Thought I would post one before I resume my work.

So I guess we've gone back to the way of Egypt, and these modern day "pyramids" are being built with slave labor. Something as epic as that built with proper wages would cost at least $5 billion.

^ no way a 250 m building would have only 11 floors. 250 m =~ 60 floors.

^^ rich arab countries have been using almost-slaves for the last few decades for basically any menial jobs in their countries.

It reminds me of the Tower of Babel or a very tall ziggurat.

Also, only in China is speed of construction considered something to be proud of. However, if quality can be maintained it would be an astounding feat, logistically speaking.

The spire has been officially placed on the Freedom Tower in NYC:
http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/10/us/new-york-world-trade-center-spire/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

I am not sure if it will officially count as 1,776 ft though if the spire is just an antenna. The radome was eliminated from the plans.
