"That honestly has to be one of the dumbest fucking things I can imagine anyone doing.

That isn't a road trip.

That is a bunch of retarded nerds hoping they can do something that they'll be able to tell stories about

Only to realize they just drove 2300+ miles and didn't get a chance to see shit but the windshield and some asphalt.

Christ, are you kidding, did you really do that?

"

Get the fuck outta here! Cross-country drives are great. I think everyone should at least do it once if you can.

I drove from FL to the very northwest corner of WA, and then from WA to coastal NC. Both trips were great (although I was moving in both cases--there was some purpose behind it, although I could've opted to have the military move my stuff and just fly out). I want to do it again on a motorcycle, and also in a light aircraft (Cessna or something).

^^ NICE

I wish I could get a month off to do a trip, 2 weeks is practically just a tease.

What was your favorite part of the trip?

hiking in the grand canyon and sedona was pretty fun, as was the red wood forests with the trees wider than my car is long. Walking around the hot springs at yellow stone was pretty awesome as well.
I love driving so this was a great trip for me.

I spent almost $1200 in gas alone.

My fiance was the navigator.

At yellowstone, we entered the west entrance and left the east entrance, traveling the southern half of the loop. Just the drive was a couple of hours.
We got out at all of the pull outs and took pictures and did the walking/hiking trails.

What constitutes a road trip, to you all?

Ratio of driving:time at destination?
Choosing to drive, over another mode of transportation?
The intention of the trip?
A threshold of drive time?

To amplify that: I am at the point where I plan drives based on the road - like I will plan out how long it takes to cross the country on a transcontinental highway - like to follow US 70 from Atlantic all the way to its historical end in Los Angeles - following the historic routing, and taking 8 hours a day would take 10 days.

It was called the Broadway of America, and it was a literal cross-section of America.

Rushmore, Monument Valley, Bryce Canyon, etc, etc. you have seriously cheated yourself."

Abso-fucking-lutely!

My gf and I drove from NC to AZ, then up to MT, and back two summers ago and it was one of the best trips of my life. Camped the whole way (we had a dog) and did a ton of hiking and sightseeing. I still look at the pictures today and wish I could do it again.

The 10,000 mile road trip I took with some friends of mine back in 2006 was awesome. We camped out most every night and hit as many national parks/monuments/etc. in the US that we could. I've been to 38 states so far, and of them all, I really enjoyed Washington.

Me and a friend are in the preliminary stages of planning a trip from Atlanta to San Francisco by way of Badlands, SD on motorcycles. Right now the plan is to do it one way in 9 days. We'll ship the bikes back and fly home. That will be roughly 350-400 miles/day depending on the route.

I've never done anything like this. I've never even been on a real vacation. (When I was a kid, vacations were 1 day at the beach). Since graduating in 2000, any time i've taken off from work has been either injury related or just a day here and there for job interviews, personal business, etc. Needless to say, I'm getting really burned out and need a substantial break. Can't wait.

Now, if I could only figure out a way to fund this trip. I still don't even have a motorcycle yet.
