^ me too pretty much. Mebee waiting is the smart move. Nonetheless, is there any word of a universal player? I'd think Denon would be first to do it...

my money is on Blu-Ray winning. That's why I bought an HD DVD player. I've been collecting HD DVDs at around $10 apiece and I imagine they'll just get cheaper.

^^ Prefer to stay hi-fi. XBox is out.

Are there any BR or HDDVD players that also support SACD and DVDA?

There was a standards-fight for a while, and basically Blu-ray won out last spring. The thing that sold a lot of people was when Blockbuster announced they would be carrying Blu-ray and not HD-DVD.

"300" on Blu-Ray outsold the HD-DVD version 2:1 despite the lack of interactive features on the Blu-Ray version. HD-DVD's still in the fight and all, but Blu-Ray is still doing better overall it seems- and by a good margin.

^ From what I hear -philips ips01 might be one of the few blu-ray players that will (and it's going to be damn pricey since it's a recorder.)

This format war won't be over for at least another year. And by that I mean, there is going to movies coming out for both formats for the foreseeable future. On top of that, the standards haven't been finalized on either format and the players, in general, all suck shit. So whatever you buy now, you're going to be replacing in a year or so anyway, regardless of which format wins. So either get a DF player, or pick the one that has most movies you want to watch and buy the cheapest player for it you can find. With that said, the cards are still stacked in Blu-ray's favor, so if you want to go with the "winning" format, get Blu-ray.

^^^

i would be willing to wager that blueray sold more copies of 300 than the hddvd format did because 300 in hd is for rent on xbox live market place. in general xbox live market place has a lot of hd movies for rent. i don't know if the ps3 offers movies for rent yet. but in general, i don't think what you are saying holds any weight to weigh in on the format wars.

Netflix carries both formats. Blockbuster is a thing of the past with their jewish late fee tactics.

300 also cost more in hd format because it had the sd content on the other side.

Huh? They may soon be a thing of the past, but they don't do late fees anymore. And they adopted Netflix's mail-rental system, while giving the option of exchanging movies at a store for free.

^^^^For the record, ^is mostly right:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blockbuster_online#Elimination_of_late_fees
Quote :
"As of August 22, 2006, Blockbuster discontinued the rental-to-sale policy that had customers pay for the price of the movie minus the rental fee. Now, the rental fee will not be deducted from the sale. Customers may then return the item within 30 days after the automatic sale date to have this charge refunded, less a "restocking fee" of $1.25."

my mistake...its not a late fee...they just 're-check out' the movie every few days and then charge you $25 to buy it on top of that.

yes, because it's obvious that people who want to BUY a movie to OWN it would much rather just RENT

you mean to tell me that you really don't think that 300 in hd being for rent on xbox live market did not influence its sales?

god i hope you are only kidding.

most of you are arguing your point and getting all defensive because you bought into one particular format.

i havnt bought either but im pretty sure blu-ray wins out. those who think blockbuster is going out must be pretty clueless

well as a rule of thumb i do not bet on anything that competes with microsoft, in general. there are exceptions, but for the most part nothing has seemed to change my mind about this.

the 360 picked HD-DVD, but when the next console comes out are they required to pick it up again, or could they switch to Blu-Ray? when 360 came out blu-ray wasnt even on the market yet

i would think that ms thought this out and knew blu-ray was on the brink of release and decided to push forward with the hddvd format. i am sure ms is not a billion dollar company because it makes mistakes such as choosing the wrong hd format or not waiting for a better format to choose.

Uh, actually MS doesn't give a damn who wins the HD format war. They backed HD DVD for the same reason they entered the console war, to prevent Sony from taking over your living room with a device that didn't run a Microsoft operating system. At this point, their entire motivation is to keep the war going on long enough so that digital distribution of HD content matures to the point where it surpasses both formats.

I have a bluray player. I love it. I think it has the most potential, but that doesnt mean it will win the format war. I think it will be whoever can deliver thier format the cheapest, and that might be hd-dvd. Who knows, Im enjoying mine right now. I view HD-Dvd deal with some production companies as both desperation and brilliance. With transformers not on bluray its the first time ive ever thought about Hd-dvd having an advantage over bluray. However, no way im buying a hd-dvd just for one movie. I think transformers is thier ace in the hole, bc I dont think many people care whether the Notebook is in hd or not.

^^that's actually not even true. Not that it even matters nowadays. Who the hell actually BUYS porn anyway?

THere was a comment in the news, direct from whoever put Transformers out, that there was not enough space on the disc for them to put all the supplements they wanted AND have lossless audio. So they had to sacrifice a lossless audio track.

Wasn't someone on here trying to tell me that disc capacity was irrelevant when it came to movies???

this is the only thing bluray has going for it...the blue diodes (is that the right term?) are more expensive to produce (though, of course, with quantity comes a lower price) and it IS, after all, a sony product, which means they're absolute asshats about how they manage who can do what with their proprietary format/hardware/whatever...if it weren't for the fact that 20gb is A LOT of space difference for media of almost exact same size, i'd hope upon hope for hd-dvd to win

but then, with 51gb hd-dvds being a possibility in the not-too-distant future, the margin narrows...ritek's supposed ability to extend the discs (both bluray and hd-dvd) to 10 layers means that we're at 150gb for hd-dvd and 250gb for bluray...which means bluray still has the edge

anything but sony, though

There have been exclusive titles to both formats (for example Casino Royale was only released on Blu-Ray), however this doesn't change the fact that Blu-Ray continually outsells HD-DVD.
