and hearing all the sob stories about how rich people don't know if they have a house or not and how its so terrible for their kids to have to be away from their house and all their stuff and not knowing if its still there or not. one woman talked about how it was sad to always hear about it but now that it happened to her she knows first hand how devastating it is to be displaced

BOO FUCKING HOO. nobodys hurt+ nobodys injured+ you will get another house= a good day

people die, drown, starve and go homeless all the time so don't be such bitches you californians

then fox news just did a segment on A DOG RESCUE and how the animals had been through so much left in a hospital and many of their owners are far away or in Europe and still haven't claimed them. give me a break.

are you kidding me? who's the kid here?

thats all i gotta say.....makes me wanna puke

What do you propose, then?

Katrina victims vs. Fire victims in a sympathy-garnering fight-to-the-death?

i was talking about the individual stories that were on the news, not the entire event. yes for those people i can grieve their story because they lost somebody but all the people on larry king and fox were unharmed except for one woman who lost 2 turtles and a lizard

what about people who lost someone before the fire burned all the remaining memories of that person up into flames? any sympathy for them?

seriously dude...some of the possessions lost aren't just plasmas, a billion dollar home, and a kitchen fit for a professional chef. it's the memories made inside them, or old pictures and memorabilia that can't ever be replaced by their insurance. it's a pretty devasting thing to lose your home...no matter how rich or poor you are.

two of my good friends have lost nearly everything out there.

they're students, on scholarships, and supplement that with loans. far from "rich" as you say.

You're forgetting that politicians, and therefore nobody, cares about poor people. But rich people? That deserves our full and devoted attention.

I have a friend who works in LA - she seems to be doing alright, because her HOUSE ISN'T BURNING DOWN (she actually lives in DC)

I can see how it would be traumatic for anyone, all their precious items in their houses are being vaporized!

the people at the superdome during katrina were the ones too fucking stupid to leave town before a HUGE ASS HURRICANE hit them.

these people are ones who had the foresight to leave their homes before the fires burned them.

of course there is a difference.

why all the hate, Howard? If your house burns down, you are losing a lot more than simple possessions and lots of money. It doesn't matter if you were rich or poor, your home still has significance beyond what money can replace.

elkaybie's post explained my point better than I can.

Boo fucking Hoo. I lost everthing to a fire, my familys second fire and because everyone was out and nobody was hurt it was a BLESSING not a tragedy and i'm not even rich. People die everyday but you want me to sympathize because these people lose a few pictures? what a joke!

It means nothing to me for rich people to lose their homes because they have other places to go and things to do until their house is rebuilt right back on some cliff in malibu overlooking the ocean in a place they know is likely to have wildfires

O and people in New Orleans had no means of leaving, no insurance to replace their homes and what you don't hear about is there are still at least 75,000 homeless people from Katrina that had houses before the storm and aren't being supported by the government anymore.

Quote :
"just cause you're rich doesn't mean it's not traumatic...."

but it does mean its no big deal

possible loss of a pet and belongings is tragedy. I bet these are the same people that cry when their luggage gets sent somewhere else on the way back from aruba.

these people don't know what tragedy is

^^like you wouldn't be upset if your house and everything you owned was burned to the ground?

regardless of how much or how little money you have, losing all you own sucks, especially if it's a pet.

you're pathetic

losing ones home is horrible regardless of income. To not feel sympathy for anyone in this situation shows you are either jealous of their lifestyle or just an idiot.

More than likely mostly due to class differences... and yes, more African Americans were in the lower class in NoLA.

Quote :

I'm sure there was a segment of the population too stupid to leave but there was also a segment of it (most likely the majority) that didn't have the means to leave.

[gross generalization]
Most of the people you saw that were displaced by Hurricane Katrina didn't even own their home. I'd wager money that a lot of people came out far better off for having been through the hurricane with the outpouring of relief funds.

The real difference is that these people actually had a stake in the homes that burned down.
[/gross generalizations]

Your lack of sympathy is disgusting. It is possible that they are both upset by their loss and grateful for the fact that they weren't hurt you know. It's not all black and white.

i'd rather hear about the rich people losing their homes than the poor people

cause the poor people would blame everything on the government, and the whites.

Suffering is always relative

Torture victims say murder victims have it easy
Murder victims would say that rape victims have it easy

Torture victims would LOVE to be raped and then left alone

But just because it's relative, that doesn't mean that getting your house burned down doesn't suck a hell of a lot

So I get it....if you work hard and earn enough money to buy a nice house, then if you lose it, it's OK because it was only your own money...but if you have a relatively small amount of money, and depend a great deal on other people's money then if you lose your house, it's NOT OK because it was someone else's money.
