The show's producers met urgently yesterday to discuss the incident after receiving complaints, including one from a Cape Town viewer who slammed the show for being "vulgar".
The incident, which happened on Saturday afternoon, followed an alcoholic binge by contestants in the Big Brother house.
According to the viewer who complained to the Cape Argus, the incident involved a male contestant allegedly touching a fellow female contestant's genitals while they were drunk. She also said there had been vomiting and vulgar sexual comments.
Joseph Hundah, M-Net's director of operations for Sub-Saharan Africa, said the company was aware of the incident and said that the two housemates had "instigated a physical relationship".
"The housemates began drinking alcohol and later retired to one of the bedrooms. Our belief is that these are two adults over the age of consent that began physical relations," Hundah said.
He said there had been no complaints from the housemates and if a complaint was lodged, the producers would take action.
But the "absolutely shocked" 49-year-old viewer, who preferred to remain anonymous, said she had been "utterly disturbed" at the alleged sexual misconduct and "horror" she had witnessed.
There is one man and three women remaining in the competition.
They each stand a chance of winning $100 000 (about R700 000).
The viewer said the male contestant had told the three women he was going to "bump" all three of them. He apparently said: "I'm going to f**k you with my big black kazunga."
It is believed the man pulled one of the females, who was sitting on a couch, by her legs and tried to undress her.
The man apparently penetrated one of the three females, who was unconscious, with his fingers after taking her to a room.
When the woman contestant came to, she had no recollection of what had happened, the viewer said.
"We are faced with sexual abuse on a daily basis. What message is this sending to the public?"
"It is unacceptable that no apology was made. He abused that woman," she said.
Hundah pointed out the age restriction of the show was 16, but that the producers "sympathise" with viewers who were offended by the programme.
Viewers who wished not to see the programme, could switch off, he said." |
