^^ I'm near State. Thanks for the tip on Lawmens, I'll give them a call. It's a S&W M&P 9c. Davi's was quote $550.

^ Yea, I'll probably just go with the online purchase. Can you recommend a FFL?

in our experience (Fumbler and i), PDHSC has the best prices.

i ordered Fumbler a Ruger Mark III for christmas and PDHSC was the cheapest by far of any of the gun shops.

Lawman's might not sell the M&P to you, but it's worth a call. Lawman's actually had a better deal on both pistols we bought than PDHSC did, and PDHSC would not match prices or come off of the Smith at all. So far Lawman's has been the best deal for me, although I can purchase any of the restricted guns so that's not a factor for me.

PDHSC has a M&P9c in the case right now. I was just there yesterday, don't remember the price though. Was much lower than $550. $475?

Jim's Gun's has the lowest FFL fee in the garner area. $20. I use him and have no complaints.

Call him and see what price he can get for the m&p.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

^^ Just got off the phone with Lawmans, they do sell to S&W to non-LE. Outstanding price.

Have you shot the m&p9c? Might want to get a trigger job. The trigger has been my only complaint about the M&P, mainly because its reset is not crisp and distinct enough for my tastes. Its reset is also somewhat long.

^^ did you specifically ask about the M&P? or just S&W in general, I could have swore that the M&P's had the restricted tag on there, but I could definitely be wrong. They generally have great deals in there, also go by and check out the buy backs.

After hearing that Jim's Gun shop had the lowerst FFL in the area, I gave him a shot. I ordered a new AR off gunbroker, had Jim send out a copy of his FFL. Easy enought....right? I called for two weeks and he kept telling me that it wasn't there. After another week, I got a little fed up and called the seller. He informed me that it was sent over two weeks ago and gave me the tracking number.

I called Jim again...finally he said he had a gun come in, but it had no name on it. It matched my description, so I could come pick it up. Fuck that, when I opened the case, there was a packing slip with my name, contact info and address. Not to mention, the gunbroker ID that I gave Jim in the begining was on the outside of the case.

Jim told me I was "lucky" because he was going to sell it in his shop if I didn't pick it up. The moral of the story...Don't do business with guys that run a shop out of the garage of their home. Spend the extra 5 bucks and go to a well respected FFL.

Here's a 2nd on the Lawmen's and M&Ps. They DO sell S&W to civilians but last time I was there, the M&P was restricted to LE only.

*edit* as far as I remember, this is what is restricted there:

ALL Glocks
S&W M&P
Sig (non SAS & polymers)
seems like something else as well

What's open to anyone:
ALL Springfield (i.e. XDs & 1911S)
ALL Kahr
ALL Kel-tec
Sig: SigPro (Polymer), SAS pistols, Sig P232
S&W: Wheelguns, Sigmas
Police trade-ins & Used guns (i.e. Right now they've got some GREAT looking HK USPc45 Var. 1 from some small dept. that are in really good condition for $550 and some Sig P220s with insane hoslter wear for like $380-ish from some other dept.)

When did you go? They had 5 or 6 weekend before last. I guess people must have jumped at them. Hell, I considered it. Spend $100-150 refinishing it and you have a great looking, (most likely) barely fired P220.

I went 2 weeks ago. There was one with a Krylon green slide and one with a ton of holster wear and was missing the left rear optic on the sight. Sounds like they recieved a few more in since.
My 220 was a trade in but was never issued and had less than 200 rnds throught it when I bought it. The trade ins are a great deal, hoping to get a 226 from them soon.

Dude that REALLY sucks. It's really shitty for that to happen. It is inexcusable. I never wait for him to call me, so I've never had that problem. I just head down there whenever UPS/seller tells me that it's arrived.

I've had that happen at PDHSC. I called and called and they told me it hadn't arrived. What they didn't do is check the packages that had been stacking up.

shevais - I specifically asked about an M&P 9c and was told they had them for both civilian and LE. I hope it's true 'cause as soon as my purchase permit comes in I'm headed straight there!

Seotaji - I shot a glock 23 and M&P 9mm regular as they didn't have any 9c's. I liked the glock but I liked the M&P better. My experience is pretty limited. Lots of range time with dad (retired LEO/military) when I was younger but not so much the last 10 years. For what's it's worth, he was pushing the glock before we went to the range to test, in part because the NY State troopers use the 37. He ended up liking the M&P better. I agreed but I'm sure it comes down to personal preference. They were both real nice.

shevais - yea, Lawmens were really helpful and friendly on the phone. That makes me lean towards them even if I do have to pay a (very) small premium for good service compared to the internet. Plus they gave me the best quote in the area by far. I called around a few other places and was frankly surprised how disinterested some were in selling an ~$500 product.

^^Some people will attach a shoulder stock to a 1911, sort of like an old-school artilery Luger, and have a shoulder fired weapon. However, such a transformation turns the pistol into a .45ACP rifle, and the law says you have to have a 16-inch barrel on a rifle unless you want to register it as a short-barreled rifle with the ATF. Which means that as long as your 1911 has a shoulder stock on it, you must have a 16-inch barrel on it also to keep it from being an NFA-regulated weapon.

You can put the barrel on with that without a problem. However, IIRC, if you put a stock on with a short barrel, you have a SBR (even though it's a pistol), and must register. The long barrel can be on with or without a stock with no issues. BTW, I've heard those barrels have issues with cycling properly.

^^ I could imagine there would be a problem with cycling, the whole barrel would have to cam backwards to unlock and allow the slide to move free. That's a good bit of inertia.

A friend of mine bought the last one from Davi's last week. The salesman said they had several more on backorder. BTW there are two models the 19" and 21". One company sells 20rnd drums, magwell extensions, mag release extensions as well as the parts to modify it to lock back on an empty chamber.

not bad, but right now the only thing I'm looking at is either a Mark II or Mark III, a mosquito or a 239. After I buy the shotgun that I am looking at, might try the gun show for that one.

Got all my reloading supplies in, mounted the press on a 2x6 so I can set up shop anywhere I want to. Between last night and this morning, I sized/trimmed/loaded 100 rounds of new brass, and sized 90 rounds of some of my once fired brass.

I need more primers, I loaded what I have with small pistol primers and I need a source for magnum ones, but no place local has them. Ordering them from an online distributor is expensive.

Hill's Sporting Goods on Capital stocks every type of primer, prices are ok.
Youngguns has them too.

Other than that...the best thing to do is wait for the gun show.
The $20 hazmat fee for mailorder sucks.

Check Hill's. You probably won't find one stocked anywhere, but they do carry more odd things than other shops.

I cut the tangs to .250 on my caspian this weekend, that was some scary shit. the safety fits great, just need some more filing and a little more dremel with a sanding drum to smooth it out.

I finally got my Rock Island back from the factory.
They actually replaced it with another one.
The problem was one of the grip safety holes was oval shaped.

I haven't had the chance to test this one out, but hopefully it works out ok.
The barrel throat/frame feed ramp gap is a little close...I hope it's not a problem.

The grip safety on this one fits a little better...I'm still not sure if I want to put in the Wilson Combat .220" GS. I'd have to grind down a lot for it to fit the tangs because the tangs were fitted to an Ed Brown style (very high grip) safety.

What're your thoughts? Change to the Wilson Combat .220 and end up grinding the GS to an Ed Brown profile, or just leave it alone with its ugly gaps?

if the lower, outer edges of the tangs have not been altered, you could go with a smith and alexander .250 ez fit, it rides a little lower but not much, maybe .125''. if it has been ground for the eb high grip, you may be able to go with a CMC extreme, it is supposedly what fits the caspians thebest. I hate the gaps, i have one I welded up but never fit to try to cover the gaps. let me look for it and I will let you borrow it. PM me your address. Can you post a pic of what you have now? I didnt see a .220 jig on brownells, you would not want to free hand this.

It's not really a 0.220" radius.
It's not a consistent radius at all. Near the top it's smaller and as you get the the bottom of the tang it's 0.25"

This is what my Rock island's GS looks like:

This is what a Wilson Combat GS looks like:

The Wilson will require removing a small amount of material.
If you'll notice the Wilson actually covers the tangs a tiny bit (looking at the pin hole, it's at around 7 o'clock).
If I put this in mine then I'll likely have a gap where the Wilson would normally cover it because my tangs have already been cut for a high GS.
But, since I have to shorten the tangs for the Wilson, then the gap may not be big and may be small enough for me to just grind the GS down to fit.

Every had any experience going from an Ed Brown style to a Wilson?

There are some who have modified the 10/22 to look like an MP5.

GSG (the company) recently got the license to produce .22 copies of the AK. From what it sounds like, the company has their metal receiver, and build up on that to produce the outer look of the weapon desired. Probably based upon their work with paintball and air guns; just moved up in caliber.

I was wondering if anyone had heard about the David Olofson case.

For those of you who haven't, he lent an AR style rifle to a friend who then took it to a shooting range in Wisconsin, where the 20 year old rifle, after approximately 800 rounds on different occasions, fired a multi-round burst. This led to BATFE classifying the firearm as a class III firearm and convicting him as a felon.

I couldn't find an article, but here is a Lou Dobbs bit on the story:
