Quote : | " The corner house she found in northeast Philadelphia was small, but it was enough for the 67-year-old great-great-grandmother who lives by herself.
Then in July, Mills got a rude surprise when she came home from a hospital stay to find a sheriff's notice on the door, saying the house had been foreclosed and she must call about being evicted.
Mills says her landlord told her not to worry because he would "take care of it," so she ignored other letters and notices that came to the apartment. Not until a sheriff's deputy showed up on November 13 did Mills take the eviction notices seriously. He told her she had to be out of the house the next day. So while the avg American does not have a kid till their mid 20's these days this woman was nearly a grandma. Mills is one of a growing number of renters who are being caught up in the nation's foreclosure crisis. According to RealtyTrac, a company that tracks foreclosures across the country, 1,785,596 foreclosures have been filed nationwide so far this year, a dramatic increase over a year ago. RealtyTrac say October foreclosures this year were up 94 percent over last October.
In most states, when a bank forecloses on a landlord, the tenant has no guarantee of being allowed to stay in the property. In addition, neither the bank nor the landlord has any legal obligation to inform the tenant of the foreclosure. Often, the renter first learns of the foreclosure when he or she is being told to vacate the property within a few days or weeks. No one can say how many tenants are finding themselves in this situation, according to Judith Liben, an attorney with the Massachusetts Law Reform Institute. She has been studying this issue and says it's happening in both poor and middle-class neighborhoods." |
In my opinion the most Shocking part of this is that the 67yr old is a GREAT GREAT Grandmother. WTF. My grandma was 79 when she became a great grandmother from my oldest cousin. This must be a quality family; whose genes probably shouldn't be in the gene pool.
So let's think
Mills has child at 17; this child has a kid at 16 (mills age= 33); her grandchild pops one out at 16 (mills age= 49); this child has a baby at 16 (great great granny at 65, assuming the kid is 2)

Well, regardless of her propensity to engage in unprotected sex at an early age, this is kind of bad. She was on notice that the house was foreclosed, but on the other hand, she is most likely poor and wouldn't have been able to understand all the legal mumbo jumbo in the letters she was recieving.
Maybe she's a gremlin and someone dumped water on her and then fed her after midnight. That would explain the close generational reproduction.

I mean it makes sense if you think about it. Say you are a slum lord with a dozen or more rental properties and you are facing financial collapse.
There is not much of an incentive for the slum lord to do the right thing and use that rent he is collecting to make payments on the house he has already realized he is losing. 11/30/2007 2:29:52 PM |
