I sure hope so. I'm not one to usually ask for people to be fired, but our athletics department and how it is run has seemed to be shitty for way too long. A lot of it falls on Lee Fowler. We should come up with a list of reasons why he needs to go.

1. Coaching hires and keeping coaches around for way too long (I'm looking at the volleyball program, before Stubbs was hired). I like Lowe and hopes he succeeds, but the search process was handled terribly. There were way too many leaks. TOB is a great hire, but his people actually contacted us iirc.
2. Adidas. Why we switched to a company that really sucks for college athletics from the best one (Nike) I have no idea.
3. Criticizes the fanbase (lunatic fringe anyone?).
4. Mediocrity, heck even below mediocrity, in nearly all of our non-revenue sports (rifle, cross country, and wrestling are exempt).

So you think the @ ECU game for basketball was a great idea?

I am one who does. I think that is one of the rare games that we KNEW would be in a hostile environment that could get us ready for life on the road in the ACC. ECU is TERRIBLE this year... just fucking terrible. It was an embarrassment last year when they took us to the wire and an even bigger one this year when they beat us.

It SHOULD have been a nice win against a raucous crowd... unfortunately it turned out to be an ACC embarrassment... Clemson played them @ ECU too...

I don't mind playing in front of such a raucous crowd, but not against ECU. The fans can stand losing to like St. Joe's, St. Louis, or some other A-10 Conference like foe, but they will never forget losing to ECU for the first time ever. UNC isn't running out to play @ ECU's high school gym, but they didn't mind playing at Penn.

I'm assuming that he is a UNC grad/fan that is purposely ruining our athletics programs. Either him or his boss.

Where else in the world can you completely suck at your job (compared to other similarly situated athletic directors), never improve anything besides buildings of which a large portion of the money was raised by Bobby Purcell, get paid over a quarter million PER YEAR, make terrible hiring decisions like not hiring a consultant for the basketball search, call your alumni lunatics, refuse to assume any blame ever, set your goals at mediocrity, and spend weeks on end at your lake house?

I am all for giving Lowe more time because he has been thrown into the fire. It's obvious he is under incredible stress and I hope that he can pull his shit together.

Please Fire Fowler and hire me so that I can too sit on my ass all the time, make poor planning decisions, get bailed out by the Wolfpack Club, and collect a little over a quarter million per year. It sounds like my dream job, almost like winning the lottery. Tons of cash and no responsibility or accountability.

I honestly feel bad for Sidney Lowe..........Fowler had ruled him out of the search from the beginning and was a complete failure with every single coach he courted throughout the search. Lowe tried to help Fowler and give him suggestions and tips and in the end Lowe finished his degree and dropped his NBA career just to coach here.

Lowe was Fowler's absolute last ditch effort after failing hard leading his abysmal 'I know basketball' coaching search.

Lowe very well may have been thrown in over his head here having only coached NBA players and systems, which is worlds different than college ball. I know Lowe is frustrated and can't seem to make anything happen, (see his resorting to publicly calling out/blaming his own players for this abortion of a season) and while that is unacceptable, he is not the biggest problem with our athletics at all.

If Lowe goes, Fowler should be leading the way out the door. Our facilities, fanbase, and donor support are way too good for these absolute shit results we've been having for years now.

I am starting to realize that the woes of our athletics reach far beyond the coaching of Sidney Lowe.

If Tom O' Brien does succeed it will not be to Lee Fowler's credibility since someone else found TOB for him.

Sidney Lowe as like-able as he is might turn out to be the most disastrous hire ever if the team keeps playing like this.

But it is Fowler's fault we are in this situation in the first place. Look at Rick Barnes (5th in the nation) and Calipari (2nd in the nation) who Fowler could have potentially hired. I guess we're never going to get a hold of a high level coach with Fowler in charge.

^ Les Robinson was the worst hire ever. Outside of Kelvin Sampson.

Seriously though

There have to be some big boosters who can make this happen. Lee Fowler is just plain horrible at his job.

Les served his purpose, which was to come in and clean up the program and graduate players. That was his job. Herb was hired to get us back to national relevance. Herb served his purpose. He got us to a place that the vast majority of programs without our national history would have been happy with. That was his job.

Our next coach was supposed to be hired to take us back to the ELITE level. Frankly, I'm not sure we made the right hire given that is what HAS to take place. Les Robinson and Herb Sendek did too much to build up this program (and put it on the verge of being taken back to the next level) to let a bumbling AD tear it all down.

At least Les had the excuse of having to work within the context of losing scholarships as a result of NCAA sanctions.

I think that you are jumping the gun a little. Lowe is only in his 2nd season. Furthermore, if we lose out, then Sidney will have already tied Robinson for the longest losing streak in NCSU Basketball history (Les never lost to ECU) which spans nearly 100 years.

Thanks for that sage gem there uncle jed, tell us another! And with the w/l records of our athletics in general that should be a self-condemnation.

Yep, not the coach to motivate them, not the guy who failed to find a coach and had to take the last resort easy-out alumnus hire, this season was entirely on the players this year.

If Coach K was running this team, I think we'd be up there at #3 like we were predicted to be. Of course I know the odds of us getting a coach like K are slim, but even a half decent coach could take our talent and place us at least not in the sewers of the ACC.

gad i hadnt read this. fowler needs to stfu. it isnt like he is a nba gm who is directly involved with player personnell decisions day in/day out, he basically and administrator, no more no less. no need to give your commentary on the players attitudes.

That's the biggest issue I have with Lee. Other than the fact that he's rarely in office.

He's a placeholder, not a vocal contributor. His commentary should be limited to who we've hired and who we've fired. No more, no less.

What everyone should be really pissed about is the entire University Administration not giving two shits about athletics. To have the amount of money coming in and getting no results is pretty piss poor.

* Today, Memphis and Tennessee have a fantastic basketball rivalry as evidenced by this year’s big #1 vs #2 showdown that included John Calipari. After being spurned by Todd Turner for the NC State job when Les Robinson left, Calipari heavily pursued the NC State job two years ago. Calipari was such a ‘done deal’ that Lee Fowler had literally ordered nameplates for the doors and offices of Calipari and his staff. Ultimately, Fowler and NC State found a away to screw up the hire and Calipari now has a monster of a program at Memphis.

Face it…if I am just over .500 in four years here then I will be gone, too. You know this going into the profession and when you are hired by a big school. I take back everything I have said.
