40 gig doesnt.

just comes with 3 wire component cables.

although in the user manual it says the 5 wire component cable is suppose to put out the same as an HDMI cable.

but i asked someone at best buy and of course they said HDMI is the better of the two, which it is, but ive heard from a few that HDMI is barely superior to 5-wire cable

^ u mean composite cable w/LR audio. hdmi is better because it's one wire for digital picture and sound.component cables actually look a little better on some tvs depending on the analog to digital conversion. i too think hdmi is overrated but i do enjoy the conveince of a single wire.

One more question..

I know I can go pick up an HDMI cable for cheap, but is there a cable I can buy that splits out the audio signal? I don't want my TV doing the audio.

I have the HDMI cable for the xbox that splits out the cable to RCA and the other format.

Does this exist for the PS3?

The intent with HDMI is that you shouldn't NEED to split the audio and video. i.e. The HDMI cable should be passed through a receiver or all your devices connected to a TV and the TV's audio output to a receiver.

What do you mean by "RCA and the other format"? I assume by RCA you're talking about 2-channel stereo audio. What is "the other format"? Optical? My TV has both an optical and a stereo output, but lacks 5.1 analog output. Check your TV and see what audio outputs it has. It may be as simple as plugging all your HDMI devices directly into your TV and outputting the audio from the TV to the receiver.

It's called SPDIF or something like that.

I figured it out though. Plug the HDMI into the TV, and plug in the regular or component cables into the PS3 and set the audio out to those cables from the PS3 menu.

You need HDMI to transfer HD sound like TrueHD, DD+, etc. optical and digital coax can't carry that. Your receiver also has to support multichannel PCM bitstreams since almost all high def dvd players and the PS3, too, i believe, do the decoding themselves and then pass the bitstream to the receiver via HDMI.

Optical and digital coax connections both are S/PDIF. S/PDIF is the Data Link Layer protocol that digital devices use to communicate over these Physical Layer connections (see OSI 7-layer model). I can't speak for the PS3, but the XBOX 360 converts all audio streams to DD before outputting and does not support PCM or high-def audio output.

^I haven't seen a receiver that supports Dolby Digital and DTS HD / lossless formats that doesn't support PCM. I wish more devices actually output encoded audio (at least optionally), though.

a lot of low end recievers can't take PCM audio over HDMI at all, theyre just video switchers. Then some can only take 2 channels, some only 5.1 channels, and some 7.1 channels.

Onkyo xx505 for example can't do multichannel PCM over HDMI. My Marantz SR4001 can take 5.1, but not 7.1.

I assume the Xbox 360 w/ HD DVD addon can transmit TrueHD multichannel PCM over HDMI, right? Thatd suck if not

It's physically possible, but currently not supported. All audio is converted to DD before being output, even over HDMI. (Before XBOXes had HDMI, DD was pretty much the only option since S/PDIF was the best audio transport interface available. I presume the software will be updated though. Maybe it has and I just didn't hear about it yet. My XBOX doesn't have HDMI so it doesn't really effect me.)

i would also like to add that I had purchased component cables from best buy until I got my HDMI in, and the picture quality was very very similar. This is on a 55inch Sony LCD 1080i tv. Maybe those of you with 1080p could tell the difference...

^ There's no such thing as an interlaced LCD The TV scales all video to its native resolution. Pretty sure the same applies to LCD rear-projection TVs as well.

The appearance difference between HDMI and component will depend as much on the source device as on the TV.

so how do i switch back to component cables? i brought the ps3 to another TV, left my HDMI cables at my house. i have everything plugged in and its not reading it. i remember i had to switch it in the settings to HDMI option, but i cant even get into the option screen because the picture is not showing up.
