bring on somebody, the best chances ive seen have been balls that went right past the middle of the field, not working through it(lol the 2 goals were created by a defender and scored by a defender)

i already saw the highlights of that brazil game, i guess its over now, but it wasnt worth watching

also, when is somoene gonna realize that bocanegra is a liability in the middle of defense...this puts his running into and destroying our keeper count to what, 3?

oshea doesnt play that much at man utd...hes like the "lets play him when we want to rest vidic/ferdinand or when someone is injured player"

I like that move. Clark and Bradley are pretty much the same player. Feilhaber has the ability to bring some much needed flair into the midfield.

Dempsey's definitely the most talented player on the field now. Which is perfect for Donovan who can now fly under the radar... Altidore will turn out to be a goal-scoring machine. I would actually like to see Clark come out instead of Bradley. I like Bradley's intensity and think he really busts up opponent's attacks. Also, that was a beautiful goal from Onyewu and a terrible offsides call on Dempsey. It was about as bad as that no-call against Sweden back in like October.

Dempsey was offsides on the goal WAY before the shot... ESPN just didn't show a good replay until halftime. Drew Moor looks lost out there.

I think one thing that we will all take away from this game is that our defense has declined, and we won't have as many dominating shutouts as we enjoyed last time in CONCACAF WCQ, and will probably let up the cheap goal every 2nd or 3rd game.

Dude, Corrales and Moor should be nowhere near the starting lineup for WCQ. Spector/Cherundolo/Bornstein are 10x more effective than those two clowns. Beasley (when he comes back from injury) will provide way better defensive support from the left wing.

Good note though: I think Howard has developed into the keeper everyone hoped he would be. Not as good as Keller or Friedel at their best yet, but they were sick nasty. I think he'll get there.

But last time we were starting guys like Greg Vanney and we'd still get an easy shutout.

tim howard should be our #1 for the next 5-10 yrs, ive never been worried about GKs for the US..looks like we could finally have a true striker in Altidore...but god help us in the back on set pieces. i hate watching when we defend set pieces

oh and FIRE MOOR

If you say so, I could be wrong but (I'm guessing last time means WCQ for 06) he rarely featured in WCQ games, especially closer to the World Cup. I also don't see how that's relevant to your prediction of not having as many shutouts. Most CONCACAF teams aren't Mexico and we are definitely able to put better players on the field than we did tonight... we'll be fine.

He was a career MLS defender who would play left back occasionally when we left guys in Europe or injuries or whatever during the qualifiers.

I just think we're circumspect to speed down the wings and it's a lot more glaring than I've ever seen, even with scrub players. The game was tied tonight, but Mexico had a lot more shots than we did. It's one nice thing about a country's best position being its goalkeeper I guess.

(edit: Per the post-game show on ussoccer.com, Mexico had the 18-8 edge in shots.)

This is the lineup I would eventually like to see us use:

-----------Altidore-----Dempsey-----------

Beasley---------------------------Donovan

----------Feilhaber----Edu-----------------

Spector--------------------------Cherundolo

----------Bocanegra---Onyewu-------------

-----------------Howard-------------------

Every time I'm pissed off about team selections and starting lineups, I just think to myself how far the US has come to where it isn't an automatic starting XI and we actually have good competition at almost every position (except for Howard in goal)

This was a friendly and some of our top players were hurt. Tonights lineup wasn't what we will probably see in the first game of the 2010 World Cup.

^Who would you put in place of Bocanegra? Gooch is the bigger liability. I am sure Conrad will get some time back there during qualifying.

Gooch is a bigger liability. I think his physical presence alone is enough to keep him in there. No one is going to be pushing him around. No one in the world. He might get beat, but he won't get dommed on, which can be very important. Bocanegra isn't the best, but atleast he's consistent. You know exactly how well he's going to play just about every game and consistency is a big factor in defense. He's kinda like Rio Ferdinand only not as good. That and we don't really have anyone else. Pope is past his prime. Mastroeni is very meh. Marshall is good and young. Spector is good and young but can be used better as a left back right now because we completely lack depth there. I can't remember his name right now, but the young guy who was already mentioned one time in this thread is certainly a guy for the future. I hope someone knows who I'm talking about.

I'm seriously just waiting until the day Marvell Wynne's potential is realized. Seriously, I remember watching him play right back in the U18 World Cup with Freddy Adu. Holy crap! He is fast! He looks like a ninja out there on the field with how swiftly he moves. I think he could be an incredible attacking wing back one day. Absolutely incredible if he's developed correctly. He's young and defenders don't reach their peak until 28-30 so that's good, but I'm just waiting for this guy to have a break out season.

The US has some serious young talent coming up though. We've been winning... yes, winning youth competitions for several years now so it won't be long until that talent starts making it's way through to the full National team. Adu, Altidore, Feilhaber, Zizzo, Marshall, Guzan, Edu, Bradley and so many more... It's gonna be fun watching them compete internationally over the next 10 years or so.

Simek, DeMerit, Bornstein, Parkhurst, Conrad, Spector, Wynne, and Cherundolo are all options for defense above Moor and Corrales. I think the Bocanegra/Oneywu pairing is pretty strong and one of the reasons they had problems last night is because of the horrible outside play.
