take economics. supply/demand.

reduce the demand, and in order to not have surplus waste, they in turn will reduce supply.

kthanks.

i eat plenty of meat but that still is painfully obvious.

Ginger cookies! They were the most dangerous out of all the things I baked over Christmas. I could have eaten the whole batch in one evening.

Mom's Ginger Cookies
1 1/2 cups Earth Balance
2 eggs - used the powdered egg replacer
1/2 C molasses
4 t baking soda
1 t ginger
1 t salt
2 cups sugar
2 t cinnamon
4 cups flour

Cream butter and sugar, add "eggs", molasses and baking soda.
Add dry ingredients.
Chill several hours or overnight.
Make into small balls and roll in sugar.
Place on greased cookie sheets.
Do not pat down.
Bake at 350 for 7 minutes.

attn: vegans

how much do groceries usually cost you a month? i'm going to try veganism again (tried it once while i was living on campus, utter fail) and i'm trying to make sure i can afford to do this healthily.

Around $300 but that's just an estimate because we buy for two people.

hey, i'm on a very low carb diet plan now...but i need my potassium...i bought a large hass avocado...what's the best way to eat/prepare it...would like it to be portable too

You need to cut around the pit in the middle, and remove it. Then scoop out the goodness and discard the skins. There's a bunch of recipes on that website above. Avocados are great on sandwiches but since you're doing a low carb diet i guess that wouldn't work out well...

I spend probably $20-$25 at WF each week. It'll go up if I'm planning a weekend with leftyisreal or my folks.

literally, i ate the fresh fruit and veggies they had, salads, carrot sticks, and celery. it didn't last long.

i currently spend ~$220-230/month on myself (but i buy all organic) so that makes me more comfortable with trying it out again .

alee, your food always looks delicious. I wish I had your cooking/presentation skills. Consider me green with envy... So I have to ask you: do you have a cheese-like food that you make? I have been craving cheese for weeks (which is normally not the unusual, but lately it has been super-strong) and I cannot seem to quiet it with my usual faux-cheese methods. Any ideas?

My boyfriend has a student here in Japan who is a vegetarian. Japan doesn't know what a vegetarian is so there's pretty much nothing on the market for vegetarians here (snacks/mixes/etc). He's going home next month and wants to get her a vegetarian gift.

What are some good tasting, non-perishable stuff you can recommend? I told him to get her a thing of rice milk because that would blow her mind. "Rice... milk?! WHAT?!" but he wants to get her something else too.

Also, if it's something you cook/prepare, it needs to be something with the recipe on the box. It's been a couple years since I've been in a supermarket in the States so I have no idea what's on the market these days

There is only one kind of premade fake cheese that I am in love with and that's Teese's mozzarella cheese. I have made so many pizzas with it, that it's just getting silly. It actually melts and tastes great.

I haven't made any homemade cheese, but I do have countless friends who have wonderful things to say about the Uncheese cookbook. http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Uncheese-Cookbook-Delicious-Dairy-Free/dp/1570671516/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1234320049&sr=8-1

I finally tried quinoa in the form of http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Quinoa-and-Black-Beans/Detail.aspx

I am a big fan. But the recipe needs some tomatoes to suit my liking better. I topped it with salsa.

http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Cheesy-Quinoa-Pilaf-with-Spinach/Detail.aspx and the green-wa from the last page are next on my list.

^ You've obviously never been to Japan. It's a common misconception that Japan knows what a vegetarian is.

For example, I was buying ingredients to make vegetarian lasagna. I get to the checkout counter and one of my students is the cashier. She asks what I'm making for dinner, and when I tell her she goes, "But don't you need pork?" I feel bad for my vegetarian friends here.

I'm a member of a organic/health/alternative food buying club (https://www.unfi.com/Default.aspx); let me know if you're interested in joining. If can't be til after April, as the guy who runs it is an accountant

If you want, I can try to get an electronic catalog for you. They have lots and lots and lots and lots of things that are gluten-free, vegan, cruelty-free, etc...lots of specialty items, basically.

The downsides? Pickup location is past the 15/501 split, and every other month, you devote ~1-1.5hrs to helping unload the truck, verifying the delivery is correct, and splitting cases.

Here's you...

Here's the point of my question.

We want to get her a gift from America that will make her go, "Wow, this is cool! I wish Japan had something like this!" And since it's Japan, and they don't make food products that cater to vegetarians, there's a lot to choose from in America.

Obviously she cooks for herself, otherwise she'd either not be a vegetarian or she'd be anorexic.

^ lol true, but the misunderstanding is more prevalent here. I think it's mainly that most people here haven't even heard of vegetarianism. Or they think it's something only Buddhist monks do. I figure it's because of how expensive produce is here that it hasn't caught on more as a regular diet.

Yeah, that makes sense.

I really have been trying to think of a good suggestion for you, but everything uniquely vegetarian I can think of is refrigerated. Like Tofurky Italian Sausage. Yum.

Maybe just go look around Whole Foods or Trader Joe's or something. That's the best I can recommend.

Yeah, I really wish I could bring back some fake meat stuff. That would be hilarious to give to someone here. I wonder if I kept it refrigerated until the day of the flight, then kept it next to something cool in my carry-on, if it would still be okay after the 18 hours flight...

probably. that stuff is hermetically sealed. i would recommend freezing it first, maybe. a frozen ice pack beside it would do just fine. the tofurky italian sausages are the best of the bunch, but i dont know how that translates to japanese tastes.

there are lots of weird fake meaty things you can get in chinese groceries here. dried tofu skins, wheat gluten stuff and the like. soy products, wheat gluten and beans were the protein staples of my vegan diet, is that stuff really that hard to get there?

[Edited on March 4, 2009 at 7:16 PM. Reason : freeze it]

You can get the dried tofu skins, or fried tofu blocks, etc, but those don't really look or taste like meat. I've never seen wheat gluten stuff here.

But also remember that China has a large sect of Buddhism that practices a strict vegetarian diet and even more people that adhere to a looser form of vegetarianism, so it would make sense that a Chinese market would have more vegetarian products.

Back to the discussion of whether or not Oreos are vegan (pg 3)...

Quote :
"Ingredients: SUGAR, ENRICHED FLOUR (WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMINE MONONITRATE {VITAMIN B1}, RIBOFLAVIN {VITAMIN B2}, FOLIC ACID), HIGH OLEIC CANOLA OIL AND/OR PALM OIL AND/OR CANOLA OIL, AND/OR SOYBEAN OIL, COCOA (PROCESSED WITH ALKALI), HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP, LEAVENING (BAKING SODA AND/OR CALCIUM PHOSPHATE), CORNSTARCH, SALT, SOY LECITHIN (EMULSIFIER), VANILLIN - AN ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, CHOCOLATE."

http://www.nabiscoworld.com/Brands/ProductInformation.aspx?BrandKey=oreo&Site=1&Product=4400000820

The bag I bought last month said it had calcium phosphate. How do vegans know whether the calcium phosphate is from bone ash or some other source? This would be relevant to 1,000's of foods, so I'm using Oreos only as an example.
