On the sidewalk outside my apartment. It was standing beside another dead baby bird that had gotten smashed. It looked lost and scared and probably will die on it's on.

I paused, contemplated it's fate, then got in my car to go to work.

Nature is grim sometimes. A couple months back I saw a dead female cardinal outside Daniels hall, and a male cardinal, presumably its mate, was hopping around it, prodding it with its beak, seeming to be saying "please get up..." It was really quite sad.

Yeah, it definitely was a bad way to start the day.

I got to work and while I was eating my 3 egg breakfast in the cafeteria, I even felt guilty for a second.

If you disagree, just watch March of the Penguins.

I feel like a hypocrite.

Baby bird sure to die on its own on the sidewalk = sad

Squirrel torn apart by three red-tailed hawks who swooped out of the parking deck = awesome

I mean, unbelievably awesome

well, respect for the dead implies grief for the death, eg, burial, shrines, etc. i am un-inclined to absolutely believe that any beings other than humans actually grieve for the dead, for now until something happens that changes my mind.

that's stupid. lots of animals grieve for their dead. watch some nature documentaries you neanderthal... but oh wait, if you were a neandearthal, you would see it in real life. so you are just blind.

The baby bird was gone this morning on my way to work. I vowed to throw away the body of its dead sibling that is laying on the edge of the sidewalk.

I am glad the baby bird is gone now.

just the ones you think are cute right?

animals simpy sit there and wonder why they no longer can interact with this thing it could once interact with

^^^why am i a neanderthal, you spouting off third grade insults isnt gonna make "grieving" birds laugh out loud

maybe you should back away from the PETA publications, ive yet to see a documentary that proves animals grieve, no matter how much some british narrator tries to lead you towards believing it

just shut up

This little bird is back in front of my house this morning.

It didn't seem to be able to walk (or want to?) and looks all ruffled and generally shitty, but otherwise ok (no blood and guts).

I disposed of its sibling's body yesterday.

How long before it dies of thirst or hunger?
