the best part about radio is: if you don't like it, you can change the channel

neither o'reilly or limbaugh are idiots. they're actually both pretty intelligent and shrewd. i dont really like either of them, but i can appreciate what they accomplished and why they accomplished it.

I wouldn't call them intelligent, more like 'witty' and able to control conversations.

they use the "I'll just talk louder than you to win the argument" approach

Yeah, ambitious and shrewd, not intelligent. Rush will happily cut a caller off as soon as they begin to make him look bad. Sure, he justifies this as, "I want callers that will make me look good," which is fine, but do you really want to base your world-view on the opinions of a man who is afraid to actually put his ideas to the test? Sure, he talks big about competing in the "arena of ideas" but he is really just the fat guy in the stands telling the team how much they suck.

Bill O'Reilly, on the other hand, resorts to the tried and true tactic used by six year olds everywhere, just be louder than the next guy.

Both fail hard at any real intellectual discourse.

^ I will fully concede some of your points. Rush will cut people off at convenient times for him (however, this is a rarity). However, Rush's show really isn't a dialogue. It's a monologue. And when Rush really takes on an issue, he does it really, really well. His points are often new and poignant and are well thought out and said.

If he weren't powerful, if he didn't have a great following, and if what he said wasn't hollow, the left wouldn't be scared of him. The Fairness Doctrine does more to legitimize Rush than Rush could ever do for himself.

How do you know when he allows no dissent to test his ideas? I'm not denying his right to run his show as he sees fit, but all he does is deliver shallow, poorly thought out, and one sided monologues designed to play to the emotions of his audience. That isn't debate, that is demagoguery.

Not by a long shot, all it does is de-legitimizes the Left's claim to support free speech.

Like I said, he talks big about the arena of ideas, but he refuses to enter the ring.

The Fairness Doctrine's goal is to do one thing: shut Limbaugh down. That's it.

When people say "talk radio" they mean Rush Limbaugh. He created it and he's still, by far, the largest fish in that small pond.

When a piece of legislation is branded about by the Speaker of the House aimed and shutting you up, I think its a pretty fair claim to say that the left is scared of Limbaugh and cannot compete.

Actually, the Fairness Doctrine was introduced in 1949. Rush wasn't even born yet. Yes the re-introduction was due to the left's fear of the increasing presence of the right in the media, but it isn't like they created it out of thin air.

Either way, unless you're trying to argue that opposition to a given viewpoint is tantamount to legitimization, you still don't make the case for Rush being right. In that case, great, we're all legitimate.

I think the large contract is partially due to the likelihood (although obviously not a certainty) that there'll be a Dem in the Oval Office next year. It's no coincidence that Rush reached his peak in the mid 90's.

I just happened upon him on the radio today and tried to listen for a while...

...and holy shit, you've got to be a very sad and angry person to be able to sit there and enjoy listening to him rant and rave for hours. After five minutes I was ready to veer into oncoming traffic and had to turn it off. I tried a little while later and couldn't get through a couple minutes.

And just his voice and the way he talks is seriously annoying.

Cool story, bro.

I listened to him at length today and he has basically laughed the "send her back" chanters off as "just having good fun."

Yeah, that's the part I was listening to (actually, he probably droned on about it for hours).

He was talking about how fun and good-natured the rallies are. And how the left was creating the narrative that Trump is a racist.
