i wouldn't say the whole album is about that (though it certainly gets into those issues). it's broader than that--it's about different aspects of life as a human being. that doesn't really explain it too well, but i'm at a loss for words to describe it any better.

I can't believe I'm the only person who mentioned Dirt by AiC. It's an AWESOME album--definitely in my top 5 favorites ever--and it has a really focused them: half the songs are about heroin use and self loathing...the other half are just about self-loathing.

Dam That River and Rooster are pretty much the only tracks on the album that don't fit the theme (at least as far as I can interpret).

I never really saw Dirt as a concept album. I just lump it in with all the other albums that came out at the time. You know, the albums full of songs that no one can understand, so they interview the band to maybe find out what the hell the song is about only to realize that they really don't know either.

Then again I was never really an AiC fan.

I never thought about Demanufacture being a concept album either. I guess I'll have to go back and listen to it.

Maybe it's my definition of concept album that's off. I always defined it as an album that told a progressive story when the songs were listened to in order. I really didn't consider albums where all the songs are about the same subject or have the same theme, although technically I guess they are.

i dont think it necessarily has to tell a story from start to finish but all the songs do have to stick to a major theme. and usually one that is very specific not just an album whose songs happen to share a similar theme (because tons of artists do this on albums that are not meant to be concept albums)

AiC's lyrics aren't usually like that. most of their songs are pretty easy to "get".

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness - Smashing Pumpkins
Colors - Between the Buried and Me
Crack the Skye - Mastodon
From Mars to Sirius - Gojira
Mechanical Animals - Marilyn Manson

I also like the whole Coheed story

I never really thought of Dirt as a concept album either. Pretty much all AiC songs deal with drugs, self loathing, and death. However, it is one of my favorite albums.

Don't see Tumbleweed Connection listed.

It's one of the best albums period, let alone concept.

1. I really enjoyed reading this thread and have been reminded to re-listen to some albums and inspired to seek out some new ones.

2. I can't get enough of "Andrew in Drag" (magnetic fields).

Extreme - III Sides To Every Story is a pretty cool concept album

Pornograffiti is, on average, an even better album, but not quite as "concepty"...although it arguably qualifies, too
