They've had several of the production staff for interviews on NPR within the past week. A couple days ago it was the director and yesterday was the exec producer, I think. Seems like an interesting show.

I enjoyed it, but had a hard time following the whose who because they refer to everyone by their nickname.

On in 20 minutes!

Last week's episode was a little slow (kinda like Jarhead) but I'm betting it will improve

I like it, but in my mind it doesn't compare at all with Over There. Too bad the army or whatever put pressure on FX to drop the show.

GK is pretty good, I think the dialog is strong. Hopefully it picks up a little bit, i was getting a little bored.

i love it. the writing is an excellent reflection of the shit that goes on in the military. and it's very similar to stories i hear from buddies who were in country for the invasion.

i don't like that they make so many of the officers out to be retarded. sure there are some, but marines tend to have less of the fucktarded officers than other branches

they're not making the officers out to be retards to prove any sort of point they're just conveying the story as evan wright wrote it, it just so happens he was embedded in a platoon that wasn't too fond of some of their officers......several of the main characters in the show were demoted or reprimanded in real life for the stuff they said about their officers after the article came out in rolling stone

I wish HBO would get on the ball with putting the new episodes On Demand. Last time I checked, they only had the first episode on.

I know as of two days ago the first and second episodes were on demand, probably longer than that, so you must not have checked very recently

I guess I stopped looking on Thursday, because it was there today. I got spoiled by HBO putting some of their more recent work on demand before it was available for regular airtime.

I just got finished watching the second episode and was impressed with it.

you think we'll see anyone die in this series? or would that be considered horrible by all the pro war uber patriots? I know its based on real people, but fuck if i'm not ready to see trombley and captain america take a couple AK rounds in the dome piece.

^^ considering that this is about the 2003 invasion where we lost hardly anyone, i'd say it's highly unlikely, and given who is in charge of the show, you wont get the gratification of seeing the characters you don't like get their "comeuppance" as you imply you desire.

This is definitely one of those shows where you should watch each episode a couple of times.

As someone with virtually no ties to the military, I think the show rocks!

I was talking about this show with some friends at work and of course someone had to chime in how they "don't like TV shows that glorify murder". isn't big enough to express my thoughts on such a statement.

I ran into a buddy of mine last night who was in the Marines for years before losing about half of his hearing to an IED. It turns out that he was in the same unit and knew about half of the guys in Generation Kill. He had some stories about Colbert.

He said that the guy playing the master sergeant who got on everyone about grooming standards is the most spot-on portrayal they have.

just got back from a 2 week trip to ecuador...read the book during down time in the galapagos and thought it was fantastic

after reading the book, i now understand why the officers are such dumb shits for the most part...they're usually REMF's who are out in the fight

He said that he knew Colbert pretty well. He told me that the guy had long blonde hair and was all about fancy gear, like big stupid watches and shit like that. One of the guys who was actually there is in the miniseries playing a different character.

But yeah, he knew Godfather, Captain America, the company commander and most of the officers. I knew that he had some cool Iraq stories from the battle for Falluja and stuff like that, but I never knew that he was a recon marine until last night.

If you have HBO on demand there are several little 6-7 minute segments about each guy that's featured in the show and a couple of them have interviews with the real guys, Brad Colbert's being one of them that has an interview with the real Brad Colbert

Also, the guy who was actually there is Rudy Reyes, he's not playing a different character he's playing himself

did any of you catch it last Sunday? at the end, when the credits where rolling, you where able to listen to the rolling stone guy interview Chaffin and Espera (i only know the names b/c i looked them up, but the redneck guy always spewing racist remarks and the mexican guy always talking about thinking like a white guy, respectively). anyway, he's going on and on about ppl not understanding what it's like, or understanding who they are and he gives a shout out to where he's from. he said something like, “i'm just a white boy from St. Tammany Parish”, and i was like, holy shit! that's where i'm from.

just thought i would let everyone know how suprised i was to hear that. small world.

I haven't read the book, but from watching the show the point is not that all the officers are retarded but that
Quote :
"A command hierarchy where the people who understand the problems the best (the cops on the street, the Marines on the ground) have the least authority, while the people making the decisions are far removed from the action, and whose orders therefore bear little resemblance to the realities their men are faced with when carrying them out."

yes I went to USNA - what does that have to do with anything? am i supposed to be immune to the REMFs that fuck shit up for the guys in the field?

as the lead officer for a rapid deployment anti-terrorism/force protection detachment, I constantly had to fight with squadron ops/intel/supply/etc when I was in the field for missions...i shudder to think how bad it would have been had the squadron support staff officers were out in the field with us

no, of course not...but you should know better than to say "most officers are pogues who stay back inside the wire, letting their troops face all the combat, and then therefore having little to no idea what's going on."

it was more like me saying "the officers in Generation Kill generally do not operate in the field as force recon is based around small teams of marines acting alone. however, in the case of this book/mini-series, the way in which the force recon marines were used caused officers that are generally not involved in combat to be on the front line. this disconnect in doctrines caused a situation in which officers who were not prepared for combat continually fucked up"

Fucking lame if it is. A lot of the episodes were really slow and uneventful. Some were really good though
