So when will laptops with static memory be out (in the mainstream)? I have a 4 year old laptop and it has become very slow, so I want to get a new one. I am just thinking if I should wait for a year or two and get one with static memory if they will be out that soon.

But I don't want just 40 or 60 GB, but at least 80 GB, preferably 100-120 GB.

Any insiders here?

What I would really like to see is SSDs on a slim pc or laptop, which are removable/swappable. So, I can give my wife one, kids one(when they grow up), and a couple for me which run different Operating systems.

I would also be sweet if they could work on any hardware system in the world, so I could just carry it with me and throw it in some maching at work, or at the airport, ect, and have my own computer boot up.

yeah, that would be a departure from how OSs are now and i dont think that its particularly viable

^^ supposedly the next Windows is going to start moving down that path. but instead of swapping out hard drives, your data will be in the cloud.

I'm working on that sir and it's very doable. I'd say by the end of the year, patents will be in place so I could talk all about it on here.

laptops with SSD drives are already in the mainstream, you just have to write a check.

you can get a dell with a 128gb SSD drive and an LED backlit screen. the drive itself is $500 though.

so far only the samsung drives are fast. OCZ has a new Core V2 drive that is 250GB, but it's slower.

they are, just unscrew the HD cover. if you mean HOT swappable, that's coming. hp has had that in their media drives for a while.

sorry i meant solid state, not static.

so these lenovos and dells, how much do they cost? yeah i know, i can look it up, but just wondering if anybody knows right off the bat.

but at the same time, that's what i meant by mainstream. if they are too expensive, they aren't in the mainstream. how long would it take for prices to come down to today's laptops? (or just 10-20% more)

no, but the DELL name drop tells you to go to dell.com.

Cheap dells are averaging 500, plus a 500 dollar drive puts you at 1000 for a computer that is low range in terms of speed, memory, and other features.

Is it worth it now? no.
Will prices fall and more options become 'mainstream' in a year or two? yes.

^^jesus christ you're dense, take the current cost of any laptop and add ~$500 to it. we're not your personal google/dell/hp/bestbut/circuitcity/apple search engine

jesus christ people, if you don't know off the top of your head, don't give a bullshit answer.

Since lenovo and dell aren't offering a 128 ssd in just any of their laptops, you can't just add $500 to that price of the dell you saw last friday at best buy.

0EPII1: The cheapest dell you can get with a 128 is $1400, before tax. Lenovo is only offering 64gb for about the same price.

^Agreed.

Umm yeah you can, since the drive itself sells for $500 bucks... the implication is you can buy the drive and put it in pretty much any laptop. Restore discs would be a must for this obviously since you'd have to reload the OS, but you'll avoid paying the manufacturers insane premium on the part upgrade. You'll also not be forced into the expensive models that they are typically offered in.

Jesus Christ people (really just ^^), if you're going to talk out of your n00b asses try not to be so fucking condescending about it.

sorry i should have been clearer, i have that problem sometimes. my apologies.

my new laptop has a space for two HD's, so one is a 128GB SSD drive and the other a 250GB SATA conventional drive.

The samsung drive is QUICK. Firefox pops up in a sec. Vista 32bit boots up much faster. Photoshop crazy fast. I love new technology. Though now I'm relegated to using regular gas and eating ramen noodles at least I can write it off .

$475 for 128GB. pretty sure you could just add it to any dell you saw at Best Buy last Friday

Remember that, even more than with HDD's, all SSD's are not created equal. They range from MUCH WORSE than decent hard drives to insanely better.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-hard-drive,1968.html

The OCZ drive examined here is pretty fucking crazy.

^Might just be familiar with how aggressively apple blames 3rd party parts for any and all problems when you try to get warranty support?

thanks to all those who have been helpful and not insulting.

i think i will stick it out for a year with my current laptop even though the response time for opening applications and documents has gone to shit (upto 30 sec or maybe more sometimes).

there is actually a selection of 1.8" SSD in EIDE, i have been trying to find a larger 1.8" disk so i can dual boot red hat and windows xp

if there is a 64 GB 1.8", i think i know what my next purchase is going to be

no...i just frown at the current hard drive sizes. Right now i have a 200gb hard drive in my macbook pro and 70gb are being used. This doesn't include a windows partition or my music/video collection that i like to travel with usually.

and more importantly...

its not worth the $$$ to take a chance like that.

^not if the 250gb drive costs more than my laptop. if 128gb is $500 i can't imagine how much a 250gb one is going to cost.

and i didn't see one on new egg so it can't be very mainstream.

i can also say out of the 3 apple laptops i've owned..i've never once had a hardware problem. unless you count the power adapter catching on fire.
