Pau Gasol is playing tougher / more physical this year...if him, Kobe and Bynum stay healthy, I say Lakers over Cavs in 5

I still say Boston will win the east even though they're in a little slump right now. Boston is basically the same team as last year except Rondo is much better.

Posey meant a lot to the Celtics.

If you look at the top 3 teams compared to last year you get this:

Celtics: lost Posey (downgrade)

Lakers: lost Turiaf, added Bynum (upgrade)

Cavs: added Mo (BIG upgrade)

I like lakers vs Cavs in the finals

I think it’s the most shocking celebrity death of my life

it’s fucking awful

^ definitely one of those “i remember where I was when” type deaths. Even my mom who I figured didn’t give a shit, text “sucks about kobe”

Seriously does suck

I got a random text message while I was out yesterday afternoon from someone I never hear from that just said "damn Kobe", then looked at my twitter and saw a lot of people saying stuff like "is this Kobe news true", and I still didn't think the news I was going to eventually see was that he died. RIP.

unbelievably sad. was really looking forward to his post player career.

I don't want this to become a comparison thread of the impact of celebrity death but this one was up there near the top. He seemed invincible.

I turned on my TV yesterday afternoon and prepared to watch Pro Bowl on ABC, then it was the breaking news instead of pre-game show. I suddenly felt it was unreal.

The Aaliyah and Dale Earnhardt deaths rank pretty high for most shocking and awful (in my lifetime). But, not gonna lie, this one may just be worse than those.......I'm older and absorb the grief and pain more. Kobe just seemed untouchable, invincible. I really wanted to see what he would do for the world and for the game of bball in his post-career life. Also, really was excited to see Gianna mature and transform the world of women's basketball. So so so sad.

Dale Earnhardt one is a good comparison...especially for the shock factor and not expecting it. This one is 10x worse in that it involved his 13 year old daughter, 2 other 13 year old kids, a mother/father/daughter combo(with 2 other kids left without a family now), a mother who leaves behind a husband and multiple kids..........just....fuck man. I still can't get over it. First time a death outside of my family or a close friend has left me in a daze for multiple days. I still just feel different. And everytime I look at my 3 year old daughter, I think about me and her being in that kind of a situation and just how fucking terrible it is. I just...I dunno. It sucks. I hate it with my entire being.

As for the person who said they were looking forward to post-basketball Kobe....i was too. Dude was doing things and he was just getting started.

I’ve cried 3 times tonight just thinking about it. So damn tragic. I keep thinking “i hated that guy, but I should have been able to hate him for 35-40 more years”. And I realize I didn’t hate him that much. Closest I can think of as far as sudden deaths go is Michael Jackson, and I personally didn’t feel a 10th of the grief I feel now, and it wasn’t really all of that sudden like this. RIP Mamba

He has a tremendous impact in Asia, specifically China. Fans treat him like God. Yao, Sun and Lin respect him. He is more favorable than Jordan or Marbury. Honestly I don’t know why.

IDK Dale Earnhardt was more traumatic to me because he died on live TV during a race.

I don’t think this one could ever reach the level of Michael Jackson’s death. Man, MJ is a truely global icon.

This guy is such an inspiration and motivation to the Chinese fans that many still can't accept the truth that he already passed away several days ago and still hope he survived with his girl.

I'm afraid some may lose the confidence and belief to live another day and commit suicide. I'm really scared.

one of the first things I thought of after the news was Earnhardt, but that wasn’t quite as shocking for me since he died while in the middle of something that was very dangerous

it was much easier to wrap my head around that as it’s kind of the deal drivers make with themselves. they are very aware of what could happen while on the track.

Man, this whole situation has got me all messed up still. Having two daughters this hurts from several levels - dying with a kid, leaving three behind with a wife, ugh.

I just can't help but think about what he was saying to his daughter at the end. And this is all on top of him being one of my favorite athletes ever and how much of a tragedy it is for the sport

They said the plane plummeted (probably rotors first) about 500 feet in less than 15 seconds. Also said they may not have known anything was wrong until the last few. I just can't take it.......so so so heart-breaking. I tear up just thinking about it. I don't have kids but I can't even imagine the fear running through each of them. To know you are going to lose your daughter/spouse/coach, etc. Goodness.........

Owen Hart dying in the middle of a pay-per-view, and then they kept doing the pay-per-view, with some wrestlers coming out of the back crying, was worse for me.

But this one's still pretty bad.

it's a shame they didn't have Lavar Ball there at Staples Center to rip the mic from Lebron's hand and talk about how he would never lose to Kobe in 1 on 1

[Edited on January 31, 2020 at 10:59 PM. Reason : wonder if Lebron goes for 24 assists]

This really didn't affect me emotionally at all. How concerned should I be? Am I a closet sociopath?

As info, I have no interest in the Kobe, the Lakers, the NBA, basketball, or sports in general. Rich people doing rich people things. Doesn't affect my life.

This is my most enduring image of Kobe:
