Quote : | "The story of Jamal Malik (Patel), an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India's "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?" But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika (Pinto), the girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show's questions. Each chapter of Jamal's increasingly layered story reveals where he learned the answers to the show's seemingly impossible quizzes. But one question remains a mystery: what is this young man with no apparent desire for riches really doing on the game show? When the new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the Inspector and sixty million viewers are about to find out. At the heart of its exuberant storytelling lies the intriguing question of how anyone comes to know the things they know about life and love." |
This movie has been getting some incredible buzz and has been winning some of the early awards for Best Film of 2008. It's directed by Danny Boyle of Trainspotting and 28 Days Later fame.

great flick! Saw it last night and was totally enamored. Highly recommended to anyone that enjoys a well-done movie and story.
(as a side note, Crossroads 20 felt compelled to show the trailer for The Wrestler twice. While that was appreciated, they didn't need to bother. I already want to see the flick. Seeing the trailer twice just reminded me twice.) 12/23/2008 1:25:41 AM |

I saw this movie last week. It was OK I guess. It wasn't great by any means. I kind of feel like it is one of those movies that people say they like just so they seem "theatrically cultured." 1/5/2009 12:03:34 PM |

^^I don't really follow that. It's not really an artsy movie. Do you think people will think they're cultured because it's based on people from India instead of the US? 1/5/2009 1:56:03 PM |

I really dunno. I mean, can you honestly tell me that movie was really that good? I am not saying it is BAD, I am simply saying that it is just an average movie. But it is kinda... I dunno, different than what you normally see. I am not a big Indian movie watcher or anything, but most movies that I watch don't flow like that at all. 1/5/2009 8:59:14 PM |

i wouldnt say its in the style of bollywood movies. yes its set in india, and yes deals with indian culture. but the movie is directed by the director of Trainspotting 1/6/2009 11:23:51 AM |

This is not a stereotypical Bollywood film although there is a dance sequence during the credits. Also, Loveleen Tandan co-directed the film with Danny.
From wiki:
Quote : | "In addition to Swarup's original novel Q and A, Boyle has stated that the film was also directly inspired by the following three Bollywood films set in Mumbai: Ram Gopal Verma's Satya (1998) and Company (2002), and Anurag Kashyap's Black Friday (2004). Satya and Company, based on the D-Company, both gave "slick, often mesmerizing portrayals of the Mumbai underworld", while the screenplay for Satya was also co-written by Saurabh Shukla, who plays the role of Constable Srinivas in Slumdog Millionaire. Black Friday, based on the 1993 Bombay bombings, featured a "12-minute police chase through the crowded Dharavi slum" that was mimicked in the opening scene of Slumdog Millionaire. Another influence cited by Boyle is Deewaar (1975), which he described as being “absolutely key to Indian cinema.” The film was based on the Bombay gangster Haji Mastan, portrayed by Amitabh Bachchan, the Bollywood movie star featured in Slumdog Millionaire and the original presenter for Kaun Banega Crorepati, the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" |

I will agree with the good, but not great sentiment. I didn't dislike this movie at all, but I really didn't see what all the big fuss was about. It was a good story and entertaining enough for a couple of hours and that's all I got from it. 1/16/2009 5:12:27 PM |

because the dark knight was much more than a comic book movie, but this wasn't much more than a love story.
