The terrorists win when we can't scream random words during the anthem.

I also burn a miniature american flag and stomp on the bible during the national anthem.

P.S. I love the "zomg, you don't care about the US" reactions. Give me a break.

^^ and ^, once again, no one said anything close to that... its not a question of if YOU want to do it or not, just if you have the common courtesy to be quiet for a minute and a half. Its pretty easy to do.

I will respectfully say no. If you don't like it stay home, or cover your ears, or just scream all the lyrics at the top of your lungs (this = REALLY BIG PATRIOTISM btw). Do whatever the fuck you want and I will do what I want.

What offends me is that we don't have an opening prayer.

What would REALLY offend me is a WOLF - PACK chant during that opening prayer.

There are more important things to worry about than changing the last word of our national anthem to symbolize who we are as a collective group rather than who we are as citizens of the same nation.

Oh, I also wanted to add that while I don't mind other people doing it, I don't do it myself because I think it's kinda gay.

Then again, I'm usually the one of the few saying "Go to hell Carolina" during sparsely attended games, so to each his own.

jaybee and panthro obviously feel they have some special patriotic obligation because their daddies lived in a fucking hole for 2 years and saw their buddies faces blown off in combat, fighting a war they weren't sure why they were fighting.

If you're that patriotic, join the fucking army yourselves.

otherwise, shut the fuck up and get lost in the flood like everyone else.

yeah seriously

it's not like we're changing the words to the entire song or chanting go to hell carolina the entire time. We're actually listening and following along with words until yelling "red," which is actually one of the lyrics... and then yelling "Wolfpack" at the end, where everybody is clapping and done being quiet and "respectful" anyways

for the 3rd or 4th time, has nothing to do with me being patriotic or not, just me being able to shut up for a minute and a half, I dont think my quality of life or independence has been hurt at all by a minute and a half for something that a lot of other people feel is important. Like I said, put me in Saudi Arabia and I would do the same thing for them

^ no one said that either

I have been places where they had a moment of silence for someone that I did not know at all, zero connection to them, and I didnt yell or talk in the middle of it just to prove that "I dont have to do your shit, I'm my own man! rawr!", I just shut up for a bit

The big problem is that just like this message board, the majority of the people at the game are a bunch of college kids who are finally away from mommy and daddy, and feel they have the need to defy every law, rule, or tradition that they can get away with. I too, used to be the same way with things just like the National Anthem (I used to play taps on my trombone in high school after we lost a football game... a real dickhead thing to do looking back).

It's a real shame that some of the people on here have the audacity to talk shit about your dad, or anyone who served in Viet Nam. Obvously they would never do this to his or your face (regardless of whether they say they will or not). They're just immature kids though, and they really don't understand what their doing or saying. Odds are most of them will grow out of this little phase they are in and will look back and say, "Man I was kind of a douchebag." Unfortunately the tradition will probably never stop. Regardless of what your dad did in Viet Nam, you should be proud of him. I definitely appreciate all that he did.

Members of the armed forces are fighting for my right to yell the word RED louder than any other word in the anthem.

Furthermore, they are fighting for my right to say whatever the hell I want to during the national anthem.

^^^^^No. And I ain't just talkin bout his spelling. I mean, "feel they have the need to" isn't exactly eloquent. Furthermore, very few people actually say "mommy" or "daddy" once they finish elementary. Relying on these words to mock people's maturity levels is...immature.

Also, to the folks who really care about the anthem, why do you care about it? Do you carry yourself with reverence for other shit? Seriously, what else do you guys respect? What do you respect and revere so much that you can confidently criticize others for not giving two shits about altering the anthem? (I'm getting the Thesaurus.) Since when could any of you be described as respectful, humble, dutiful, reverential, gracious, polite, solemn? Are those words even American?

just something I learned from my parents, you treat it with respect, take your hat off and shut up, and its definitely not something you use as a cheer for your team, its above mere sport. It would be like the person giving the prayer before kick off saying "and god gives us the strength to kick their ass!"

I wonder why no one is offended that only 1/4 of the Star Spangled Banner is actually sung

Quote :
"Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!"

Most people who do it either have never had to make a sacrifice for their country, or don't know someone who has. It seems more like a HS level thing to do than college. It's more immature than disrespectful to me.

This is ridiculous. It is a fucking song it may mean something to you it may mean something completely different to me. Quit worrying what everyone else is doing and do what you think is right. I don't give a fuck if you think it is rude because I think your pretentious whining about having family who fought in the war is rude. I too have family who fought in wars and guess what so does everybody else.

"its "above" the game... it would be like cheering during the opening prayer"

EXACTLY. The anthem is bigger than the game. It's like a single player putting on his jersey for a game, and looking at the name of the school on his jersey and thinking, "I am just one player in an entire history of this school. This is not about me - this is about the pride of NC State - past, present, and future."

The anthem is a time for everyone in the building to set aside their allegiances to their schools and to come together as one nation. That's the whole reason why players shake hands before the game and wish each other luck - out of sportsmanship.

Quote :
"I have the freedom to yell RED and WOLFPACK during the national anthem. Trying to stop me from yelling such b/c you think it's disrespectful goes against what this country is all about"

I see what you're saying, and I will be a wolfpack fan with you for the rest of my life. But the other schools are US citizens too. To be able to set that wolfpack pride aside for just 1 minute in order to acknowledge our country's freedom shows much more competence and knowledge. When I hear "RED" and "HOME OF THE WOLFPACK" at games, I feel like I hear South Carolina before the Civil War, trying to break away from the rest of the country.

How about, there would be no NC State if there wasn't an America first. Now what do you have?

That's the epitomy of the selfish new-age "all about me" bullshit that is being mainstreamed into society nowadays. Maybe you should reference General Douglas McArthur and ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.

You can go to the game and root for your team because of the sacrifices that people have made for our country. If you can't take a 2 min's out to honor that....then there is nothing else I can say to you
