im pissed
i would have owed $95 for federal and $0 for state (ga)
thats damn near perfect; however, i get the $600 economic stimulus check this time around as well as a $240 lifelong education credit so i have about $750 coming to me
if i would have known about both of those i would have altered my withholdings 1/22/2009 10:21:53 AM |

you can get it next year. it goes through July. I even think there is a provision that you can have it moved up to this year...check the wikipedia article on first time homebuyers credit. I read something about it being moved up to this years return if you havnt filed yet.1/22/2009 11:02:46 AM |

so that credit essentially wipes out any capital you had to pull away for closing costs/fees and then some. impressive.

I wish full time students got a tax break . I think I paid around 6k in taxes last year, that I could have really used for living expenses and tuition. 1/22/2009 11:16:00 AM |

My closing costs were only $2,300. I had an FHA loan. So basically I am replacing that, paying off credit card debt, and still putting over 1,000 in the bank.
And as for the guy who closed before April 9th, sorry. I thought you meant you closed 1-week into the new year. But if you closed early, youre basically screwed.1/22/2009 2:22:35 PM |

Do you work, and if so, how much are you pulling in? What was your financial aid package (if any) like? I'm assuming that if you were wanting that 6K for living expenses, you don't have sizable investments.1/22/2009 4:07:59 PM |

about the only thing good about paying out the ass in school loans right now is that most of the payment is interest that I can claim on my return, bumps it up a good bit.

yep, tax it when your daddy earns the money, tax it when he buys the house, tax it every year, then tax it when he gives it to you1/23/2009 8:55:09 AM |

^Yea it's also good to double check the numbers. On one of my wife's w2, her Fed. Income withholding was $1, but her paystub said otherwise.

Quote : | "Does the credit have to be paid back to the government? If so, what are the payback provisions? Yes, the tax credit must be repaid. Home buyers will be required to repay the credit to the government, without interest, over 15 years or when they sell the house, if there is sufficient capital gain from the sale. For example, a home buyer claiming a $7,500 credit would repay the credit at $500 per year. The home owner does not have to begin making repayments on the credit until two years after the credit is claimed. So if the tax credit is claimed on the 2008 tax return, a $500 payment is not due until the 2010 tax return is filed. If the home owner sold the home, then the remaining credit amount would be due from the profit on the home sale. If there was insufficient profit, then the remaining credit payback would be forgiven.
