Tell me about them. I keep wanting one for some reason. How reliable are they, do rotors really only cost $2x.xx?

i've got a c5 and a c4 and my dad has a c5 as well. plus a c1, two c3's, and another c4 have been in the family in the past. what are you wanting to know? it seems to me by other posts you've made about them that you're well aware of their capabilities of being reliable, cheap to own, and go fast on a budget. (c5/c6). i'll be happy to answer any other specific questions you've got though...

i could waste my time timing out a bunch of stuff, but it would be a lot easier for you to go over to http://www.corvetteforum.com . there is TONS of info in the c5 section about common issues right down to the silliest/simplest things that most people overlook, what to look for when buying, etc. you have to weed through a large group of mid life crisis having purist idiots sometimes, but for the most part it's a great resource.

the only thing i'll mention here is wiring gremlins. BIG problem on c5's, especially early ones that have lived life outside. corrosion on the chassis grounds and pcm causes one to set off all sorts of random dtc's for things that are in reality just fine. that's probably the number one thing to look for, any other common issues are minor. the good news is it's not terrible difficult to fix them and could get you a car at a steal if it's currently throwing any codes. learn the procedure to access the dtc's before you go look at the vehicle. that and diagrams to locate the chassis grounds are all over corvetteforum.

if you've got any specific questions about anything, shoot and i'll answer if i can.

[Edited on April 14, 2009 at 7:00 PM. Reason : oh, and yes that's a very good deal if it doesn't have any hidden issues.]

That M3 is cool, but I need something that performs a bit better. Well, I really just need a change. I've seen several z06's pop up around 20k, that seems to be an appealing option.

I guess I do know what I need to know about them for the most part. I just want to own and play with one. Familiar with any oiling issues or the like, other comments, should I pick one up?

I think at least currently it would an addition, and not a replacement, but who knows. I want something I wouldn't feel so bad about parking downtown and driving to the worse parts of town and parking near a bike trail, etc.

the only real oiling issue (more sensory really) is the sending units fail early. to complicate things, there's no decent gm/delco replacement available and the aftermarket stuff is junk. if that wasn't enough, it's also damn near impossible to change. you have to either cut a small hole in the cowl above it (not visible, trim covers it) or do it the "right" way and remove the intake manifold. it's been figured out how to adapt a buick sensor though. you can also relocate it to an extra boss on the front driver side of the block which makes changing it in the future a breeze.

as for actual mechanical oiling issues, there's really not any. the stock ls1 pump isn't up to the task of lots more power/rpm's so you hear about them failing occasionally or the check hanging up, but a ported ls6 unit is cheap and will about do whatever you want.

lastly, many c5's have somewhat high oil consumption rates, especially in the early years. this is due to a subpar pcv system that was later revised. burning a quart or even a little more isn't uncommon on some.

sending unit failed on mine

everything i've read says the replacements usually fail from ppl over tightening them. not sure how that matters to the degree ppl claim but that's what i read.

i had a ton of wiring gremlins in mine too. i never bothered fixing them and just had as many as the systems turned off as i could. was a lot easier that way

I've called on the silver one, there's several things wrong with it, including intermittent windows, and bad sending unit. How much would I pay to have somebody do this job, anybody know? So far not so bad.

I'm thinking a z06 may be worth it... Any issues to check on a 97, GIVE ME MORE INPUT!111.

I don't know, still love the 911, but parts prices, etc. lean heavily in the favor of a C5, even if as a second/back up car. I don't foresee missing a track day b/c somebody didn't have a part in stock with a vette...

Quinn, I told you about the stocks I was buying and how I handled my $$. Feel free to PM me if you're curious. xoxo

windows is almost certainly a simple wiring issue. the wires that pass through the accordian tube things are known to rub on the sill enough to cause a short. it can also cause locks to go haywire, illumination, trunk release, and several other things. there's also a chance of it being one of the (8?) chassis grounds, namely ones that the bcm feeds to.

oil pressure sending unit i've already covered above on your options to repair and relocate. the hole in the cowl method might take an hour of labor. anyone that can change their oil could easily do it in a parking lot/driveway. the "proper" way of pulling the intake manifold would probably run 2-3 hours of labor. that's something you may or may not be able to handle on your own depending on skill level. there's also the option of just leaving the old unit as a plug and relocating the new one, but the problem with that is many of the failed senders seep oil past the circuit board (what fries them in the first place). finally, you could always use pulling the intake to replace the sender as an excuse to go ahead and throw a nice h/c/i package on.

if you do get one and want to have a local shop work on it, we're lucky enough to have two of the top places in the country here that specialize in lsx's. they are mayhem motorsports and r.p.m.

my dad had several c3's and two c4's in various states of disarray. pretty sure most of them could be restored, but i honestly have no idea how much work it would take. i'd like to fix one of the c4's and a particular c3, and my mom wants to keep the c3 that they drove away in on their wedding day, but if anyone is interested in a project car she'd probably sell you one, haha

I... eh. I test drove the silver car, as well as a z06. The z06 is a tighter package. They're both powerful, a magnificent engine. I like the engine tone as well. Shifter's better than I remember, but after driving the 996 and an S2k, just doesn't compare that well. Same can be said for most of the rest of the car, but oh my the interior and overall quality of the car's really lacking. I keep telling myself these are superficial things, and that it's the performance of the car that really matters, but it just doesn't seem like a terribly high quality machine, and that bothers me a little. I'm perplexed. They do seem to have a decent amount of grip, but I'm not wowed by it overall. I'll probably make him an offer, just because I feel like any self respecting enthusiast should at some point own a corvette...

did you happen to find out if the 97 is a z51 or not? fx4 (adjustable suspension)? that could account for the noticeable difference in feel between the zo6 if it didn't have one of those options.

you pretty much nailed it, you're not going to get the build quality and overall fit and finish of a german car with a vette. it's going to shine in performance, not luxury. it's just a simple, no nonsense american sports car that gets the job done.

i'm surprised you're not more critical of the shifter. imo, that's about the worst thing about a stock c5. it's like a damn truck. thankfully, it's easily remedied with any number of aftermarket shifters and linkages.

yea they're awful stock. hell, i just chopped mine down a few inches with a saw and re-threaded the end. worked a lot better than the stock one as far as not feeling like a damn truck.

Dudes, I come from old Porsches, that were both vague, AND had a lot of slop, not to mention if you didn't give the transmission some time, it just flat wouldn't go into gear. You actually had to double clutch for a 5th to 2nd downshift for example. And even with a double clutch, going back into first while the car was moving was dodgy at best.

Coming from that, the e36 M3 shifter was pure bliss to me. It was short throws, smooth, and it went into gear whenever. I don't like e46 shifters however, they feel too rubbery to me. Anyway, then I spent some time with the WRX which had the worst shifter of a modern car I've driven. Compared to those the C5 is just fine. Long throws, a bit of effort, sure but overall a step up for sure. It's not as bad as I remember, I drove a few around last year, and seem to recall the effort being much higher. Perhaps it was because I had a shoulder/neck injury at the time I suppose. I'm not praising it's shifter, but it's livable I think.

To each his own, I like the 996's better. Cable actuated also means (when properly executed) that the shifter orientation is isolated from the movement of the transmission/engine assembly relative to the chassis. This is absent on your S2000, which sure does feel pretty good, but just because it's low effort and precise doesn't mean... wait yeah it's pretty good.

Not a fair comparison though, b/c the S2000 makes about 1/3rd the torque of a Corvette. You need rather beefcake gears and selector forks and the like when you actually have torque. Another reason big hp w/relatively little torque is nice in sports cars, drivetrain components can be a lot lighter.

speaking of vettes...just drove friends '03 C5 Z06...in yellow. only 22k. really impressed with the shifter and power is out of this world. really addictive. interior is not as bad as i thought, but visibility/blind spo is crap. i have no clue where the car corners are.

still...love the car!
