^yep. I use Bing for cashback and travel. It's one of the best aggregators (other than farecompare) to be able to look at all flights FROM one place. All the major travel sites require you to pick destination and origin to look for deals, which is a pain in the ass for me.

Too bad they don't push the travel stuff more prominently in the navigation, it's one of the best features on bing (and way way more useful than their maps)

News search has steadily improved over the past month too. I accidentally did a current event search on bing today (mean't to be on google) and it came back with exactly what I was looking for. Needless to say I was pretty suprised.

Also, image search is 100000000 times better on Chrome, which I finally tried out at home. IE8 is such garbage

From page 1

Quote :
"^let's be real here, that's simply not true.

Searching for window and getting windows results is entirely different from searching for "the best search engine" and getting bing (btw, both google and bing return almost the same results for that query).

If you want a little reverse bitching, try searching for "documents" on both engines. Google Docs show's up #1 on google, #2 on bing

Or mail: gmail is #1 on google, mail.com is #1 on bing.

A lot of this isn't corporate favoritism, a lot of it is the queries of users, which absolutely effect index results. Who on bing is going to be searching for mail and looking for gmail? Very likely they will be using google.com to look for that google service.

So lets use a LITTLE common sense here. That said, there's some good examples in here of Microsoft (in my personal opinion) needing to re-center their results on some common queries."

i really just don't trust microsoft. all the faith i have in google scares me sometimes, but i will never have faith in M$. i still really don't like that you're forced to have background images and whatnot.

Noen makes a good point about user query impact on the results... remember that most of the MS campus have been using kumo/bing for awhile for testing purposes so their results are going to be very Microsoft centered.

Besides, if Bing returned exactly the same results as google then there would definitely be no point in using it. A different perspective in a different format is very refreshing.

Still using both. Bing has lately been delivering MUCH better results than Google.

Mostly the difference has been that Bing cuts out the 20+% of spam results that always seem to permeate google. And the news search has improved, but still not anywhere near google's.

You don't trust an international corporation because a search engine has a background image?

And you can turn it off. http://www.bing.com/?rb=0

Seriously, fine if you don't like Microsoft, or whatever/whoever else. But don't be ignorant about it.

^^ I was look for code and reference samples for the DSL platform in Visual Studio.

Putting DSL into google (even with a lot of modifiers: geometry, gradients, fills, shapes etc) yields a lot of not-very-safe-for-work results, and quite a bit of general spam results.

Generally I'd fine 2-3 valid hits on Bing, and 1-2 on Google.

i just searched google for "visual studio dsl" and didn't get any nsfw sites. i got things like msdn, channel9, informit, amazon, codeproject and a couple other sites geared specifically to DSLs.

if you searched google for just dsl, then yeah given that context, probably the most relevant results would be adult-oriented.

noen, your reading comprehension skills aren't so great. i didn't say i didn't trust them BECAUSE they have a background image. i said i didn't trust them. i also said i didn't like having a background image. two separate statements. there was a period at the end of those sentences.

it doesn't matter anyway. i had no idea there were so many microsoft fanbois here. i'm surprised.

I posted the link to turn the backgrounds off. What a completely silly qualm for choosing a search engine.

And so again I ask, what irrational reason do you have not to trust Microsoft? What mistrust is there? Last I checked, they've never lost any customer information due to leaks, and they are HYPER religious about ensuring the anonymity of any feedback and customer participation program data they recieve. It actually sucks sometimes because they are so vigilant about it, that we aren't able to gain nearly as much insight into the data as some of our competitors can who have much looser data collection and privacy policies (*cough* Google *cough* Yahoo)

And who is a Fanboy? I'm talking about real world examples, and facts. You are talking about totally irrational and inconsequential reasoning to avoid Microsoft products.

If you don't like a product, no problem. If there's a better one out there, go for it. But don't play smoke and mirrors. There are plenty of actual reasons not to use Bing, none of which are "because of the background image".

a bad reputation is hard to get rid of

i used to be pretty critical of Microsoft in general, but in the last couple years, they've become a lot more transparent about what they do and why they do it. the number of people they have blogging about very specific, internal decisions is incredible and very admirable. people who are interested in the tech world are going to see that a lot quicker than the average consumer. that said, there are still a lot of things they can be criticized for

Hey Noen, where did that data on Hyper-V market share come from? Did Mr. Turner tell you yet? Has he told anyone yet? Who told him?

Do you think that might be a reason that people don't trust them?

When is the release coming stating Bing! has gained 24 points against a very, very formidable competitor?

Who was passing out these at VMworld last year when I attended?

http://www.ntpro.nl/blog/uploads/full01.jpg

Just ask our customers. Just list them so we can, hahahaha.

Where does http://www.vmwarecostswaytoomuch.com go? Click it.

If you just so happened to be a CIO or any person responsible for researching server or desktop virtualization at (pick your favorite company), would you trust Microsoft? You're a Goober dude. Get a clue.

I just researched further, 32% of my company's revenue last year was directly related to MS products, namely shitty SharePoint and the need for development training.

I take back any posts in this thread, your shitty products keep my wife farting through silk.

PS I won't make a dime off Hyper-V though, hence my bitterness towards your virtualization product. Thanks to VMware, I'll be retiring at 31

I don't have anything to do with Hyper-V. I don't even know who Mr. Turner is. Doesn't really matter much to me. Marketing is ALL bullshit from every company... it's the heart and soul of the profession. I could replace "Hyper-V" and "Mr. Turner" with a hundred other products and it would still hold true.

at the Bing statement. Just another stupid remark.

Like I said, if you want to hate on a company, hate on the product, not the hype.

Quote :

Finally something we can agree on. I hate SharePoint so much. Somehow it makes an insane amount of money and is growing like CRAZY still. It's the bane of my existence. I don't know anyone that has ever used SharePoint that actually enjoys using it. It's getting a LOT better with 2010, but I won't believe it till I see it.

You could though, there's a huge amount of market opportunity to fill in the gaps. And the card you posted is pretty awesome, because it is absolutely true. VMWare makes incredible products, but they are expensive as shit. Microsoft has always been successful as a medium scale platform company (WinServer vs. Unix/mainframe, SQL vs. Oracle, IIS vs. Websphere and Apache), and it seems like virtualization has the same kind of opportunity space. I don't know if Hyper-V will ever rival VMWare for huge enterprise, but the shit I've seen has me sold on it for medium scale and small shops. If anyone ever get's a business viable cloud story, the virtualization space is gonna get reaaallll interesting.

Just realized Microsoft bought farecast.com... so that's why it's so good, not because MS made it though.

I used to use farecast.com all the time back in the day.

i don't. at my work, there's some weird thing where when you try to do anything through google (browse to google.com, run search through chrome URL or through Firefox toolbar etc) there's a 30 second wait...so because of that, I started using Bing for all my searching. I gave up after a few days, because the results Bing returns SUCKS. I'd search for something in Bing, couldn't find what I wanted in the first few pages, then plug the exact same search terms through google and found what I wanted within the first few results. I switched back because it was worth the wait to get accurate results though google vs shit through Bing. It's all about the algorithm baby.

i might try bing to see what alternative results it returns, if google really, really isn't cutting it. but frankly it's easier for me to refine my google search than it is to start over on another engine.

I really wanted to like Bing. I'm a ASP.NET/SQL Server guy, run Microsoft OS's on all my systems, like all the Sliverlight stuff and kinda dug their image search for a while, but google returns MUCH more accurate results, which is what it's all about.

I use both. The results are, (for my searches) damn near identical. Still use Google for anything news/current event related though.

I actually REALLY like the new maps beta overall. It's painfully slow to load, but the "nearby" features and streetview is way better than google maps, which are a large part of why I use google maps today. Google's "local" features never worked very well for me, so Bing wins me over there.

I've been pretty letdown with bing travel though. It was promising when it launched, but they haven't really done anything else to it since... you have to wade through a bunch of inconsistent UI and popups to really look for any fares

maybe it has changed some. When it first came out, I ran a slew of searches on both search engines and Google had my stop in the top 2 suggested links every time and Bing sometimes didn't even have it on the first page.

^It has. A month or so after launch, the search results became almost indistinguishable. Now I very rarely see any difference, even in the ordering. The real advantage is for non-technical things, Bing's categories and added context add a lot that I wouldn't otherwise see.

Just wish they indexed news as well

Not for my uses. The results PALE in comparison to Google. It's not even close. Like I said before I endure the 30 second wait my work imposes on me to get more accurate results. No offense, but their algorithm just isn't there yet.

Quote :

that they do. half the time when I'm slinging something into a search engine I don't spell it right, and google is FAR superior at picking up what I meant to say. That's a reason in of itself to use one search engine over another.
