I'd go to the autox, but I'm driving back from DC that day! Seriously though, let's all find one we can attend (that's not at a shitty location).

Where does the 350z and I assume the convertible 370z when or if its out fit?

a 350z coupe is probably a small increment up the performance ladder, at least as a total package. I think the coupe would probably lag the S2000.

The 370z convertible will probably be a good step ahead of the S2000. Hopefully it isn't as godawful ugly as the 350z ragtop.

S54 : heavily tweaked intake and exhaust, cast iron engine block, no variable lift. 330hp 11.5:1 CR. A rod bearing recall on a high revving engine is scary as hell to me.

LS3/LS6 : GREAT output. Not enough technology. AWESOME engine. I cant say enough about what they have done with what they had. At the end of the day its a 5.7L with 10.5:1 CR making what 400hp? Point is they could easily improve on it. We , the consumer, wouldn't want to pay for it. They pretty much aced their genre. It's just hard to give him the win with the lack of tech. I'm a geek!

M3 V8 : Variable valve lift and variable cam timing. Great design. Unfortunately it doesn't get the worthless Quinn award because well it isnt cheap to produce. It isnt in an affordable car. K.I.S.S. 4L and 420HP 12:1 CR.

370Z : variable valve lift, variable cam timing . 330hp 3.7L 11:1 CR. Sure it doesn't win the HP/L over the S54 but the engine block is aluminum. It's also available at a more affordable price point. I guess time will tell if its reliable .

That being said I would take any 4 in the car this thread was about except the S54. Even mid engined I don't want a cast iron block in the toucan of car noses. The thing I most admire about nissan is their continual improvement process. They keep upgrading the engine to keep up with the competition. Honda on the other hand is a complete joke.

mehh....

ls1/2/7 lighter (per hp) cheaper stronger

i agree with the s54 that motor is awesome and not all at once... every motor needs ITBs stock
but the cast iron block leaves something to be desired or...weight that should have been shed.

Heavily tweaked intake and exhaust? Are you joking me? Engineering an almost full-bred race engine with solid lifters into a production car to endure daily grind and easily capable of going 200k+ miles is history making engineering feat Rod bearing recall was just that - recall. All engines from 2003 and up include redesigned rod bearings and all of them before 2003 had the rod bearings replaced free of cost.

Not to mention that it won international engine of the year for like 5 straight years. Developing same (actually slightly more) power and same performance from smaller n/a engine 10 years earlier than Nissan 370z speaks for itself.

Yeah, because having an aluminum block is super novel and extremely difficult. Half of the new consumer cars have one today.

Wait, I thought aluminum block is new technology? f-body camaros with LS1 came with aluminum blocks. Or is pushrod bothering you?

If you are self-proclaimed geek who loves technology you should be talking about N54 engine if anything.

I love Nissan. I love their VQ engines, but maybe their continual improvement process stems from not making a good engine design in the first place, hence the need to continually improve and run after manufacturers who actually have bigger racing budget and history. After all, racing is suppose to improve the breed.

....edit: there is nothing wrong with iron block. if anything it will not warp as easily and as fast as aluminum would under coolant loss or overheating.

Duke, I'm guessing that is what you meant to say. The final top version of the 350Z (the nismo one) and the S2000 CR faced off in a Road & Track article last year. Their performance numbers were identical, and on the track the Nismo was barely faster than the S2000. So if we're talking S2000 versus the (heavier than Coupe) 350Z convertible I dont' think you can argue the Nissan's better.

The 370Z is irrelevant, as the S2000 went out of production as it was introduced.

Regarding great NA engines I dont' think you can argue with BMW, however the LS-series Chevy V8s are pretty much better in every way (cheaper, more powerful, better highway gas mileage).

Did you mean to say the Honda is better? I don't see how the Nissan vert is going to hang with the S2000.

google is your friend

Given that other current BMW “sixes” have an aluminum block with cast-iron cylinder liners, it may be surprising that the S54 M3 engine has a cast-iron block. Why?

Compactness is the primary reason. An inline six is longer than a V-6, and BMW nurtures the inline layout because of its superior smoothness and sound. An aluminum block’s cylinder liners take up space; with liners it would not have been possible to achieve the engine’s 3.2-liter displacement without lengthening the block. The second reason is strength. Given that this engine develops a fully 333 hp from 3.2 liters – significantly over 100 hp per liter – its internal stresses are immense.

I think they misread it "You can't argue that the 350z Roadster is better" as "The 350z is better, you can't argue that it is not." I see the confussion. Don't hate fellas
