I think they did calculate how much a functional gundam-style robot would cost, and it turned out to be almost a billion dollars.

Haha, that's sweet.
I get the impression that Japan is going to consider building a military walker sooner or later. Not something 60 goddamn feet tall, but perhaps something else. I think there are commercial (useless) walkers available now. At least this one:

I don't see how those would be useful other than being a 1 man tank capable of moving into tougher terrain/deepr waters that a modern tank would otherwise find unpassable. I mean, that thing is so lightly armored and would stick out like a sore thumb in any combat situation. And I KNOW production of something like that can't be cheap.
But it is uber cool nonetheless.

Humanoid vehicles that size are completely impractical.
I'd say the max size to have a useful mech is about 20' 6/26/2009 11:10:55 AM |

Yeah, it's expensive, but if they refined that design over the course of 20 years, made it bigger and stronger, and then put some guns on it it might be useful. The reason it would be useful is that, in urban combat situations, it can get around crap in the road and maneuver through narrow side streets without worrying as much about destroying everything in its way. The elevated perspective would also make it more useful vs a normal tank. Of course, any such system is pretty far away, and it would require many advances in materials technology to come up with armor strong and light enough that they could put it on something that walks. As is the things would go 1mph.
