unfortunately no. The brief clips in the teaser trailer I just posted are the only thing out there in terms of footage from the show. The pilot was completed 6 months ago or so and screened for HBO as well as a few critics since then but that is all. And as you said, a few months back Dany and Cat were recast so they are going to re-shoot those scenes in the pilot (which is actually quite a few) when official filming for season 1 starts next month.

Yes! They cast the guy I wanted as Gregor

And for reference from before, his brother The Hound:

I think they did an awesome job casting both of them.

Real medieval weapons or LARPing?

That picture looks straight out of Role Models

it was actually full contact training. not LARPing BS. He did it since he knew his roles as an actor would most likely come from a lot of period pieces etc.

Ser Ilyn Payne cast:

The casting for this show has just been outstanding for the first season. I *really* hope the show gets a good reception because I think they are really handling this well. The problem I see is getting interest in this show from people who normally don't get into anything "fantasy" related even though this series doesn't cling to the standard genre tropes too closely. I think a lot of people who didn't read the books are going to see it as another cheesy TV fantasy show and miss out on the amazing writing, drama, and characters the story has to offer.

Looks awesome.

Hopefully they don't run into the same budget issues they did with Rome.

im halfway through the first book, and i thought the hound was an actual dog-man or just a dog. what is he? i guess just a human who can track shit. but he's the prince's "dog" as it was once quoted so far. has me confused.

scottncst8:

your links are blocked for me (just because I'm at work). I am assuming at least one of those videos comes from the new teaser material HBO released this weekend? I was going to post them but didn't want to repost stuff. Either way, this show is looking really promising and I cannot wait for season 1 to start next year. As stated before, I think the success of the show will hinge on getting people to watch it who don't normally enjoy "fantasy" related material.

in a letter from the executive producers to the fans, I though this particularly stood out:

The enthusiasm for the show was palpable before a single actor was cast or a frame shot. Trust us: the Powers That Be noticed. And so did we. When we spend two hours discussing the details of the House Bolton sigil or the hilt of a certain Valyrian steel dagger or the content of a few pages from ‘The Lineages and Histories of the Great Houses of the Seven Kingdoms’ that won’t be onscreen for more than a second – sometimes we wonder if anyone will notice. But someone will. You guys will. And it makes all the difference knowing there are people out there who care as much about this story as we do. We all want to get it right.

When you read something like that, it really gives you hope that they are going to do this story justice.

Also, some of you may notice there is a second thread for this on here entitled HBO's Game of Thrones (Spring 2011) message_topic.aspx?topic=596784. I asked them to leave that thread on here to be used exclusively for the TV show while this thread could then remain for more in depth discussion of the book series for people (like a lot of us) who have read all the currently released books.

While this thread was created because of the tv show, the title would make it hard to find, and I think there have been a few times that some would be "spoilers" have made it into the thread for someone coming to the TV show previously having no knowledge of the story. The idea of the other thread then is for discussion of the show's first season in a hopefully spoiler free environment for newcomers to the series. Please remember in that thread taht there are a lot of things those of us who have read all 4 books take for granted that newcomers would consider spoilers.

/Book Spoiler alert

Why they cast the biggest name actor as Ned Stark is beyond me... Unless they're either gonna fuck with the story, or don't expect it to last many seasons.

Seems like a smart move to me. Ned is the closest to a "main" character or someone you feel like you should be rooting for during book 1. He's about as close as you can get to a face of the series at that point in the story.

Besides, there are other characters that will be introduced in season 2 and beyond, if it goes there, where they can bring in "big name" actors if they feel that they need to (Stannis, Blackfish, Beric, etc.) I don't think it is important at all for this series though.

He is a great Eddard and perhaps having a big name like him will help bring some people in to the show, but I think the overall show will speak for itself.

I seriously doubt they are changing that aspect of the story considering how closely GRRM has said they are staying to his story and with as much money as they are pumping into this I'm sure they fully hope/expect to get several seasons out of this.

I agree it's a great casting choice (as are they all)... but maybe that's why I'm disappointed he won't be around for the whole series

/spoilers (though hopefully this thread can be the spoiler-ridden thread at some point like I said and the GoT thread can be, by nature spoiler-free for newbies )

Oh yea, I can definitely understand that. My hope is that it just adds to the viewers experience for this show. Basically in the same way that I was moved at the end of GoT. I couldn't believe that he was actually killing off Ned at the time - I think because he just felt too much like the MC to exit in book 1. But then the more I thought about it, the more I realized how much it made me want to read on. It was one of those moments when you're reading and a book takes a turn that kind of has 2 layers of emotion tied to it: 1) WTF moment, almost making you, the reader, mad/upset to some extent because you thought Ned was going to be the series badass. 2) Wow, I wonder wtf this author has in store for the rest of the series if he has the balls to do this to his readers in book 1.

He's just a guy (a really big guy, close to 7 feet tall). He's a noble from the Clegane family, their symbol is 3 greyhounds on a yellow background. When he was a child his brother Gregor (who is even bigger than he is) shoved his face in a fire and burned half of it horribly.

He's also not a knight, he finds them hypocritical since they spout crap about civility and chivilry then commit such barbarous acts.

So he's called a hound for multiple reasons: 1) his family symbol, 2) his attitude, 3) his tracking ability, 4) he wears a helmet with a dog face on it

Spoiler

At least they will only have to pay the "big name" actor for about 2/3 of a season

I was pumped for this before, but now that I watched those two Youtube links, I'm even more pumped. It really looks like they've done it right.

The casting as been almost exactly as I envisioned these characters.

I haven't read the fourth book yet -- I've been pacing myself so there isn't a huge wait until the fifth one is released, although that looks to be a foolish endeavor. But I've loved the first three books.

The reason that Martin has postponed the release of the fifth book is that he waited so long to do so that the fans speculated on the storyline until they figured it out. Now Martin is having to rethink the entire story arc so that it doesn't seem like the fans scooped him. I'm assuming that he had to scrap pretty much everything once the fans settled on an arc that was very close to what he was writing. That's what he gets for teasing the readers into thinking another book is imminent and then putting it off for multiple years. All that fat fuck does is go to conventions and try to sell his shit merchandise.

Finish this series before you die of a heart attack you stupid bastard!

^^ agreed on the casting for sure.

and ^ yea I hope that isn't the case as that would be a really poor decision on his part. Sure the rabid fanboys who have every heraldry, name, place, etc. memorized have speculated to the nth degree about the rest of the storyline, but a large portion of his readers have not.

I've read some theories here and there and have a few of my own of course while reading, but just because you have a pretty good idea that Frodo is going to destroy the ring and Aragorn will fulfill his destiny doesn't mean it isn't worth reading LOTR. Changing the storyline simply because some fans think they have the story figured out is just stupid. The story is the story. Sure, make your changes, get some feedback from peers, editors, etc., but don't simply change your story because some people have figured out some pretty plausible, big-picture endings to a few of the character story arcs. The big-picture items aren't what make a story great; the details, dialogue, etc. are what make a story outstanding and worth reading and Martin has all of that in his head.

However, I'm not trying to argue and I agree 100% that he needs to stop going to as many conventions and readings and signings etc. and just finish this dang story. If he finishes this story, it will likely replace any other series I've read and become my all-time favorite book series. If it remains unfinished it's going to piss me off royally.

Rereading the books now, and I LOL and think its hilarious how in detail he describes food at these feasts.

Trenchers of roast onions covered in butter and bacon, with a side of pease in red wine sauce floating in a bowl of honey. The cupcakes were especially good.

I mean, I know you're a fat fuck, and you're supposed to write what you know, but come on dude.

Dude these books are nothing compared to the redwall books. When I was a kid I would salivate just reading them. And there was at least 1 major feast in each book, usually 2.

in the context of this world, Philip Rivers lived up to his name and was a real bastard...no TD's...

just started the 4th book...if it gets to this, i pictured the Prophet as Rob Zombie with even longer dreadlocks with seaweed in it.
