"Do you collect, or do you actually consume this much beer?"

I don't know why anyone would collect beer.

Do I cellar beer for drinking and experimentation? Yes, lambics, sours, barleywines, barrel-aged beers, eisbocks, old ales, imperial stouts. Most beers 1-3 years, for lambics, barleywines & eisbocks, typically 5+ years. So far I haven't had a problem keeping up, the cellar hovers around 300 range, although it's edging up as I'm trading for more lambic recently as that will last 10-30 years.

I drink/share the rest. Have beer tastings every other week with a bottle share group, drink some at Jazz in the park every Sunday night, share more on Weds. with more friends, sometimes have bottle shares at work with contractors. It's fun to share and try so many new beers.

Nearly all the beers on the previous page are drank, except for the lambics, sours, barleywines. The first picture of IPAs I posted were all drank at a blind IPA tasting of which Congress St & Yellow Rose topped the list.

Other new stuff:

So considering that you're sharing, how much do you actually get to drink in a 22 oz bottle? 1 oz? 2? I love sampling as much as the next person, but my personal preference is to sample more than 4 oz. I can hardly say that I had a particular beer if I only took a gulp of it.

A few recent acquisitions, followed by the current state of the cellar...

A handful of 3 Floyds:

Some Chicago stuff from Pipeworks, Revolution, Spiteful, and Lake Effect:

Among other things, ADWTD, Cognac and Double-Barrel Jesus, 2008 Thomas Hardy's, Jewbelation 17 and 18:

And the cellar!

I'd consider something you keep for 5-30 years a "collection", similar to a "wine collection" or a "cigar collection"

Since you're using some of the beer for work, is it a tax write-off?

Similar to a wine or cigar collection, sure. But not a baseball card or action figure collection, where the primary goal is to accumulate value and it's anathema to handle them or do anything that would degrade a collectible beyond mint condition. I'm hoarding, and I do keep some beers for years, but the goal is to eventually drink and discard everything. I don't collect empty bottles. But I do save some beers for long periods of time with the objective of drinking them when they're at their peak (or in some cases, on special occasions).

I buy to drink. I can't have something sitting there that is suppose to be delicious and not want to drink it. Only time I'll save something is if I'm visiting a friend (or a friend is coming down), and I want to share it with them. Or if I buy some nice stouts in the summer and want to save them for winter. Other than that, it's not lasting more than a couple weeks in my house.

On a side note...anyone had a Lawson's Sip of Sunshine? I had one a few months ago from a friend in Connecticut and thought it was good...but nothing special. Was back up there this week and went to a cookout and apparently a store got in a big shipment and everyone was freaking out about it and had 4-packs galore. Had a few more, but still wasn't seeing the big deal. Checked on BA today and it's basically rated the perfect American IPA. wtf am I missing here?

thinking about selling off my cellar. I just don't drink these kinds of beer anymore and can't think of a time when i'd ever get through them.

contains a lot of BA Stouts including but not limited to Sexual Chocolates, Old Rabbits Foot, Event Horizons, BA Old Ruffian, Lindley Parks, Speedway Stouts, BCBS. Sours from Cascade and others.

since I've been working out of town a lot the past few years, I have an entire cabinet full of beers, many that are unintentionally aged for over 2 years.

Local bottle/growler shop got a hold of a Dogfish Head 120-minute IPA keg. Grabbed a half growler of that...interesting stuff. 18 percent. Definitely quality..."big" and "intense" are understatements though.

I'm headed to Colorado in November (will likely be just outside Denver). Which beers are worth bringing back, i.e. things that don't necessarily leave the state?

Almost done stocking up for Christmas...heavy on the porter/stouts of course:

That's probably it...although I'm sure something will pop-up in my beer shop's facebook feed that will make me pick some extra stuff up...but we'll see.

Hope it's cold so I can drink this and get drunk by the fire.

So Ninkasi Brewery beer (out of Eugene, Oregon) is now being distributed in this area. I've had one of their brews in a beer swap before and was impressed. Are you guys getting it in NC as well?

Has Hopslam been released yet in Raleigh? I either missed it, or it should be happening very soon, but I can't seem to find anything definite online.

Picked this beauty up the other day...going to save it for when my next big case settles:

Wife and I went to Holy City on Sunday for a little brunch and a couple beers. Had to get out of the house after that cold week/weekend. They had our favorite brew on tap...Overly Friendly DIPA brewed with jalapeno, cilantro, and pineapple. It's friggin delicious. And they brought out dog beds for our pups that we had with us! Floors were cold, so it was much appreciated. Easily my favorite brewery in town. Best service and best range of quality beers.

Trying to get my hands on some Avery Tweak without driving two hours. Any ideas?

Quote :
"Batch No. 2 | 17.5% alc/vol

Our very own Parker, of the cartoon and cat loving variety, created this cult classic character back in our 17th season. Appearing in several episodes under another stage name that was deemed inappropriate, our executive producers and editors decided that a name change and further character development—a 4-month hiatus in Bourbon barrels—were necessary to satisfy our most ardent and demanding viewers.

Tweak is made with 1.6 lbs. of Ozo Coffee Co.'s organic Isabelle Espresso roast per barrel. We made the coffee toddy by soaking the grounds in the beer rather than in water, which causes better extraction and more awesomeness.

Draft & bottles available starting at 11am. After the brewery release, bottles will make their way around CA, CO, FL, IL, KS, MN MO, NC, NJ, NY, OR, PA, SC, WA, WI, and WY.

https://www.facebook.com/events/1071540179553169/"

ETA: It says it'll be available in NC, but I don't see how that's possible with our 15% cap

Sweet Baby Jesus...this is awesome:

http://www.postandcourier.com/20160629/160629359/craft-beer-maker-lagunitas-to-convert-charleston-brew-pub-into-a-tap-room

Quote :
"A California-based craft brewer has announced plans to take over the Southend Brewery and Smokehouse space in downtown Charleston.

Lagunitas said on its website that is has a contract to convert the longtime brew pub and restaurant at East Bay and Queen streets to Lagunitas Taproom and Beer Sanctuary.

“This turn-of-the-century landmark will be a cornerstone location for Lagunitas in the Southeast, offering small batch beers that are exclusive to the Charleston Taproom and brewed in the existing 10-barrel brewhouse,” the Petaluma-Calif.-based company said.

Lagunitas also said it will use the two top floors of the building as event space that it will make available to nonprofit organizations for fundraising events.

It did not disclose other details, saying only it will release more information about the opening “in the near future.”

Southend Brewery and Smokehouse is housed in the historic Wagener Building."

I don't think it's even closed yet. I'm assuming their lease is ending. That section of Charleston has been struggling for a while with a few exceptions. Everything has been moving away from the Battery. This, however, will kill it. Lagunitas is a big name and that space is amazing. Can't wait to see what they do with it.

I'm out of the beer game for a while (unless I'm going out). Too many homebrews in storage. And I must say, the last 3 I did (all for wedding gifts for groomsmen), turned out pretty good even though they're extract kits.

I've recently noticed Fullsteam bombers available in Richmond, which was a pleasant surprise. When I left NC they weren't even bottling yet.

Also their Common Good (Kentucky-Style Common Ale) is pretty damn good. Almost has a sour-y edge to it.

Can't blame them too much IMO. I'm also interested to see if the funkatorium continues in its current form, that'd be a bigger loss to the craft beer community than WW's conventional beers IMO.

Old Aggie and Old Tuffy are the same recipe, right? Wish they would have done a little something to make it more unique. Basically the can design is the selling point.

I could imagine New Belgium selling out and doing the same recipe but with UNC or Duke on the can to increase their sales.
