suggested before, but why not make a crazycode [spoiler] tag (and button) that does this:

spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler spoiler

span style="background:black"

I think the people that are saying this isn't useful don't read entertainment all that much

especially the true blood thread where spoiler posting is somewhat rampant

I don't see how this would be harder than the crazycode buttons for bold or italics, it's a simple HTML tag

then again, I realize asking for anything is asking for way too much

That and then you are going to ask the user base to use this new crazy code / button. Only like 50% of people properly link to other threads (it even auto-corrects links if you use the link button), how many would actually use the spoiler feature (for legit reasons). Not to mention the fact that people that really care about spoilers usually do something like:

*spoiler*

spoiler tag is a bad idea and using this method takes all of a few extra pushes of the enter button and while a button would be slightly easier, see my previous comment about linking

*spoiler*

Which also begs the question that if you already haven't seen/read/played whatever it is, why the hell would you be reading about it knowing that somebody might not use the spoiler tag even if it existed. I mean if it's a movie/game that I even kind of care about seeing/playing, I usually won't read the thread after the date it comes out until after I've seen/played it. I mean what are people going to talk about in that thread? And if you care about posting spoilers for others to see^

To be honest though, I think the spoiler tag idea is good... for sites geared specifically towards entertainment news/discussions and only then if the use of the tag is enforced.

I do this all the time, to find out whether or not the movie/game in question is in fact worth watching/playing. I usually don't read past page 2 or 3 on movie threads to avoid spoilers, though. It would be an incredibly useful tag to have in entertainment, even if it isn't implemented as an actual button.

Also, using the *spolier* method usually draws my eye directly to the prominent block of text which I do not actually want to read (putting your block of spoiler text in the middle of whitespace? yeah, that sure makes it easier to avoid seeing!). When someone does it, it's sometimes hard to avoid at least catching a line or so. A black highlighting forces you to deliberately want to see the spoilers.

i 100% disagree and would love to have a spoiler button to use
as someone who reads & participates in entertainment section this would be very helpful and useful.
this is actually....feedback.

what?i dont care about gaming spoilers but others might. i care mostly about spoilers in ongoing season threads....SEE the True Blood or Lost Threads....you are basically saying in this quote that we shouldnt even begin discussing past or current episodes which is ridiculous

and there is an older thread on this topic...not much happened then either.

why add a button that's only useful in 1/12th of this website, and much less so if you base that number that on post volume per section. now it might be possible to just have the button load if you're in entertainment, and if so i'd be all for it.

but honestly how can you expect anyone to build features into the site when there isn't even anyone to end all the errors? talking about this is pointless until the owners make a commitment to maintaining this site and building new features.

Well yeah that applies to shows too. I mean I guess the only show related thread I read is Weeds (it has a thread for each season though I guess) but I don't read the Weeds thread until after I've seen the most current episode. I wasn't trying to say that people shouldn't be discussing spoiler-type material, I was trying to convey the idea of "what else are people going to talk about?" Basically in my mind every post would be like:

OMG last night's episode was so awesome [spoiler hidden]

[spoiler hidden]

Oh I know that kind of relates to the first season where [spoiler hiden even though it relates to the first season]

Well in case you didn't notice [spoiler hidden]

(Basically what good is reading all of this?)

I guess if I wanted to start watching Lost or True Blood (only seen a few episodes of Lost, never seen the other) at this point I wouldn't start reading the thread from the most recent page and then complain about the fact that people are discussing what is going on while making no attempt to hide spoilers. Even then the solution seems simple enough: individual threads for individual seasons.

Again I like the idea of spoiler tags and kind of agree with ^ in that it should only be available in Entertainment. But for somebody like me, if I really care about reading a spoiler, I still wouldn't be reading the latest posts and even go one step further by not clicking the thread in general until I'm up to date with episodes.
