People have to grow up sometime.

I like the double standard you have though… blacks aren’t allowed to say their condition is related to slavery and jim crow, but the whites are allowed to harken back to those slave days whenever they want.

And i’m sure you’ve heard the story of the school in mississippi that had their firs integrated prom just last year: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=91371629

They are a backwards people in mississippi and anything that pulls them into the 20th century even is good for them.

come on. blacks complaining about slavery is a million times different than having some kind of regional pride, and you know it.

Considering this is the same region where people have been lynched for trying to help black folks, I'd say they're a lot more related than you'd give credit.

I'm here to agree with hooksaw.

the south definitely doesn't and didn't have the market cornered on racism. at all.

this is an old argument, though. all it takes is reading a few American history books, particularly ones about immigration and socialization.

you shouldn't be ashamed for it just as you shouldn't be chanting in pride about it.

o and stuff like this is why you can't win at old miss. Oxford's just too much of a "rebel" establishment to effectively pull in the top black athletes that can compete with the alabamas lsus etc.

I'M NOT GOING TO CELEBRATE THE SOUTH UNLESS I'M CELEBRATING THE SOUTH AS IT WAS WHEN THEY WERE FIGHTING FOR THE RIGHT TO OWN AND HANG NEGROES!!!!

you people need to read the fucking article.

everyone, aside from a contingent of mob-rule rednecks, is behind the initiative to stop students from shouting a secessionist and historically racist chant at football games.

Quote :
"Chancellor Dan Jones said if University of Mississippi students continue to chant “the South will rise again” during football games, he will have to ask the Ole Miss Band to stop playing “From Dixie With Love.”

“It is my role to listen to the many voices in our Ole Miss community and determine an appropriate course of action,” Jones said in a letter to the student body

Concerned student leaders, administrators, faculty, athletics administrators and coaches, alumni and major donors have called for discontinuing the chant,” the letter [written by Chancellor Jones to the said. “I share their view that these words are harmful. They have been used by others in the past to resist racial integration and the progress of civil rights for everyone. Although those who chant may not have bad intent, the words are painful and create an unwelcome feeling for many on our campus, a place widely known for its grace and Southern hospitality.”

The movement to end the chant started nearly a month ago when the Associated Student Body passed a resolution discouraging students from participating in the chant.

Since then the issue has rallied support from the chancellor and faculty senate as well as gained national media attention from the Associated Press and ESPN.com.

Many alumni, donors, coaches, and faculty members expressed their concerns in a university press release. “If we cannot get behind a student initiative that is trying to do the right thing, then we have failed our students,” Jones said in the press release.

The University of Mississippi Alumni Association (UMAA) is also supporting the resolution."

Slight clarification:

The song in question isn't "Dixie," it's "From Dixie with Love" which is based on "An American Trilogy" (mainly known as Elvis' version). The line where people yell "the south shall rise again" is to the melody of "Battle Hymn of the Republic."

And ^ is right, a lot of people down here have been suggesting for months that the students just change it to something like "Ole Miss shall rise again."

you people also need to listen to the Fifth Stanza from our UNITED STATES NATIONAL ANTHEM.

Quote :
"When our land is illumined with liberty's smile,
If a foe from within strikes a blow at her glory,
Down, down with the traitor that tries to defile
The flag of the stars, and the page of her story!
By the millions unchained,
Who their birthright have gained
We will keep her bright blazon forever unstained;

And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave,
While the land of the free is the home of the brave."

This is rediculous. I think al sharpton, liberal democrats, and certain minorities groups incorrectly autocorrelate southern pride into a convoluted pro-slavery racist mindset.

I know plenty of people up here in the DC metro area who express their southern pride without resorting to chanting "The South Shall Rise Again" and waving a confederate flag. Some southerners just love the idea of how the South was back in 1850, and love to show it!

I'll tell you what betrays these asshole's racism is the fact that as much as they like to pretend that the stars and bars are about "cultural heritage," its obvious that they don't know jack shit about it because then they would know that

1) the stars and bars is NOT the confederate flag (as they claim)
2) the stars and bars was popularized early in the 20th century by white supremacist groups because it was the confederate battle flag

So... yea. Those two little factoids usually results in two reactions

1) Shamed silence
2) Full on redneck rampage as their racism is laid bare for all to see

This is the "Stars and Bars."

Know what you are talking about before you go spouting shit off.

Not only that, but it (and it's other variations with more stars) was the official confederate flag only until 1863, after which a white flag with the "southern cross" emblem on it was adopted.

they don't pick that flag for racist intentions, though. What THEY know of the flag is what it represents TO THEM.

Why did they pick the flag? The popularity of the battle flag is directly traceable to its popularization by white supremacist groups in the early 20th century. Therefore, it IS a racist symbol in our modern context with racist origins and furthermore, they clearly are NOT celebrating a race-neutral cultural history. If they truly had any interest in their cultural history, they would realize the racist origins of the popularization of hte battle flag and they would fly the true confederate flag instead

I'll grant you that, but then they go around claiming that they are just celebrating their history... Well, I'm sorry but you have no right to celebrate your history if you don't even know what it is. And this is not innocent faux-pas. This is a huge offense - they KNOW that it has a racist stigma because otherwise they wouldn't have to defend it with their "its my culture" argument. So, if they know it has racist overtones, perhaps they should investigate why it does rather than knee-jerk rejecting the truth. And that very insensitivity to the racism issue is proof enough that they are, actually, racist.

Bullshit, and you know it. They aren't sayin "it's my culture." They say it's a matter of regional pride. Yes, there's a bit of ignorance there, but they aren't claiming to be taking the high ground of "culture." Likewise, white supremacists [i]also[i/] embraced the cross. Does that mean that anyone displaying the cross is a raging racist redneck?
