Dell snuggles up to Google Chrome OS, offers customized download for its Mini 10V

"In a display of surprising tenacity, Dell have gone ahead and distributed a customized version of Chrome OS for the Dell Mini 10V! Lilputing are reporting that all the necessary hardware support has been added, so in theory you could just whack the Chrome OS image onto a memory stick and boot it up right now!"

Anyone got a Mini 10V?

is there a price for consumers for this thing yet? i saw the $28/user for businesses and $20/user for schools quote, but nothing for consumers. will consumers have a monthly subscription option too? what about 3G pricing?

nm just found this

Quote :
"The Samsung Chromebook will cost $429 in the U.S. for the Wi-Fi only version and $499 for the 3G version. Acer's Wi-Fi only Chromebook will cost $349," reports CNet.""

not cheap enough to interest me

I tried out the most recent nightly of chromium on a usb. All the extensions and apps worked other than the amazon cloud player, it only worked if I went to the site in the main browser window. All the hardware was recognized on my wifes newish toshiba, but no networking worked on my 5 year old dell laptop. About 90% of my daily tasks are in the browser or I could switch to gdocs versions. As for the other 10%, I used the browser version of team viewer and it worked well for remote access to my office pc.

I'd definitely recommend it for an older laptop with supported hardware or on an existing netbook so you can use the windows 7 license elsewhere.

Also I use jolicloud for a better dropbox interface rather than their webpage or an extension.

I've never had a linux distro recognize the hardware on my dell without a lot of work so I wasn't too surprised, typically the wifi is the hardest. What were you trying it on?

I installed the Hexxah build on my dell mini9 and it worked I guess. Everything booted fine, networking seemed ok, etc. But I don't know if the build I got was crappy or what, but a lot of the links didn't work from the main chrome window (the apps) and it was slow as balls. Anyway, not worth the effort.

As an aside, I then tried to install Ubuntu linux 10.04 (and 10.10) via USB (generated on my Mac) and it will not run on the Dell. Which I don't understand because they offer Ubuntu as a pre-installed option so I would expect it to work. I keep getting an error saying "operating system not found" and then it proceeds to the hdd and boots into ChromeOS. Any suggestions? I am the first to admit that navigating the linux forums is beyond me at this point.

Got my CR-48 yesterday!!!! I applied for that bitch when they first announced the program. So far, I definitely like it. It has some shortcomings and is definitely not a full-fledged OS replacement, but overall, it's neat.

I'm looking for new laptops for my mom right now and giving these a bit of thought. Only issue is are they basically bricks if the internet is ever out?

My parents get internet wirelessly (with an antenna mounted to their house) from my dad's work, and the service is occasionally spotty. The internet seems to be out at their house about 1 or 2 mornings per week, and when it is my mom normally just plays solitare or something. Would that be possible on chromebook or would it be useless until the internet returned?

The only application is a special version of Chrome

so unless that shit's in HTML5 LocalStorage or downloaded as a Chrome extension she's SOL
