So ever since 2002 I was told in High School football to "put your face in the numbers" to tackle. 8 years later after suffering from chronic neck pain I discover this in the helmet I cracked (and got for free):

it says:

"Do not strike an opponent with any part of this helmet or face mask. This is a violation of football rules and may cause you to suffer severe neck or brain injury, including paralysis or death."

So who thinks I can sue my old school system for over 3 years of pain and suffering for teaching us a dangerous technique to tackle?

Football is a dangerous sport, the chances of injury are understood by the participants. Man up and get over it.

It's certainly worth a shot, if you don't mind losing.

It was the coaches responsibility to teach safe techniques of tackling (I was an Outside Linebacker), we weren't even 18 yet.

hahaha

what a loser.

No clue

sucks that it caused you an injury man. One of my friends in HS (and one of our best players) had to stop playing football after hitting too many people. Doctor made him stop playing (tackling that way) after he started having random seizures, foaming at the mouth, etc... during the day in classes.

The only thing is I had at least 2 concussions and I never told the coaches. One was a blackout on the field laying down concussion; the others were less severe (more confusion).

I just feel like this could happen to any football player and people need to be warned.

khcadwal would be the person to ask i think

im pretty sure youd have to prove that this was an ongoing thing they taught so you would need other people to back you up and to have developed similar injuries and to prove those injuries came from following the directions of your coach

I do have plenty of football friends who used the same directions and some of them do have similar injuries but not as extensive as mine.

The main thing I have as proof is every film from every game we ever played and a highlight film of my best moments (my Dad filmed and still does).

you might have a case

actually

especially if you have others to form a class action

...

I mean, I played football too... and I'm not sure if I remember that correctly

but "put your face in the numbers" sounds like the kind of advice every coach gives...

which doesn't mean it the correct advice... it's a sound technique but it might not be a healthy one

...

actually, I don't know if negligence falls under "giving direction or advice"

you weren't "forced" to "put your face in the numbers"

you were directed and advised but not forced...

...

and the responsibility probably does fall upon you to follow the equipment directions...

actually... as silly as this sounds, do minors have the ability to "legally" follow directions

is there an age when they are held responsibly... you can't expect a 3 year old to be able to read and follow directions

the only thing is the coaches who were there in 2004, almost half of them are gone now.

I've always wondered about this ever since my neck pain started and I know of at least 3 other players with similar injuries who played linebacker/fullback

BREAKING NEWS: YOU CAN GET INJURED PLAYING FOOTBALL

Goddamnit, just stop being a pussy. It sucks you've got permanent injury, but to try and blame someone else for it years later is a total bitch move.

Don't you and/or your guardian have to sign some sort of release in order to play high school football?

There is a release, I'm in the process of getting a copy of the 2004 release that I signed. (it changes yearly)

I know you can't sue for a bunch of things, but being advised to do something extremely dangerous (like shoving your face mask into a person) is unlikely covered in the release. I know death was covered but that was by pure accident, not by direction from the coaches.

anyone that plays/played football knows all coaches said to keep your head up and put your face mask in the numbers.

Also for someone undersized (I weighed 140lbs Sr Year) helmet to helmet contact is the most effective way to knock a bigger person down due to center of gravity.

It's a good thing they didn't tell him this. If you have neck pain after they gave you this advice, you didn't do it right. Period. How the fuck else do you think you're suppose to tackle a guy, let him run by you then..umm...put your facemask in the back of his numbers?

I'm guessing you played football to try and be popular even though you probably are only half way athletic. And you got punished for it.

anyone who participates in high school sports has to sign some type of waiver relieving the school, school system, employees etc. from any liability in order for you to your participate in sports. It was usually a form you filled out when you got your physical form turned in.

I know there was a release, now I just need a copy of it to see what it says. Anything could or could not be covered in the release. Just because you signed a release doesn't mean the coaches can do anything or teach you unsafe techniques.

Helmet to helmet contact is not the easiest way for a smaller man to knock down a larger man. Hitting high will get your narrow ass run over.

What's the contrubutory negligence rule in NC? I mean, if it's a serious injury I got because my football coach was an idiot who coached me to break my neck... maybe I deserve some $north carolina.

I wonder how many of these people played football?

I mean, maybe some people who actually played will tell you the same thing

but footballs fucking rough, and you do do what the fucking coaches tell you to do...

and regulations on athletic sports are not perfect... they could be fucking something up across the board, it is possible

In eighth grade our Football coach asked me to come out and kick (I was a soccer player). Within 3 days I was the starting tail back and starting safety (which I sucked royal balls at). He pretty much drilled it into me to "keep your head up, keep your head up, keep your damn head up" and asked me if I wanted to be paralyzed for not following these rules?

Leading with your head as a defensive player = scared to get hit and run over while still making the tackle.

That's really all this comes down to. Hell, the pros still do this because they don't want to get punked. Regardless, you can still get low as hell while tackling and not use your head.

Sounds like this guy is just a fucking retard.

I dunno, I'm pretty sure coaches at just about every level, including the ones who coached me advised our DBs to hit low in the open field. No coach that wants to keep his job is ever going to tell you to intentionally go helmet to helmet.

which is illegal, right... now that I'm thinking about it... that's spearing

helmet to helmet is stupid and no right minded coach would suggest it
