This is a pretty interesting documentary/experiments on kids: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/video/flv/generic.html?s=frol02s42cq66&continuous=1
Some kids say they know what it feels like to be discriminated against, the teacher calls them out, and does a very revealing experiment I think...
Has some funny-ish parts too

this is about the experiment where the teacher tells the students that one eye color is better than others, if yo've ever taken a psychology class before you can save yourself the time for the video, you're already studied it. 2/13/2010 3:24:51 PM |

^ i've taken a psychology class, and i've never studied it.
In Part 5, they do the same lesson on adults.

Strikes me as like the Milgrim experiment or the Stanford Prison experiment... we get some unique insights, but I don't see it flying in today's elementary schools. The teacher herself said that she wouldn't recommend all teachers doing this, because if it was done wrong it could very easily damage the little kids. But her core concept, trying to teach kids that discrimination is bad in a concrete way they can grasp, seems right. She also said she hoped the need for this kind of experiment would diminish over time. I know every class I had as a child had more diversity than I saw in that class room, and I went through the county school system in Mayberry. 2/13/2010 3:34:23 PM |

Diversity alone though isn't symbolic that the problems the teacher is working against don't exist.
I think the arguments we've had on this message board show this very clearly. Heck, the arguments you see mainstream politicians put forth show that many of them have never considered the issues this teacher is talking about.2/13/2010 3:36:10 PM |
ScubaSteve All American 5523 Posts user info edit post |
yea, just having diversity doesn't solve the problem. she actually shows that there is no difference and how it feels to be on the "powerless" side of things. 2/13/2010 3:44:36 PM |

The best part is how performance goes down immediately on those who are looked down upon. That is the last thing all the bigots want to here. Especially the way they make their arguments on this forum in particular. 2/13/2010 4:17:35 PM |

I guess this would be unethical if it were a psychological experiment, but it isn't; it's a lesson.
This is far from license-revoking. I fact, I was shown this in two of my education classes. 2/13/2010 4:40:39 PM |

I'd heard of this experiment and I'd never given it any merit; figured it was some teacher with a chip on her shoulder. I didn't realize it had been video-taped.
It's absolutely worth watching, and that teacher deserves a fucking award or something. 2/13/2010 5:30:35 PM |

I'm trying to get at why he would have had that perception of the teacher.
Nothing accusatory on my part. Just genuine curiosity about why a person would hear about the study and assume the teacher must have had a "chip on her shoulder." 2/13/2010 10:18:18 PM |
Lumex All American 3666 Posts user info edit post |
My perception had nothing to do with women. I simply felt that kind of experiment wasn't going to produce constructive results, and only an imposing liberal activist educator with a "chip on his/her shoulder" would go that far to prove a point.
As you can see, I changed my mind entirely and have a great deal of respect for the woman now. 2/13/2010 10:46:41 PM |

^Cool. I didn't think it was a woman thing, by the way. Truly had no idea where you were coming from. From my experience in NC, there aren't many "imposing liberal activist" teachers. It's a weird stereotype to me. 2/14/2010 1:03:40 AM |

Growing up in a rural NC school my teachers all seemed pretty conservative. My middle school science teacher taught directly from the bible sometimes. I kind of enjoyed the classes where I could get him talking about the apocalypse. 2/14/2010 1:07:00 AM |

I wish more parents and teachers had passion about educating/raising children like that woman Jane Elliott (damnit, I'm going to stop calling her woman).) She's most definitely earned my respect and I wish more people like her were in everyones' life. I am fortunate that my own mother is, at least to me, equally amazing as Jane Elliott.
She's got a wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Elliott
You know, fwiw, I think people need to accept humiliation. Humiliation is part of life. Denying it is like denying death. Accept it and one would find it much easier to move on. Fight it, and you only do more harm than good.

According to her wiki article, her kids were shunned and taunted, other teachers wouldn't speak to her, and her father's business was forced into bankruptcy due to boycotts.
