i don't think it's necessarily disagreements. but Capone, as well as the audience, can clearly see Torrio has checked out since returning from Italy. He's realized there's more to life than business and he's making preperations to get out. I won't spoil the real life story of Torrio, but it looks as if the show is writing towards that conclusion.

I just rewatched 8 Mile. Van Alden is the dude banging Rabbit's mom when he walks in on them at the beginning of the movie.

i'm inclined to disagree. but, to be honest, it was mainly because of Nucky himself, who is probably my least favorite character, and nothing more. the episode, away from the Ritz was great.

I, too, thought this episode was great aside from Nucky. I just think they went overboard trying to get across the point of Nucky being concussed and not right in his mind. It got a little annoying.

I have a feeling Owen is gonna die this season.

Nucky is generally one of my least favorite characters as well, but I thought this episode was fantastic and I thought his storyline was the main reason why. I thought it was great to see a more vulnerable Nucky, and this episode was pretty awesome visually.

i think the Nucky story-line is one of the best in the show. showing his ultimate rise and now witnessing his fall is awesome. his desperation is incredible, so much as to bluntly saying right in front of Margaret to kill someone pretty brutally. then the desperation with all the "bosses" he called for the meeting to which not a single one is willing to back him against Gyp and Masseria. he will self-implode and the concussion is only helping matters along. i think it is a form of foreshadowing.

the rest of the episode was good. loved seeing Richard getting some real respect and adulation at the Veterans' dance. i'm so done with Gillian though, she needs to go. Richard needs to just pop her and get it done, take Tommy out of the whore-house and get serious with the lady. And Margaret i will not be sad to see go in any capacity. leaves with Owen or gets killed somehow.

^i'm curious to see if they are writing Richard toward freeing himself from Gillian and running off with Tommy and his new lady. As i've said before, he was only supposed to be a one-off character and it's really going to be a stretch to bring him under Nucky's wing when Richard was so loyal to Jimmy and knows Nucky was the one who killed him. I feel like maybe they are doing a fan service and writing a way for us to see a happy ending for Richard, the end to Gillian, and a conclusion to that entire side of the story this season.

Nucky pays Richard Harrow to off Gyp, with the sizable amount of cash he gets he runs off with the new lady and Tommy. End of Richard Harrow storyline.

^^It happens more frequently than you'd think that characters who were intended for just one episode or a few episodes end up getting more expanded roles. Hell, [spoilers if you haven't seen Breaking Bad, stop reading this now]

Jesse in Breaking Bad was supposed to be dead by the end of the first season, now he's arguably just as central to the show as Walt. When fans react very positively to an intriguing character like Richard Harrow, shows pay attention to that sort of thing and figure out a way to keep those characters running. So it's quite possible that Richard will be sticking around for a while.

As far as him coming under Nucky's wing...Richard is a soldier. He loved Jimmy, yes, and he knows Nucky killed Jimmy, but he has already made it clear to Nucky that he understands Jimmy made that choice to die (because Jimmy, too, was a soldier), and that was the only end for Jimmy. I think that Richard, of all the characters in the show, would be the one most likely to "forgive" Nucky and come under his employ.

That said, I don't see what would be in it for Richard right now other than money, and Richard doesn't seem like a character who'd be in it for the money. Maybe Nucky helps him find a way out from under Gillian? But even that is something Richard could probably figure out on his own, without Nucky's help...so I don't know. But I don't think we can discount the possibility that Richard could become Nucky's hired gun to kill either Gyp and/or Owen and/or Margaret.

^Agreed. Although Richard knows that Nucky killed his best friend he still respects Nucky and understands why he did it. I'm thinking that Owen and Margaret will try to run away, maybe Nucky will employ Harrow to track them down and kill them. Or at least kill Owen. I think Nucky feels kind of guilty about how he has been treating Margaret but who knows, maybe Nucky will kill her too and raise her kids as his own. They sure like him.

I'm sure Nucky will have no qualms with Harrow killing Gillian... Harrow knows that she was the one who gave Rosetti the info on where to put the bomb. So Harrow gets Tommy and the new girl. Nucky gets the brothel as another business endeavor and the coolest guy in the show as his henchmen.

I'm liking the fall of nucky. If you remember the very first episode everyone was cheering and drinking at a table. Nucky had so many people in his pocket. Seems each one has chipped away over the seasons leaving to now with nothing. Will be interesting to see how he survives at the bottom.

My fiance was heartbroken about Owen even though I told her it was going to happen early in the episode.

Are we allowed to discuss the scenes from next episode on here? I don't want to get anyone's panties twisted.

How can Gyp's men still be loyal and follow him after that scene on the beach? To watch someone brutally murder another man's family member in front of him while he is essentially helpless to do anything? Over what amounted to absolutely nothing?

And since we all assume that Gyp will eventually be offed this season, in what way could the writers write a death scene for him that would make it feel like he got what was coming to him? I can't think of a horrible and excruciating enough ending for his character at this point.

Does anyone else think that Owen might have known he wasn't going to come back from the Masseria hit alive. That he willingly went knowing he'd die? Nucky was ready to go toe-to-toe with Masseria in a war, but Owen offered up himself to do it small scale. He could have been trying to save himself from a worse fate when Nucky found out he knocked up Margaret. Also, did the other guy (the corrupt prohibition agent) who went with Owen survive? Was he the one who ratted him out? Because, although Luciano and Lansky may have known about an impending attack from Nucky when they made the heroin deal with Masseria on the bocce courts, there is know way they knew about the assassination attempt in the bath house.

I'm like your fiancé here even though his fate was obvious episodes ago. As was Margaret carrying his child. Still. The scene was well done, and Nucky's face when he figured it out was pretty awesome.

I don't understand how anyone can be loyal to Gyp either. I cringe when he's on screen. He's even got me, watching at home, talking to the TV "shut up man! You're gonna piss him off and he'll kill you!" so in that sense...they're still loyal bc they're scared as shit to not be.

Hoping Nucky calls in Harrow now, but at the same time I don't bc I would like at least one (almost) happy ending for one character.

I didn't watch scenes for next week bc I watch on hbo go, so you have to actively watch those. I don't necessarily mind though.

i honestly don't think so. Owen was confident to a fault. I think the warning from Lucciano was all Masseria needed to increase security around him and Owen walked right into a trap.

I'm guessing the women's health story line will come full circle when Margaret has to ask Dr. Mason for an abortion and it gets him fired from the hospital.

Or she dies during it because it is in some back alley and not a hospital.

I dunno. The face Owen made when going into the bath house made it seem like he'd made his peace with what was about to happen. Plus the fact that he could bold face lie to people with a straight face (telling Katy he'd marry her, telling Marg he hoped it was a boy) doesn't really give you faith that he would have followed through with any of his plans with Margaret. This seemed like his way out. Kinda like how Jimmy accepted his fate last season.

i can agree with that. but i think we're trying to read deeper into a character who, frankly, wasn't very fleshed out to begin with.

^^Definitely, both in terms of the number of people and the plan itself...when I heard Nucky's/Owen's plan was "OK...we're gonna go to where Joe Masseria is and shoot him, and then we're gonna kill Gyp!," I was really surprised and confused. Usually Nucky is a lot more meticulous and that just sounds like such a vague, halfassed plan.

And yeah, I think Owen might've suspected that was his last rodeo. I think that was the point of including him telling Nucky not to send any more men. Could've been cockiness but with the things he told both Katey and Margaret...it just adds up that he probably knew he was about to die.

I'm curious to see how the relationship between Luciano/Meyer and Nucky evolves next season and beyond once Nuck takes care of Gyp, and if he ever finds out that Luciano tipped off Masseria.

I didn't read it as though Owen knew he was going to die. He was a hit man for the IRA right? I just saw it as though Masseria knew he was coming and laid a trap.

You know Harrow's going to die though; he has a girlfriend.

^Was there any subtlety about how the audience was supposed to feel about, for example, Marlo Stanfield? No, but Marlo is still a good character. These kinds of stereotypical, psychopathic villains exist in shows. To me, what matters most is if they're convincing in those rules, and I find Bobby Cannavale/Gyp to be fairly convincing. Is he predictable? Of course...but I still enjoy many of the scenes he's in.

*note that I'm not saying Gyp is as good a villain as Marlo Stanfield, just pointing out that it can still work in television to have ruthless, psychopathic villains that the audience isn't necessarily supposed to relate to.

I kinda agree. They tried to portray him as a character deserving of the audiences' sympathy in a few scenes (with his sisters and mother or praying in church), but his psychoticness more than makes up for it the other way. Are we supposed to feel bad that his father worked hard as a brick layer and died at 50? Are we supposed to feel bad that he isn't as intelligent and tries to make up for it in muscle? His overcompensating makes him come off as a bratty (sadistic) child. I feel like the writers want you to feel something for him, and I feel like I want to too, but there is really no redeeming quality for this character. I can't wait for him to die a gruesome death and I will be rooting for it. But this show is weird and I can't figure it out just yet. I guess that is what I like about it. Some things are blatantly obvious and you can see coming a mile away. Like Owen dying. Other's are totally up in the air and I could picture it happening a number of different ways. Like Gyp's outcome.

While I don't see a huge problem with the one-dimensioness of Gyp (there are actual psychotic people out there with personalities similar to him), I do take take issue with that charicterization of Marlo, who was my favorite character in the series. Marlo was never cruel, sadistic or psychotic. He was ruthless, but so were most drug dealers in the series. Marlo had a certain modesty that Avon and Stringer never had. He was a successful drug dealer and that's all he tried to be, while Stringer wanted to masquradee as a businessman or a president and Avon imagined himself as Scarface. Marlo made cold, calculated, long term decisions and surrounded himself with a skilled and loyal group of soliders, and that's what it took to "win the game".

i agree with that. I've been familiar with Bobby Cannavale since his Third Watch days so i'm not the best judge in this instance.

and that's probably why i enjoy Gyp Rosetti a lot more than the majority of people in here.
