The part when Nucky asked Jimmy what happened to his hand and he said he punched a block of ice or whatever... there is random high pitched laughing that sounded really out of place. I rewinded it like four times and it just got funnier and funnier.

Van Alden knew who Lucy was, right? He had to...

Jimmy is my favorite character, by far. That scene was awesome when he shot the guy in the head... I get a kick out of hearing the names of all the famous gangsters that have smaller parts at the begging of the series. All of these guys will get bigger as prohibition goes on and, God willing, the series goes on.

[Edited on November 22, 2010 at 11:19 PM. Reason : nm... he looked lucy up in that paper for the show -- i just remembered that]

I think he knew who she was by name. Remember he had a flier in his room with her picture on it. I dont think he went to the club to see her. Maybe he did. Just the look he had on his face when he saw her suggested he wasn't expecting to see her. Or maybe he wasn't expecting to see her sitting alone at a table.

But as the story goes it makes sense that he goes after her after Margaret rejected him. Or maybe he was so horned up that he needed some leg. lol

Either way he's going to try to use her to go after Nucky. Seems like Nucky would already have had him taken out. Or maybe thats coming?

From what I know of real life history, it's very rare these guys would ever put a hit on any LEO of any kind. They got away with a lot of shit on a lot of levels, so any hit on a LEO, especially a federal agent, would be bad for business... very bad.

you're thinking of mobsters from the 50's. In the 20's, you could get rid of a federal agent and pay off everyone they worked with.

Really? Aside from him being annoying as shit (which is a personal preference) he's pretty much a caricature, and not an amusing one at that...some shows I don't expect better from but this isn't one of them.

You realize this show is a work of fiction and not a reenactment right? Many of the characters are based on actual people, but aside from particularly notable details (like Harding being elected president or Lucky Luciano surviving to be a senior citizen) they aren't going to stick to a historical script. The producers have said as much in interviews, and intentionally done things to delineate the characters from their historical counterparts (for instance they named the main character Nucky Thompson not Nucky Johnson). Not to mention the fact your analysis seems like it was derived entirely from mafia movies that were made about a different era.

Anyways I thought this last episode was fantastic, and I loved Al Capone's maturation at the bar mitzvah, Mrs. Schroeder's increasing disenchantment with being a kept woman, Jimmy's inability to control his jealousy/rage, and the continuing character development of Richard Harrow. The scene where Harrow connects with the Schroeder kids through the Wizard of Oz was just masterful and a joy to watch.

I know plenty about the era and I'm not sure what made you think I thought this was a reenactment... I realize guys like Jimmy and Harrow are not real historical figures and I know Nucky was actually a big dude who was not even named Thompson, unlike his character.. But they are doing a good job from what I can tell of representing the beginning of the era.

And I still don't think they went around hitting federal agents every time they were sniffing around. There was enough money flowing up top to keep the guys like Van Alden from pinching a guy like Nucky and having it stick..

"The rise of organized crime proved deadly for police. There were over 1,800 officers killed in the 1920s, the most of any decade in this century. In 1929, more than 200 police officers were killed for the first time. A year later, 244 officers were killed. This remains as the largest number of deaths of police officers in a single year. By 1933, the year Prohibition was repealed, the number of police officer deaths began to decline."

http://social.jrank.org/pages/1331/Law-Enforcement-Deaths-Police-Officers.html

What I was getting at though was that whether organized crime killed a lot of LEOs or not, you can't use that as evidence that the writers are or aren't going to kill off an entirely fictional character. It would be different if Van Alden was Elliot Ness or somebody we know survived prohibition, but he isn't.

Saying the show is unrealistic is rather moronic...a bunch of the characters/events are lifted pretty much directly from history. It's as realistic as any scripted show on TV. And I think the vast majority of the characters are multifaceted and well drawn. If you think the story is dull, that's fine but it seems like pretty much everyone else is enjoying it...at least those of us with attention spans greater than that of children.

So your saying it would be OK and not "bothersome" to have the characters wearing digital watches and using cellphones?

Yes because not enjoying an hour of this crap makes you childish. Also - ratings are way down from the pilot and the reviews are at best, mixed.

Ah ok, so basically you're only real criticism is that Paz de la Huerta has implants? That's a pretty fucking silly thing to stop watching a show over, but whatever. Especially when it's one detail in a thousand that is off.

It just seems like you have a tiny attention span if you call an episode with a ton of action in it dull.

I've seen one review out like the 15 I read that was less than flattering. Now I don't pretend to read every TV critic but it seems to me that the critical response has been overwhelmingly positive.

Again I ask - if Steve Buscemi took a cell phone and used it, would it not be a deal breaker?

The tit implants are not the deal breaker. I'm not finishing this season because of the one dimensional and unrealistic characters, as well as painfully slow pace.

It has nothing to do with disagreeing with the greatness of this show, it has to do with you just repeating the same shallow and pedantic criticism over and over again instead of actually addressing points I make. And I don't think Lucy having implants is analogous to a character using a cellphone so I didn't bother responding to that question. I mean were the producers supposed to recast Lucy because the actress had implants? Seems unnecessary to me.

Oh yes - great points you are making. Much more logical and "correct" then mine.

And yes, the producers should have gotten an actress without implants to play the role, the same way they would not allow a digital clock to be in frame. Its the same thing, you can "disagree" with it all you want. If your going to do a period piece, you can be "selectively" accurate. If "X" didn't exist in the time period, it should not appear on screen.

Again, this is not the reason I'm not finishing off the season. I feel no connection to Nucky, the "lesbian" storyline is unrealistic and Jimmy is an asshole with no redeeming characteristics. Plus, Michael Pitts poor acting is distracting.

It's not the same thing at all, and I didn't even notice she had implants until this episode (and it doesn't seem like you did either). I really don't know why you're fixating on this, I noticed it and didn't even give it a second thought since there was plenty of other stuff going on the episode. It just seems like you're focusing on extremely minor details that really have no relevance in the larger context of the show.

How is the lesbian storyline unrealistic? You think there weren't lesbians in the early 20th century? Jimmy has plenty of redeeming characteristics (helping out Pearl and Richard Harrow, seems like a relatively good father and husband despite hardships, he's a war hero, etc.)

One of the most fascinating thing about Jimmy's character is how incredibly respectful he is towards man for such a violent guy. Not only does he never put his hand on a woman, he never even mouths off to a woman. I'd call that something of a redeeming quality. And, like armor said, he seems to be a pretty capable, loving father. As a matter of fact, his violent streak seems to be his only bad quality, and a large part of that probably goes back to his service in the war (as they've hinted at).

Also, as far as the critical response to this show:
Quote :
"
Boardwalk Empire: Season 1
Metascore
88
out of 100
Universal acclaim
based on 30 Critics

The Wire: Season 5
Metascore
89
out of 100
Universal acclaim
based on 24 Critics"

Not comparing it to The Wire just yet...Just saying, the critical response for Boardwalk has been overwhelmingly positive. It's HBO's best show in probably five years.

I noticed the implants right away They are as out of place as a cell phone. Cool you can ignore it, it bugged me. This show prides itself on its historical accuracy (right down to the use of "motherfucker") - how can you justify those tits?

The les storyline is beyond - and if you feel its realistic (regardless of the timeline) you really have very little real life experience.

A good father? He beat a man into a coma while his 2 year old cried his eyes out 5 feet away. he leaves his kid to fuck hookers? What exactly makes him a "not so bad" father?

Not one single character I give a fuck about. You enjoy your show - but to me its pretentious, dull with piss poor acting. Interesting how you could not defend Michael Pitts.

Look man, if you're not going to bother explaining why you think it's unrealistic then just shut up about it. You just repeating "it's unrealistic" over and over again with a sprinkling of ad hominem attacks is not a valid argument.

I never said he's a perfect father...his interaction with his son other than that incident has been kind and nurturing and as far as we can tell he isn't physically or emotionally abusive which is more than you could say for 95% of fathers at that time. And he didn't leave his kid to fuck hookers, he left because there was a warrant for his arrest, so he was going to be away from his kid for a while whether he left town or not.

I think his acting is fine, you don't...what's left to argue about on that subject? You've repeated your reductive analysis of this show ad nauseam, there's no need for you to continue shitting up the thread.
