TSB has the most varied mix of posters of the 3 msg boards i frequent. It’s probably slightly to the right most of the time i think.

It’s not surprising though that EarthDogg would think it’s lost to liberals, because he’s so far to the right, i bet hooksaw seems liberal to him.

D. Democrat

We already had a political leanings thread a couple of months ago & there were a lot of complaints b/c ppl leaned different ways on different issues. While party affiliation doesn't tell the whole story it is much less ambiguous as to which party you are registered with rather than trying to find 1 word that describes all your political leanings.

I think I added everyone who picked one of the actual choices on this multiple choice quiz instead of scribbling in the margins and hoping for partial credit.

A. Libertarian - red baron 22
B. Republican - Gzusfrk
C. Independent - merbig, d357r0y3r, Socks``, tmmercer
D. Democrat - God, OopsPowSrprs, AndyMac, Supplanter
E. Other - spöokyjon, BobbyDigital, wdprice3

^^^Which way TSB leans depends entirely upon where you place libertarians in a linear left-vs-right scale.

If they're set further to the right than Republicans (using a definition of "conservative" that has not been taken over by Christian fundamentalism), then TWW is definitely somewhat right-leaning, but if they're set somewhere in the middle (using a definition of "conservative" that more or less incorporates the fundie wing of the GOP), then TWW is fairly balanced or maybe a little bit left-leaning.

As for EarthDogg, lately he's been so scared of Obama that he's been towing a hard Republican line more than anything else... so yeah, he'd probably see TWW as liberal-dominated. Also, Supplanter has been posting so goddamn much lately that it makes things seem a bit more Democrat/liberal dominated than it really is. Also, hooksaw doesn't seem to be actively posting right now, which means the right have lost their primary shouter of talking points and rabid attempts at justification.

For comparison, aaronburro has 256 posts in the soapbox so far this month, Solinari has 222, I have 215 (or if you want to count my apolitical myers-briggs thread where I kept reposting the updated list over & over then 234), Moron & Kris both have about 200. But our most frequent poster award goes to the right, not the left.

^Yes, but most of EarthDogg and aaronburro's posts consist of easily-ignored partisan non-sequiturs, or two-line posts during a pointless argument with someone else. Yours tend more and more towards being larger or more-noticeable posts containing pictures, news stories, mission statements from the coffee party, or videos. You show up better.

While yours is a somewhat better posting style than being constantly argumentative with a fetish for logical fallacies, it's just gratingly activist. (This last bit is just my personal take on it, though. The first paragraph of this post is my point.)

I would put libertarians, or at least myself, further left than most "liberals" on this board. Why? Because I'm for maximum freedom. I don't say, "people should be able to live how they want to, except when it comes to money, then the government should step in and tell people how to live and how much they should be able to earn." Democrats and Republicans stand for just about the same thing. The only difference is in which areas they support authoritarianism.

Registered GOP, but for only one reason: I don't want to burn any bridges needlessly due to the fact that I think I'd like to run for office someday, and I have hope that the GOP will make a move to embrace the libertarian wing of the party.

If it wasn't for that, I would be registered as a Libertarian, although they're mostly (in the Libertarian Party specifically...not talking about those like me who hold a generally libertarian philosophy) a bunch of ridiculous, extremist ideologues that I don't really support in practice, either.

As far as how I actually fill out ballots, I just don't vote a whole lot. I'd say it's maybe 1/4 GOP, 1/4 Libertarian, and 1/2 abstain/write-in "no confidence".

I am on the right side of all issues, i.e. A) libertarian.

I don't care if Tom fucks Paul as long as Obama stops laying off John, hiring Ruben, and handing 25% of my paycheck to Shaniqua.

Though I do not blame him for sending 6% of my paycheck to Deacon and Hilda or indebting my kids to pay for hip replacements for Saralie and Gertrude...

I do blame him for sustaining these intolerable injustices while making the country worse off through the power grabs he pursues on a daily basis.

I would never threaten to assassinate a political leader but I certainly would defend a constitutionally sound executed coup d'etat. I don't think anyone should die, but they should be held accountable for their actions.

Libertarian here.

My dislike of Pres. Obama's policies and politics may have created the impression that I support the GOP. But they can be just as statist as democrats.

I'm for smaller gov't, more liberty and more personal responsibility.

When you leave this sort of measurement up to people picking labels for themselves, then you're just going to get a bunch of confusion based on people's subjective evaluations of the labels. That, and these labels are straight up retarded. I mean, you have people who are on the left and right saying they're "independent" already.

Best idea: have everyone take this quiz...
http://www.politicalcompass.org/

then plot everyone's results on a chart. The site has a pretty good explanation of the methodology.

I mean, if we're just going to pick something to describe ourselves, I pick this:

I think the party identification is a decent topic because it hasn't been done recently. In the fall we did a political leanings thread using that campus, and in the winter we did a self identify as left/right thread, so now in the spring I think party affiliation is okay since it is different.

I just took some time to throw together the results from compass thread. I eliminated any result that I figured was fake (for example if you scored off the map entirely in the white zone or stated it was a joke) or ones where people took the test the way they thought someone else would answer (so if I erred I don't think it would be by more than 1 result). And I was eye balling it so these my be a hair off, but since I counted the blocks each time, it shouldn't that far off. Anyways, this might be a good general feel of where the soapbox stands.

^Looks fairly balanced there. And where I plotted everyone's compass from fall '09 there wasn't huge disparities between right and left... if anything the biggest thing that jumps out at me was how much of a libertarian lean there was.

^There was at least one correction to that list

That one's a toss up. Me personally, and this is strictly my personal interpretation, I see a strong aversion to government interference in this poster's response. I think the focus on social issues is a trick. I did some posting research and he/she isn't in love with Obama: "I'm still counting down the days until Chairman Obama apologizes to the kind and gentle North Koreans for the sinking of the SK ship."

support gay marriage : govt stay out
legalization of drugs : govt stay out
assisted suicide : govt stay out
paying for all/higher education : thank you comrade
crackdown to protect the fishes : thank you comrade
net neutrality : govt stay out of other's business
stem cell research : govt stay out
abortion : govt stay out
prostitution: govt stay out
heavy banking regulation : thank you comrade

That's 3 commies to 7 govt stay out. Anyways look at his/her chart above.

That is some funny math if you are counting supporting gay marriage as a right winger position, when their last president tried to have the US constitution amended to ban it. And the legalize drugs thing too. The 14 states that allow medical marijuana are almost all "liberal coast" states. And the religious right is hardly pro-prostitution, I'm not saying the left is either, but govt stay out of it is a pretty poor way of defining the right. Looking at tdub results, the left was ever so slightly more of a government stay out group than was the right.

But I agree that public funding for education is communism. Ever wonder why a public university like NCSU is so red? It ain't the bricks.

Well, many of us didn't ever want that label in the first place. The left gave it to us because we oppose welfare, affirmative action, taxes, etc. and support gun rights, private school vouchers, etc.

I agree with "I believe in gay marriage, legalization of drugs, assisted suicide. I believe the government should pay for poor peoples children's education as far as they want to take it as long as they maintain a b-c average. I believe the government should crack down hardcore on nitrogen pollution in our waterways. I support net neutrality. I support stem cell research and abortion in the third trimester. I believe in the legalization of prostitution. I support strict regulations on banking and a crackdown on CEO pay." as well as support for animal rights, prohibition of mountaintop removal mining, legalization of polygamy, the complete removal of the word 'god' from everything in local, state and federal governments, expanding and enforcing the endangered species act, a complete overhaul of patent and copyright laws, and even allowing citizens to vote to revoke corporate charters.

Does this sound conservative?? Am I in the right?

Get it? There can only be left and right.... liberal or conservative. This makes no sense.
This offers literally no insight into anything. People are so fucking polarized -- IT US OR THEM.
Sheesh.
(Of course, the brilliant part of the 2-party system's polarization is that nearly everyone, myself included, is guilty of thinking that way one time or another.... Then we can't complain without appearing hypocritical.)
