1st episode just ended. I'd give it a 9/10

Zombie type: walkers, fair motor skills, low-level memory, eats both people & animals

Liked: character & plot building. Follows most all WWZ & Zombie survival guide outline on how zombies will act

Disliked: inconsistent zombie aggression. I personally dislike the use of any memory capability with zombies, like knowing how to turn a door knob. Random outdoor camp of survivors - i lol'ed.

I didn't read any of the comics, so I had no idea what to expect. I'm just taking it as it comes.

Great show so far...production values were a lot higher than I expected. I haven't read any of the comics yet, but the show is making me want to go pick them all up.

Despite the fact that most of the zombies shown so far seem to be the slow, shambling type, they still managed to create some true oh shit moments. I liked the idea that the zombies were attracted to noise, which made using guns a liability at some points.

As a side note, I'd highly encourage anyone who didn't watch this at the Galaxy (and is in the area) to watch there. Good crowd, free tickets, very well run, and free giveaways/prizes each week.

caught most of this tonight during the game. not bad for a zombie show. i expected a lot of "jump-scare" scenes (especially when the dude was just getting out of the hospital) but so far its been pretty minimal, which makes the show more realistic IMO.

i'm going to go ahead and predict that the kid is going to become a liability and will need to be dealt with when he has a close run in with the mom.

I think you will be able to see plenty of violence in other episodes, I was happy not seeing a lot in the first episode, it's building things up and creating developed characters.

SPOILER BELOW:
In the scene with the camping survivor group, his cop friend makes out with his wife, correct? I'm pretty sure that's happened, but I didn't get a really good look at them in the photograph.

Yessir, that's what happened. I can't tell yet whether their setting up his friend to be an eventual villain or what. He came across as kind of a dick in the camp scene so it's possible. (Of course, his wife has come across as nothing but a fucking bitch, so not sure how much that says).

I will agree with most of you that this pilot worked great on its own. The lack of zombie jump scares and "oh shit" moments worked far better to convey the sense of isolation in this world. As far as people saying there was good character development however, i do not agree with that. There was very minimal development and the character that was the most, Morgan Jones, isn't even a series regular and we may not see him again. Thus making this statement somewhat irrelevant.

I haven't read the comics so I do not know if Morgan and his son are original characters or new additions, but if this does make it to a second season and I was a show runner i'd do my best to try and retain Lennie James who is fantastic in this sort of role.

The second episode appears to be very zombie action-centric with even less character development, before almost doing a 180 the other direction for the third. With only 6 episodes this season may feel very choppy.

I give the first episode an 8/10. I guess I was just thinking too much during it. I felt like most of the show I was like "Why would anyone do that?" and "Do these people live in a world where no one has ever seen a zombie movie??" Maybe I was just being too critical about those points, but I just never would see myself making some of the decisions the characters were making.

Spoiler(ish):

Also, was it just me or did it seem like he had been in that hospital for at least several weeks? I mean based on the rotting bodies and the damage in the streets and stuff, it looked like it had been quite a while since all of it began. Just wondered how he survived with one IV bag for several weeks and woke up with a well-trimmed beard. Guess I started thinking about that scenario back when 28 Days Later came out, and it never set well then either.

End spoiler.

I highly recommend reading the books, there are 12-issue hardcovers that I got at the library. I was totally hooked and read the first 4 in one sitting.

mild spoiler about Morgan:

in the novels, Morgan and son reappear but MUCH later. it would be a few more seasons of the show.

morgan jones and son are original characters (not new to the tv show).. he stays behind in the town and you don't hear from him for a long time. though i hope they change that and write him in sooner.

You guys should read the comics if you want to get far ahead. There should be like 12 volumes out already and they're available from the libraries. I went through them all so fast last summer and can't wait for more.

the second biggest flaw I saw was he was broadcasting that he was driving down I-85 en route to Atlanta but was driving down a two lane country road for much of the trip. And don't tell me he went the business route!

I think he needs to learn to siphon fuel tanks too.

I dunno about all that. A horse is quiet, can go offroad, negotiate obstacles, and run on incredibly abundant fuel. Whereas his cop car is noisy, very restricted in terms of terrain, and runs on a rapidly diminishing supply of gasoline.

Even in ATL he would have been fucked without the horse, which distracted the zombies long enough for him to get under the tank.

A minor flaw that pops out to me as a zombie nut was the road going into Atlanta. It was jam-packed leaving the city but empty going on. You mean to tell me that people stuck in a traffic jam fleeing the living dead wouldn't pull across the median and just go down the wrong side of the road? I'd happily bounce my Corolla over some grass for that opportunity and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

I enjoyed it. I haven't read the comic so I was a blank slate. I'm glad they are finally making a series about something like this. As much as I love zombie movies, it's just hard to really get a feel of how isolated and life-changing something like this can be in just a 90 minute movie.
I was also surprised (pleasantly) by the scene where he kills the half-bodied zombie in the park. Never thought I would feel a tinge of sadness for a zombie

Oh, and a cop with a primary weapon being a revolver? Really? I'm pretty sure even cops out here in BFE Kansas have semi-autos as primary weapons.
And while I'm on the topic of guns, a glock with a manual safety? Come on now...

Well a car doesn't spook, and you can't roll up the windows on a horse. Fuel is an issue though.

Seems to be some kind of concrete barrier dividing the two directions but i guess nothing is preventing people from just getting onto the exit ramp for the other direction do it that way.

^ In the episode there was another scene with cars jam packed on the highway and a big green grass median separating the two sections of highway. Didn't even look like it had a ditch.

Exactly what I thought, Shit every NC town will turn all lanes outbound when an emergency arises like Hurricanes... Raptors... And probably do it for zombies.

Semi-auto 9mm are standard issues, but I don't believe it's a forced carry specially for Sheriff's

The horse didn't spook too much, windows break, and it's hard to crash a horse into something adequately to break it.

Yeah, and there's the aforementioned scene with the grass median to which I was originally referring. More broadly I think any existing military or civil authority would just tell people to use the other lanes. Doesn't that occasionally happen with hurricane evacuations?

All that said, I reiterate that this is a minor complaint. It made for a hell of a cinematic shot anyway.

^x8 funny stuff. didn't realize it, but that's a photoshopped picture of Freedom Parkway, about 2 miles from my apartment. also quite appropriate, as the sheer number of homeless drug addicts begging for money on that road make it feel like a zombie infestation sometimes.

DVR'd episode one last night, looking forward to it...

What is supposed to be the timeline between him entering the hospital and him waking up? There seemed to be some discrepancies with that.

Logically, it could only be about a week. I doubt anyone would be coming in to change his IV.

Other factors make it seem more like 3-4 weeks (didn't the black guy say something to that effect?)

there really is no way to discern a time-frame yet. we can kinda guess based on little things like the flowers in the hospital room, the IV bag, his facial hair, the black guy explaining when the gas was shut off. i figured 4-6 weeks myself which i guess would be long enough for the world to go to hell.

Do hospitals normally have some kind of backup system to maintain water pressure? He drank some from the tap when he woke up.

there was still power in the hospital, most likely emergency generators though. so it's possible the hospital has some kind of pumping system tied into the emergency power for water purposes.

Hospitals usually have everything they need to keep self sufficient for a while in terms of power and water, they usually have some sort of emergency plans in place when utilities are cut off, say in a hurricane. To be able to run for a week would be most likely, but beyond that, I would question if outside aid would be needed.

Quote :
""All this arty-farty (stuff) aside," "The Walking Dead" writer/producer/director Frank Darabont told me back in the summer, "it’s really fun to see zombies in a show."

More than 5 million people agreed with Darabont on Sunday night, making "The Walking Dead" premiere (you can read my review of it here) the biggest hit in AMC history, and one of the bigger hits on cable, period.

The 90-minute premiere averaged 5.3 million viewers at 10 p.m. on Halloween, a number that goes up to 8.1 million if you add in people who watched the 11:30 p.m. and 1 a.m. airings. That puts it ahead of the 4.8 million who watched the premiere of "Boardwalk Empire," which HBO renewed the next day. (AMC hasn't renewed "The Walking Dead" yet, but at this point, it has to be a formality.) And it puts it well ahead of AMC's other original series; the "Mad Men" season finale, in comparison, drew 2.5 million viewers total, which is less than the 3.6 million viewers in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 year-old demographic, and only slightly ahead of the 2.1 million viewers who were in the even more coveted 18-34 demo.

(Also of demographic note: "The Walking Dead" was a rare scripted series to do better with adults 18-49 than 25-54. Zombies are a young man's game.)

"It's a good day to be dead," AMC president Charlie Collier said in a statement. "We are so proud of this series, its depth of storytelling and the remarkable talent attached. As the network dedicated to bringing viewers the best stories on television, we are so pleased to have the opportunity with 'The Walking Dead' to raise the bar within this popular genre and continue our commitment to being the home of premium television on basic cable."

Considering the sheer number of bodies, most likely formerly zombies, that had been re-killed, collected, inspected, bagged, transported and stacked up, the hospital must have been functional for several weeks.

I disagree, it wasn't a "back-story" kind of development, but I felt like after watching it and seeing how the main character reacted to certain situations, I understand his character and what kinds of things were going through his head.

I wouldn't have heard of this show if not for my zombie-obsessed friend telling me about it 2 days ago, but it looks like it could be my new favorite show (i have none right now, not since Battlestar Galactica).

And i was wondering how long the guy was there... i was thinking 1-2 weeks, although he looks like he only had about a weeks worth of facial hair growth.

I don't know (nor do i care) anything about the comics either, so far I like the atmosphere and the fact that it's about the survival situation, not really just blood/guts/zombies.
