so i was running on a greenway in Cary, and i encounter something that looked like this crossing from near the creek towards someone's backyard:

still not sure if it was venomous, but seeing as it was headed towards a backyard of a house that looked like it would have kids, i battled that motherfucker with some rocks. at one instance it sort of coiled up and went into striking mode, at which point i nailed it with a sizeable rock. i definitely injured it, and it went back into the woods towards the little creek.

kind of looks like a copperhead if you found it around Cary. They're usually not agressive, but throwing rocks at them doesn't help matters.

I'm sure the family of that house will thank you for the mice that will have free range without a snake to hunt them

^^ you're an idiot. i did graduate work on copperheads in cary and raleigh on the greenways, there are very large urban populations of these snakes. just because they are around are homes doesn't mean they are a threat. copperheads are very cryptic and non aggressive, you don't usually see them and they aren't going to bother you unless you fuck with them. the vast majority of venomous snake bites are caused by people doing shit like you, fucking with a snake that would otherwise leave you alone.

it was always my understanding that, although copperheads are venomous, copperhead bites are rarely, if ever, fatal

More kids get hurt from getting bitten by domesticated dogs than by snakes...lets go kill all the dogs that are around children!!

fwiw,

last year i was playing golf at the Preserve, and what looked like one of these:

was chillin under the golf cart. it obviously was not venomous, so i scooted away with a club without hurting it and we went out our way.

i dont just flip out and kill any snake i see.

...only the ones with pattern that resemble a copperhead, even if you aren't quite sure of the ID.
