^^^

Yow is all talk. She talks about refusing to accept the status quo yet is keeping all the staff. Fowler was not the only problem. Keeping incompetent people like Asst. AD Annabelle Vaughan Myers and expecting different results, even in a different seat on the bus, is still a buswreck. Sad. Nothing is changed.

^ if you think she can just go in and start firing people left and right then you're delusional. You have to do these things delicately and play the political game. That's why ADs get paid the big bucks. The good ones know how to play the politics and bureaucratic bull shit but still get results.

RALEIGH -- New N.C. State athletic director Debbie Yow plans to send a warning to sports agents.

In writing, Yow intends to explain to agents that if they break any laws while recruiting N.C. State athletes, the university will take legal action against the agents.

A wide-ranging NCAA investigation into possible impermissible contact between college football players and sports agents has generated headlines for weeks. NCAA investigators spent July 12 and 13 interviewing athletes at North Carolina and also have met with players at South Carolina, Alabama and Clemson.
Quantcast

Wednesday, investigators returned to UNC. Yow said NCAA investigators have not inquired about N.C. State athletes, but she wants to put sports agents on notice anyway.

When she was athletic director at Maryland before coming to N.C. State, Yow had university general counsel Susan Bayly send letters to sports agents registered in that state warning that the school would seek damages. Now N.C. State general counsel Eileen Goldgeier is working on a letter to be sent to agents who are registered in North Carolina. Yow said the letter will warn agents that if they violate the law while dealing with N.C. State athletes, the school will sue them.

"I'm going to protect N.C. State University from any agent abuse," Yow said.

North Carolina's Uniform Athlete Agent Act requires agents to register with the state and refrain from promising anything of value to athletes while they're in school.

After reading media reports last month that NCAA investigators had interviewed athletes at UNC regarding contact with agents, North Carolina Secretary of State Elaine Marshall began an investigation of possible improprieties involving sports agents.

Violations of the law are a Class I felony in North Carolina. The law allows a civil fine of up to $25,000, but ACC commissioner John Swofford would like unscrupulous agents to face more substantial penalties.

Yow hopes the potential of a lawsuit that could extract greater damages will be an additional deterrent. The Uniform Athlete Agents Acts in North Carolina and Maryland specifically mention that an educational institution can seek damages, including lawyers' fees, from an agent (or former athlete) who injures the school.

It's difficult, however, to assign a potential dollar amount for those damages in court. It's conceivable that serious NCAA violations could, for example, force a school to give back hundreds of thousands of dollars in NCAA tournament money.

If a school is banned from bowl participation, violations could cost a school more than $1 million. But legal experts say it would be difficult to hold an agent responsible for such large amounts, because such serious penalties usually are levied only when a lack of institutional control on the part of the school accompanies the violations.

"You're going to have this question about whether the harm was caused by the action [of the agent] or by the failure of the institution effectively to control," said Paul Haagen, a Duke professor and co-director of the university's Center for Sports Law and Policy. "There would be a contributory negligence kind of thing there. That would be a difficulty [in court]."

Experts were unable to cite a case in which a school has sued an agent under the Uniform Athlete Agent Act.

University of Vermont law professor Michael McCann said there's a public relations advantage, though, in sending the letter, even if it doesn't have a big legal impact.

"Is it a good idea to send a letter?" said McCann, who specializes in sports law. "In some ways it's a deterrent. It also shows that the school cares.""

gg to Yow for trying to be proactive. She is at least trying to do her job and represent NC State athletics well. We all know all Fowler would have probably just tweeted fat ass Marvin asking him if he could come to the next party.

I'm pretty sure she didn't mean it to be political but that was such a smart move with her making agents on notice public. Makes her look proactive and keeps some of the light shining on UNC and makes them look like they are doing nothing.

not only is her credibility impeccacle, but she's smart.

Quote :
"Dear NC State Alum,

A few weeks ago I eagerly and enthusiastically accepted Chancellor Randy Woodson's offer to become NC State's director of athletics.

The idea of returning to my home state and to this place that has been so special to my family for the last 35 years was appealing to me for a number of reasons. I am particularly excited about Chancellor Woodson's vision for North Carolina's largest university.

Today, I am writing to share with you a number of the goals we will pursue in Wolfpack athletics over the next five years. They are at the core of our enterprise.

Goals:

* Embrace and reflect the ideals of the university.
* Achieve an annual "Top 25" finish in the National Director's Cup competition. This requires an across-the-board heightened level of excellence in our 23 varsity sports.
* Achieve graduation rates for student-athletes that meet or exceed that of the general student body and rank us in the top half of the ACC's eight public universities.
* Achieve team-by-team NCAA Academic Progress Rates (APRs) that place us in the top half of the ACC's eight public universities.
* Ensure fiscal integrity through effective use of resources and enhanced fundraising.
* Achieve federal Title IX compliance.
* Best ensure compliance with NCAA rules and regulations through extended education of staff, coaches, student-athletes and fans.
* Provide competitive venues in all sports that are appropriate for a Division I-A athletics program.

Most recently, we in athletics have begun to consider exactly how we can achieve these goals. This critical process addresses the difference between "talking the talk and walking the walk." All Division I athletic programs aspire to be nationally respected and recognized, but few achieve that distinction. It is our intent to achieve this overarching goal. This is our clear and guiding vision for Wolfpack athletics.

Our focus now is to identify the resources required to achieve these worthy and challenging goals. Those resources include (1) attracting talented student-athletes, (2) providing adequate financial support for teams, (3) attracting and keeping the best coaches and staff, and (4) enhancing our connectivity with alumni and friends of the university.

I am convinced that there is nothing within the university or the athletics program that will prevent us from achieving these goals. The pursuit of excellence will be a process, not an event. There will likely be temporary setbacks along the way. Our ability to successfully navigate such setbacks, while remaining focused on the unrelenting pursuit of our goals, will be a key to our progress.

Across-the-board success in athletics will result in a special kind of "esprit de corps" among alumni and friends of NC State. That positive result alone is reason enough to pursue these challenging goals.

In athletics, we encapsulate these goals with the use of a slogan: "Wolfpack Unlimited - refuse to accept the status quo."

I look forward to meeting many of you at Wolfpack athletic events. Until then, thank you for your devotion to the university, for your support of Wolfpack athletics and for welcoming me so warmly into the family.

Go Pack!

Sincerely,

Debbie A. Yow
Director of Athletics

^ this. I find that photo to be a good combination of professional and edgy.

Also,

+5 credibility for each of the achievements of the fantastic move of putting agents on notice publicly right now:

1. Cashes in on hot topic media headlines to get some positive attention for NC State (us)
2. Back-handedly smacks UNC in the mouth while they are in a very vulnerable position
3. Makes NCSU appear to be a stand up school that cares about it's institution and it's student atheletes
4. Advocates her position as a no shit taking AD who wants the best for the program
5. Puts NCSU on the side of the NCAA and financially protects NCSU against financial harm caused as a result of agents, if (god forbid) we were to find ourselves in this shit storm.

I need to see her fire at least one of our head coaches before I fully support her.

And it should be one of these:
Tom O'Brien: 16-21, 9-15 vs ACC
Sydney Lowe: 20-44 vs ACC (non conference games don't mean a damn thing)

I wouldn't mind seeing a change in softball either...they have barely hit .500 in ACC games over the last 7 seasons

I sent an email to gopack.com for the administration regarding tailgating restrictions and got a response from someone lower, then a follow up from Dr Yow:

Steve,

I need some time to see everything before I can jump in and make a request of campus.

This is a priority to consider. Just give us (me) some time to check it out this season. Hard to make a recommendation for something I have not yet experienced personally.

Go Pack.

I'd take a coach that can cover his sucky coaching with talent (Roy Williams, for example) as long as he can keep doing it every year or two. Then if somebody's available later to take over a top-25ish team, maybe you won't lose much.. or maybe Sid's a good coach

And I don't believe that you know anything substantive about college basketball. We could have hired a new coach, who may or may not have been successful, but that would have doomed us to 3-4 seasons of being terrible before possibly being good again. Now even if Lowe has a bad year and we have to bring someone else in after the season, the roster will be much more workable and set the new coach up for quicker success. Not to mention the fact that there weren't many good coaches on the market during the off season, so we likely would have settled for a mediocre mid-major coach (like Oregon did with Altman) which would have diminished the future of the program even further.

You keep repeating 20-44 like we don't all know what his ACC record is, and unless you've got something a little more insightful I'm not interested in arguing with you further. If we fired Lowe the new coach would be left with a roster of role players with NO incoming recruits and Tracy Smith probably bolting for the NBA. It would take a new coach at least 3 years to put together a competitive team in that situation, while if we hire a new coach AFTER this season he could probably win much quicker since Harrow and Brown will almost undoubtedly be back for their sophomore seasons. Even if you think Lowe is and always will be a terrible coach firing him before this season would have been moronic.

I agree that firing him now would be a mistake, he just shouldn't have been hired in the first place.

But with the new AD in place, she should already have it in her mind exactly what needs to happen in order for him to stay after this season and not let the alumni association persuade her any differently.

The issue with Avent is how we haven't been able to build any kind of consistent success after either of the Super Regional appearances ('03/'08). I don't think we can call him the worst of the 'big 3' coaches though. He has been here a lot longer than TOB or Sid and has had more of an opportunity for success, but he has had some legit postseason experience. I do think this is the make or break year for all 3 of these coaches though, have some real success or you're gone.

Avent's coaching at the Regional this year was questionable at best.

We had as good of 1-5 hitters (Wilson, Poulk, Poulk, Riggins, Ciencin) in the conference with a pretty good 1-2 punch with Jake and Cory and still finished tied for 7th. I'd say his seat is getting warm.

i would be angered if i was sitting here unemployed and twiddling my thumbs on TWW. fact of the matter is that i got a world class engineering education, and got hired before i even graduated, making good money.

when it comes down to it, these rankings should account for more of the "real world", a.k.a what happens AFTER graduation. look at those #'s and you tell me whose institution has an upper hand...a liberal arts place like Carolina that pumps out self proclaimed poets, or a place that pumps out engineers that continually shape the future through innovation.
