I do not eat bagels. They damn near put me in a diabetic coma and make me worthless. Well, more worthless than I am.

I would like to know where to find a good solid bagel in this area. I used to think Brueggers were pretty good until I lived in NYC for a while. Now...blah

Where's a good place?

You should not eat such foods. Through the roof on the glycemic index, sir.

there is actually a place in Greensboro called Best Bagels. The name is definitely misleading.

I hear NYC people say there the best up there because of the tap water

I find that hard to believe, because the tap water up there tastes like piss, and I hardly think piss would make good bagels

but what the hell do I know about making bagels

The NYC tap water is brought in from upstate and it they don't use pumping or a concrete aqueduct so it absorbs the natural minerals from the ground.

Actually, upon further review, the name of the place is Best Bagels in Town. DEFINITELY misleading.

Har har. What NyM410 said is correct. It's a reason why a lot of the food up there (that needs water to be made) tastes so good and unique. Bagels, pizza, etc. Say what you want but NYC is consistently ranked very highly in water quality.

if that was the case for you, you probably got it from an old building with shitty pipes. So complain to the owner of the building.

a lot of people claim that the mineral content of NYC's tap water influences the taste of things

I disagree because NYC has relatively soft water as compared to the rest of the country, however the old pipes here CAN change things so who knows

what is really going on with the New York bagels is that they are made by some straight up Ashkenazi Jews

the water that bagels are boiled in before they are baked can have additives like lye or honey which will change the taste of the bagel

I really like the Pumpernickel bagel sandwich (with smoked salmon, cream cheese, tomato and onion) from Murray's Bagels at 13th and 6th Ave

I'm not disputing that, just saying that when drank by itself, its disgusting

But we've become so jaded by bottled spring water anyway, that I assume nearly all tap water is similarly fecal

bottled water isn't held to the same scrutiny that tap water is - I trust it less than the municipal stuff

also the chemicals leeching from that bottle aren't very appealing

^agreed. I was already weary of bottled water from an eco/trash standpoint...then I watched Flow and won't touch the stuff unless I absolutely have to. And Nestle gets the double thumbs down.

but more on bagels...Panera cinnamon crunch bagel *drooooooooooooool*

Outside of NY, the best bagel is in Greenville, NC @ Boulevard Bagel. All of my NY and Maryland relatives take a dozen or two home and they are the best tasting bagels that one will ever eat. You can even freeze them and defrost them overnight and they taste more fresh than Breugger's.

As a general rule, the place with the best bagel will be the place that's swamped a little before noon on a Saturday.

Also, if there's a temple and a bagel shop nearby that has been open for a couple of years, chances are they make a pretty decent bagel.
