Quote :
" A summer class at UNC-Chapel Hill that lacked any instruction was enrolled exclusively with football players – and it landed on the school calendar just days before the semester started, university records show.
The records show that in the summer of 2011, 19 students enrolled in AFAM 280: Blacks in North Carolina, 18 of them players on the football team, the other a former player. They also show that academic advisers assigned to athletes helped the players enroll in the class, which is the subject of a criminal investigation. The advisers also knew that there would be no instruction. "

So much for the idea that athletes were treated no differently than regular students.

I love how despite the "thorough internal investigation" being released, it took a FoIA request by the N&O to discover that the shammiest of the sham classes were packed with athletes, and steered into those classes by the athletes' academic advisors. It should be obvious to everyone by now that a cover-up is going on, and Thorp and the administration are in full damage-control mode. They released that report as a way to deflect criticism when the truth came out, spinning it all as the work of a "rogue professor" and not an athletic scandal.

So does this reopen the NCAA investigation and cause further punishment?

Does this cause the BOG to finally decide to take notice?

Does the trail lead all the way back to the Dean Dome?

It has been brought up on here before. There is NO WAY that the football players are taking these no show classes and the basketball players aren't invited to the party.

I'm really just happy that the N&O is pressing hard on this. The funny thing is, you are dealing with the Alma Mater of numerous employees at the N&O with this matter. Has to be mixed feelings about bringing down your school.

I'll give it to the Daily Tarheel (and by extension the N&O), they report news. They don't tend to care about protecting their school, they have on multiple occasions gone straight for the truth.

Odd, I've thought the DTH (and by extension the N&O) seems like the only ones concerned with protecting the integrity of UNC. Everyone else seems determined to try and cover up the academic fraud issues.

^^^ Basketball has clearly already been implicated and given the level of this scandal I cannot see any way that the NCAA can simply look the other way. BOG will not take action because the BOG is part of the problem. I want to know if this will finally bring the local pressure to make Bitch release his phone records.

followup to sham summer class article

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2012/06/10/3307752/unc-ch-board-chair-football-class.html

tl;dr UNC board of trustees finds this class "troubling" and Thorp says UNC will take back the $12,000 paid to N'oshow for "teaching" this independent study class

Well we all know that's not true already.

Reading the article, don't these departments ever have audits or accreditation reviews?

Contempt of court becomes a huge issue then (correct me if I am wrong but jail time is a real possibility). What does it matter? I have every belief that there is much more shady shit to be revealed by those records. Why else would everyone be fighting so hard to not release them?

^how does that not prove preferential treatment?

54 irregular and/or fake classes. Most students are athletes, by a good margin. Athletes were steered into these courses...

^Yeah there are a couple courses where there are only 1 or 2 students for the course. Maybe those are "independent study", but that concept is kinda bullshit even without bringing athletics into the mix.

Nothing will come of it. They'll just be allowed to internally sweep it under a rug again and even get help from the top down to do so.

They weren't officially on probation until March of this year I believe, when the NCAA finally made their official ruling

But the fact that this latest bogus summer class with the 100% football player enrollment, changed grades, forged signatures, etc happened in Summer 2011 could be really damning.

The NCAA started investigating their program in Summer of 2010. They're under investigation for a year and they're still cheating? Basically a big "Fuck You, NCAA"

that PDF shows that out of the 681 students enrolled in the shady classes, 398 of them were student athletes...58.4%

if that were representative of the student body as a whole, there would be 10,858 student athletes at UNC

"The Board of Governors placed the academic fraud case on its governance committee’s agenda this week after rival N.C. State fans and officials raised the issue of disparate treatment. They pointed out that 23 years ago, the board launched an investigation into improprieties within the Wolfpack basketball program and the subsequent findings helped lead to the exits of coach Jim Valvano and Chancellor Bruce Poulton."

We would've gotten away with it if it weren't for those pesky NC State fans.

NCSU
* NCAA investigates, no major violations were found
* Shoes, tickets sold
* Students performed very poorly academically

UNC:
* NCAA investigates, 9 (is that right?) major violations found
* To save time, everything else

So people really got bent out of shape in our case because we had a bunch of student athletes with bad grades... and UNC gives a goodly percentage of athletes in revenue sports As for no-show classes and they are allowed to self discipline within the same corrupt system. But at least their grades weren't C averages.

Someone have the details on what exactly the BoG did in our case? UNC's case? Referring to extra penalties imposed above and beyond self imposed punishments and punishments doled out by the NCAA... because on the surface what UNC did feels orders of magnitude worse. Devil's advocate: maybe UNC's punishment was orders of magnitude worse, the difference being we never recovered whereas UNC will likely recover the instant they get their scholarships back, if they experience a dip at all, meaning 5 scholarships yanked from a football team means practically nothing when compared to yanking 5 scholarships from a basketball team.
